When I survived Katrina for the three months power was out and martial law was under effect bartering was very common. I think "luxury" foods like chips, junk food, liquor and anything fresh (fish, deer, etc.) was the most valuable items to trade. Everyone was open carrying at that time too. I was a boy so I don't remember much, but I remember my daddy teaching us all to shoot in the backyard so that he and my mother could go on MRE pickup runs and I remember the look on my mothers face as my dad looked at my oldest brother (15) and had to tell him that if someone came to take our food or water or any of the livestock... to shoot them. It was a defining moment in that chapter of my life. Looking back at it, I was very sheltered from what was going on but looting was rampant and people were- literally- shooting/stabbing each other in line at the gas station, so as extreme as that sounds it was necessary. Maybe it's PTSD, maybe it's practicality, but now I'm prepping based on my past experiences due to the incoming corona virus panic. Nothing unites or divides mankind more than disaster. I seen community come together like never before during that time, but you also witnessed the worst in society come out.

What I commented on is "you will be a lot less concerned about expiration dates when you get truly hungry", and that canned food is good for a heckuva long time past the arbitrary "expiration date". MRE's pretty much suck as survival food (designed to be constipating, it's battleground fare) and have a ton of sodium. As the OP posted, freeze-dried foods are far superior, although they can get pricey.

I am poor, I buy my food once a month and buy an extra bag of beans or rice, etc- - these go in those $1 gallon canisters from Dollar Tree. In the past I also saved $20 a month to put in my well (solar power pump). I have a wood burning cook stove (a gift), and my oil lamps. It has taken more than 10 years, but I am good for at least 3 years. So I sit here "self-quarantined" and try not to laugh and the toilet paper people.

Corollary to contractor bags. Buy rolls of the 13 gallon bags with drawstrings. When the water quits, you can empty your toilet bowl of water, drop a bag inside then use that for a week or so. When full, synch up the drawstrings and dispose in appropriate place. Keep things clean and sanitary.

Dryer lint from your clothes dryer filter, especially from cotton fabrics stored in ziplock bags for fire starter. Something that everyone throws away everyday is more valuable than one would realize. And it's free. Depending on where you live, deer moss dries quickly and can be an excellent fire starter/tinder as well.

Take the lint from your dryer filter, ball them up, and roll them around in petroleum jelly. They make excellent tinder that will start a fire in most reasonable conditions. Also, in addition to ferro rods and Bic lighters, have a few butane windproof torch lighters. Those, plus some decent tinder, will practically allow you to start a fire in a storm. Fire is one of the real essentials, especially if you are in a cold area.

I live in Venezuela. I live in the situation that you guys prep for. For me, water is the most vital item. I stock up on water. When there's no electricity, such as happens here, there's no running water because the city pumps need electricity to work. We had one major blackout that lasted a month. I have a 15,000 Lt water tank, a 28,000 Lt pool, and I stock 20 water cooler bottles with mineral water. Using our water consciously, we had enough for the whole month., while many other people had to pay expensive water trucks or get water from streams.

As you say, water is your very first priority. I would say 15 liters per person per day is the very minimum you need to drink, cook and keep yourself, your clothes, your dishes and your house clean. What is your opinion?

@@retepeyahaled2961 ...15 liters, in my opinion, is too much. Humans can go with less than that daily. Anyway, in my experience here, it's not just per person, it's also per gender times age. In general, women use more water than men, and young moms use more than mature women. During the most recent extended blackout here when the country had no water for about two months (many areas still have no water), we used as little as we could of our water. I bathed every two days with a wet rag and one shampooing and rinse, while my wife and daughter bathed daily (a short shower to save water) but they still used too much to wash their long hair. Our moms, who have short hair, didn't use so much. My old mom also rag bathed every other day to save water. I drank about a liter of water daily, same as my mom, and my wife and daughter about two each. For cooking and washing dishes, my wife used about 5 liters a day. Since we didn't know how long we would be without water coming into the house, we used it wisely. With my 15000 liters, I calculated we had enough for a long haul. When the water started coming in, it was brown, totally unpotable. Good thing I have a sand filter system between the pressure tank and the house, so the water from the underground tank went in all brown into the pressure tank, but then it went through the filter system before going to the house. Imagine not having water for nearly 2 months and then getting it all contaminated. And we were lucky. Many parts of the country only get water twice a month. Today, in my house, we get running water on Thursdays and Fridays. I know a contractor that works for people high up in the socialist government, and he tells me they all have 40,000 and 60,000 liter tanks in their mansions. That's socialism for ya.

If someone is laughing about you for being a prepper, tell them greetings from Eva from good old Germany. My grandparents got through WW2 because of their survival skills and full stocked cellar. Knowing how to conserve home made food, smoking meat, ... But the most important thing was having a lot of soap, cigarettes and alcohol (whiskey, rum,...) to trade. At least for those living in cities. They had to hide their stuff because the Nazi government took everything in the last war years. My grandpa even shot someone because a guy wanted to steal food from his platoon in Norway. Because of these experiences he was a prepper until his death. His cellar was full of home canned food, home made bacon, wine, medication, fuel,...

