Here's an interesting fact about Oakland County. It's bigger than neighboring Macomb County, but it has no municipalities with a population greater than 100,000, while Macomb County has three municipalities over 100,000 Edit: Also an interesting fact about Michigan is many rural counties are bucking the trend of population loss, particularly the counties up north where there are outdoor activities abound
@greatpianoteddy314742 минут бұрын
As an Oakland County native, Oakland county is pretty much the backbone of where a lot of people live in the Northern suburbs of Detroit. While Macomb county, is pretty much an employment place for a lot of people.

I thought you'd made a mistake for a second with Westchester County, as in 2020 it had just peaked above 1 million people! But the most recent 2023 estimate shows a population loss at roughly 990,000 folks, you were right.

Grew up in Orange County and have never considered it a suburb of LA. Probably because it takes nearly 2 hours to get to LA and it's actually easier to get to San Diego. It's just a county between the two with no real downtown. And why I still feel the most comfortable in the further out suburbs of whatever city I live closest to.
@BillGreenAZСағат бұрын
I thought the same thing. Usually we think of the suburbs as places where people live and commute into a central city. Not many people in OC commute into LA. It seems like it should be considered it's own metro area. I lived in Huntington Beach and Irvine and actually worked in south LA County but even still, I always considered OC as being separate.
@LawsonBowlingСағат бұрын
very interesting; most Americans (meaning over 50%) are living in suburban settings yet the attention paid to these realities is limited

Builders of the classic “Brownstone” houses in Brooklyn and other parts of New York City were getting the brown stones for the facades from the Palisades but the rich people on the eastern side of the Hudson were afraid that they were going to ruin their view of the Palisades so they had an interstate park created in order to save their view of the Palisades

Surprised Maricopa County is not not the list, yes it includes Phoenix but most of of is suburban.
@milessampson39422 сағат бұрын
Yeah, it was only left out because of that technicality. Maricopa County is huge and sprawling with Phoenix itself not being much denser than its suburbs. Considering the growth in Pinal County to the southeast (Apache Junction, San Tan Valley, Casa Grande, and funnily enough the city of Maricopa), it won't be long before they're on this list.

As someone from Essex County, NJ it's very much a suburban county. Most households from my town and the surrounding towns have at least one member commuting to New York for work and as someone who uses NJ Transit a lot, the trains often double in passenger volume between the three stations in Newark (Broad St, Penn Station, and the airport) and NYC. Even though Newark and surrounding towns developed as a central city in its own right and many people also commute from neighboring towns into it, nothing that close to NYC can escape its gravity.

Yeah, I was really surprised he didn't include Broward. Fort Lauderdale's population is less then 200k so it shouldn't count as a major city.

An interesting thing about Suffolk County, where I am, is that while Riverhead is technically the county seat, the majority of county offices are 30 miles west in Hauppague. And while many of the communities have downtowns none of them are significantly larger or more urban-feeling than the others.

While northern Westchester (especially the NE part) has a lot lower population density than southern Westchester, it is still way close to New York City to be exurban and not suburban. While many are wealthy and don’t want close neighbors & like a rural feel they are still much too close & connected to the city - which does have many exurbs that are much farther away plus the areas above it are suburban too.
@thesharinganknight4 сағат бұрын
Cobb and DeKalb counties aren't at all new suburbs of Atlanta. They're the first counties you think of the metro suburbs (+ Gwinnett) The Braves Stadium is in Cobb County in Vinings (Cumberland) not DeKalb. Also it's only a 1/2 mile to a mile away from the Atlanta city limits right across the Chattahoochee River between the I-75/ I-285 interchange. Also THANK GOD you pronounced DeKalb right.
@willp.81203 сағат бұрын
Younger suburban, or newer suburban counties would be Cherokee, Forsyth, Henry, Paulding, Newton, Coweta, Fayette and the like. Cobb's original suburban development started not long after World War 2, so late 40s, early 50s. Dekalb County had suburban areas going back to the 1920s.

Hard to call Orange County “suburban” anymore. It’s the second densest county in California after the city of San Francisco. Most of the denser counties are cities that are also counties, and the NY boroughs. All that density, and a mountain range/national forest taking up the eastern third. No wonder our traffic is terrible.
