Very much enjoying this series, as I love collecting cards from the 1980s. Would really enjoy special segment focussing exclusively on the Topps Tiffany set. I have a 1988 Topps Traded Tiffany Roberto Alomar RC as a PSA 10 and would love to see where he fits against some of the others. Cheers!

Thanks so much for the idea! I'll have to make a video about Topps Tiffany. For your amazing card only 470 have ever been graded by PSA and 100 have been PSA 10 or about 21% of the cards graded. Tiffany cards were printed on higher quality stock so more of them would be 10s

Fantastic! Thank you for the fresh approach and clear use of the data. As a long time resident of MN, I much agree with your comment about Kirby Puckett being undervalued. This led me to taking a look at 1985 Leaf (Canadian) set that uses the same photos as the '85 Donruss but with a Leaf symbol in the corner. From the PSA data base Kirby Puckett PSA 10 last sold for $3,524 with 25 10s and 1,125 total graded. The looked at Roger Clemens is that set. His last PSA 10 sold for $5,850 with 48 PSA 10s and 2040 of his cards ever graded. Ironically, the percentage of 10s over total cards graded for both Puckett and Clemens comes out to 0.02%, i.e. two unicorns to be added to your list. Thanks, this is a lot of fun!

While I loved Puckett growing up as a player his stats aren’t overwhelming. No major milestones for homers, batting average, hits, etc… and only a career WAR of just over 50. He’s not undervalued.

PSA 10 makes it so hard to create rarity. When you think about it, it’s good for them, but it’s also good for collectors. A 10 has significance, and I like that.

A teacher of mine took advantage of me a dumb kid back in the early eighties and bought a whole stack of baseball cards from me and one was the 84 topps Don Mattingly so when I grew up and got a good job I bought multiple unopened boxes of 84 Topps and I got one unopened box of 84 Donruss. Yeah, I personally love the 1981 Topps cards, but hate the border width. I think that is what generates a majority of the cards rejected from garnering a PSA 10. There doesn’t seem to be any slack for a shift side to side or up and down. IMO

@@sportscardsedge Great thinking for content. I have tried almost all of the cards in the list from my 80's collection and in all cases the best I have come up with was a PSA 9. I had thought while watching that you missed the Valenzuela but it seems like this will be covered later. All of those have severe centering issues on the back. You should list the PSA 9 population to demonstrate that PSA is purposely limiting giving PSA 10 s to create rarity...

I think a ratio of 9s to 10s would be a good analysis, let me look into that!

If somebody really wanted dive in the weeds one could look at sheet placement of the cards with the highest 10 to 9 ratio. I think it's fair to say cards on the edges & corners of the sheet are more likely to have a high ratio or at least that's what psa would say. One could also compare a psa pop to the sgc pop.

Great question. My data source (gem rate) only includes the most commonly graded cards, so these are the rarest of base cards. I owe a whole series on OPC and leaf because they are more rare. Could do Tiffany too but like 20% of them get Gems in part because of better card stock
@bwoods4315 күн бұрын
Using a percentage to determine rarity doesn't make much sense in this context. The "rarest" card would have a population of 1. More people have HOF cards/rookies graded, so that's why the percentage of PSA 10s of those cards are lower.
@sportscardsedge15 күн бұрын
Are 1/1s rare or scarce? I had a tough time with it too. If there are a lot of cards but only a few make it to PSA 10 then I think a 10 is rare and for some of these super rare cards but I do get your point. I’d love to know a better way to describe it
@bwoods4315 күн бұрын
@@sportscardsedge by definition, a 1/1 card is rare. That doesn't make it valuable though. If there's a card that has 1 PSA 10 copy, and another that has 10 PSA 10 copies, the one with only one is rarer. It doesn't matter how many copies have been graded, so percentages aren't involved. What people generally say about it, however, is that it's more difficult to get a PSA 10 for certain cards (like Rickey in particular). That can be illustrated with percentages.

I clicked on the video because I was like “rare” cards from 80s, there aren’t any! None of these cards are rare, THE grade of a PSA 10 is rare. Maybe it’s semantics but it’s a little click baitish, just saying. Did enjoy the statistics of the Gem rate though.

Just one person's opinion but it is mathematically a fact. PSA has a habit of grading a player not the card to keep pop counts down. Example is the Jeter Upper Deck SP. That card is stupid hard to get a 10 BUT all other players percentages are much higher. PLUS grading is a human element as you can have 2 identical cards in condition and one may get a 10 and one may not. It's a coin flip which isn't fair but it's how it is.

Omg Am I the only person who understands "grading". IT IS ALL ABOUT THE PRICE YOU PAY TO GRADE THE CARD!!!! If you cheap out and think you are going to pay $15 per card to get a Gem Mint 10 that is worth more then the $150 "insurance/declared value" your delusional!!! Also PSA HAS TO HAVE YOUR EMAIL AND # so they can contact you to up charge you which you have to be a member to get!!
@sportscardsedge16 күн бұрын
Using that as the basis - do you think for example the people submitting the Rickey Henderson cards were just that much less likely to claim a higher insurance value to pay the premium grading fee?
@jeremygriffin20516 күн бұрын
@sportscardsedge a 10 will cost you $4375 to get. A 9 costs $349. 8 costs $49. 7 and below will cost you $25 (or $15 special) for 1980 topps Ricky Henderson!!
@jeremygriffin20515 күн бұрын
@@sportscardsedge I don't see my reply so will do it again... To get a 1980 topps Ricky Henderson will cost you as follows. $4375 to get a 10, $349 to get a 9, $49 to get an 8, and $25 (minimal) to get a 7 or below. The price you pay to get the card graded is based upon the value of the card after grading. That is what they mean by "declared value" now changed to "insurance". Also if you give them the $4375 to get a 10 up front cause it is identical to the 10 you already have. They will take your money and give you a 9....
