This was brilliant, and so useful. Loved all the variations and ideas. Keep up the good work. A thousand things to do with a poncho tarp, and a 1,001 if you wear it! Great.

Very creative! The only way I will use a poncho for shelter would be in an emergency or fly it over my backpacking tent in order to have the space to use my camp chair and cook a meal with one of my stoves. Getting up and down on the ground is much more of a challenge after what I put my body through with 20 years in the military! When I go down to the ground in order to climb into my backpacking tent, I plan to sleep there for the night and face the challenge of getting back up in the morning or for a pee!😂 Being 63, I have to have a real good reason to throw myself down to the ground and get back up anymore!😅 It’s just not that fun anymore. You have some great configurations to chose from there. Thank you!😊

I like plenty of variety with my camping, and enjoy sharing what I learn along the way. Sleeping under your coat is not everyone`s idea of fun, especially if you have had to do it professionally but a good skill to have for an emergency. Am 63 also and agree, getting back to vertical gets more of a challenge as time goes by. 😁

Some cracking set up ideas. The floor less Gunyah and the Holden set ups are something I'll be trying, just goes to show what can be accomplished with a relatively small tarp. Great video.

I completed the Appalachian trail last year. On my trip the only rain gear I carried was an umbrella I got for $5 at Walmart. From GA to Maine that umbrella kept me dryer than anyone else on the trail except for one downpour in VA. It was so hard that it splashed off the leaves and stone until the air was saturated in Three minutes or less

It`s an under rated piece of gear for sure. Thanks for watching and congratulations on completing that iconic trail. 👏👍

Thank you for this great video. The variation for setting up a poncho are almost endless. Only 1 little correction this is a Dutch army poncho. Speaking as a Dutch men myself.
@mark.a.cornish

Thank you, put a lot of effort into making this one. Did buy it as a Belgian poncho from an army surplus seller, but have come to realize it is the same as the Dutch army use. Do both armies use some of the same kit or was it just miss identified? Love it regardless, very adaptable piece of gear.

@@mark.a.cornish Thanks for your response. Your did make a great video, i really like it a lot of new inspiration and ideas. I think they just mislabeled it. So a little story time The Netherlands starting issuing new kit in 1993 what was basicly a copy of the US sleep systeem including the poncho some small changes where maked but the principle Remained the same. I now that your poncho is dutch because of the camouflage pattern this is Dutch dpm camouflage. Belgian used jigsaw pattern camouflage.

@@jp-un3fy Thanks for clearing that up, have seen the jigsaw pattern on kit, makes sense now. Will get it right in my next video about it.😁👍

This is an excellent resource for tarp setup inspiration -- nice one, Mark! Massive congrats on 1K subs, too. You've earned it! 🍻🙌🎉 I like "Freestanding Mushroom Fly" as a name more than "Alpha Tent", hahaha
@mark.a.cornish
@mark.a.cornish Жыл бұрын
Everyone calls it an Alpha Tent so better not go against convention, might upset people 😁. It`s not very descriptive though and yours makes more sense.👍. I hope this one becomes a resource that people re-visit for ideas, that was the concept really to inspire a few campers to try out something different. 1k, was a bit of a slog but first goal accomplished. Thanks for your support and look forward to congratulating you to 1k before long.👍

0:25 pretty sure thats either a dutch or a british poncho by the looks of the camo pattern. i believe the belgians have a weird kinda orange colour pattern. either way, i swear by poncho tent setups. super lightweight and you keep as dry or often more dry than tents, especially when looking at similar price range tents lol... and i wouldnt want to walk around in a tent folded around me as a rainjacket, another win for the poncho!

@@mark.a.cornish they call this area the Forest of Bowland but there's not many trees about just big hills and moorland. But it's spectacular in all weather especially snow.

Apparently the term forest in this instance means a hunting ground or park for a king or noble - nowt to do wi' trees. I have a new plan for wet days - a CAR - and massive tarp i can attach to the car that gives a lot of space and a space for a stove. but yes, for small camps a tarp in plough to a tree. Have a good un lad.

Use an actual military issue size poncho... the imported copies are generally too small to be an effective shelter. Very good presentation.
