Yes, Adam, the Soviet Russians did send a female dog named Laika into orbit as a sort of test cosmonaut. Her survival was never expected, as in 1957, when it happened, the technology to de-orbit had not been developed yet, and sadly died during the flight’s 4th orbit. *😔*

Huh, yea the Soviets put a dog into orbit as part of their space program to figure out how/if mammals could survive the trip as a precursor to manned launches. Laika was a stray in Moscow who was put into orbit, first animal (intentionally) put up there. Honestly the first thing the West beat the Soviets at in space was the Moon Landing, every other achievement was Soviet.