I can relate to your story. My grandparents came from the Ukraine in the 1920's after The War of Independence. They had mass quantities of stored food, made homemade booze and primitive weapons. When I was young I used call them hoarders but my father said No there not hoarders their survivors.

My wife thought I was crazy for stocking up a few packages of gallon freezer bags. It always helps when trying to keep things dry while outside. Sandwich baggies work a lot of the time, but it depends on the size of your cell phone or whatever you're trying to keep dry. I have a radio that is able to be charged by hand, batteries, or sunlight. It won't fit in a sandwich baggie, so the gallon size do come in handy.

Concerning fishing line: the cheap stuff has a definite shelf life, it goes bad by solar radiation and age alone. Now, braid line costs something like 3X the price of monofilament, but its shelf life is much longer. Also, braid line is much stronger than monofilament, when you compare the same diameters. Remember that fishing line, especially braid line, can also be used in lots of non-fishing applications.

Just a suggestion on fuels in survival situations, use them only when you have to. Learn to rely more on manual ways to start a fire over using a lighter, use solar panels for power over propane or what not. IMO fuels will become a huge commodity in the future of whats coming!

I vacuum seal dry pasta noodles and spaghetti sauce in mason jars. Also I slowly bought rechargeable batteries over time. You can also check with your local airport and see where they send the lighters they take from people. Our airport sends to a city auction. I bought a gallon sized zip lock bag full of lighters for $1. A wood stove is something I feel everyone should have. They sell wood stove kits on Amazon where you can turn a 55 gal metal drum into one of you can't afford a real wood stove, that's what I did. Also hand tools are good to have like the old school hand crank drills that don't require batteries. Just remember, it's not a race. You don't have to spend a lot of money at once. Start slow if you need too. Pick up an extra box of noodles everytime you go to the store. Buy a little each Time you're able to, it will eventually add up. Set small goals, have enough supplies to last you a month, then try for 2 months, then 3, etc... and start with the basics like food and a way to purify water. Then worry about the other stuff like tools and ropes etc.

A few years ago, I read an article from someone who had been in Sarajevo during the war there and he had a few other items on his list you might want to consider. He explained that while people prep for their body, they don't prep for their mind and soul. Simply put, you need to ensure you have things set aside to help keep your spirits up. Some items to stock up on: Books - (novels, history, science) to help your mind escape the depression of your circumstances . Games - Cards, board games, etc. Musical instruments- if you are so inclined Shampoo and soap - People can forget basic hygiene Detergent - Dish and Clothes for obvious reasons Pet food - For obvious reasons Light bulbs - if you expect to have power Handheld "walkie talkies" - battery operated as the cell network may be/ will most likely be down as well. Household cleaning items - you need to keep your living area clean.

In my hurricane kit, I had a backpack for each child of "diversion/entertainment" items - age appropriate. Cards, games, spiral notebooks and pens/crayons, colored pencils. We also had a small white dry erase board and dry erase markers to play hangman and pictionary as a family.

Rule of 3 is the biggest thing to think about. You can go 3 minutes without Oxygen, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food. Food was way too high on that list. I start my list with Items that help me breath such as masks, with filters. Our current situation is evidence of this. Next i would point out that we need at least 3 ways to not only get water but also 3 ways to filter water. Each is worth it's own video. Food is so far down the list, I'd probably talk more about sheltering in and bugging out next. What that means is depending on your situation you should have plans for both. This is where you deal with security and shelter. You can make a whole series of videos about this subject. If where you live is not safe and secure, know that you have to get to some place you feel secure. That is where the bug out process works. However, bugging out requires forward thinking, you need to know, where you are going, how you will get there, how long it will take, what you will do when you arrive, and what to do if you can't get there. Being prepared is a state of mind and coming up with plans for the "what if's" for those plans. Our current situation is nothing more than inconvenience, this is not a SHTF situation, but it could turn to one. I highly doubt it will, more than likely we will go back to normal what ever that means. Hopefully people have learned that we can't rely on our government to save use, we need to rely on ourselves.

You have a lot of good points. However, I really don't foresee us ever getting back to pre-Biden days anytime soon. Not getting political, but, we have all those cargo ships stuck out in the water, thousands of illegal immigrants pouring through our non-existent southern border, people being fired from their jobs at record pace,etc. So, being prepared is key. A lot of people haven't figured out what is really going on. I live in an area where we deal with hurricanes, but, prepping for disperse camping type situations, I am not familiar with and am trying ti do as much prep as I can on a very limited budget. Pretty much everyone I know, with a few exceptions, thinks I am overreacting. But, they also thought I was overreacting when I would prep for 2 weeks+ of no power or water in hurricane situation...that is until Hurricane Erin and Opal hit. We had no power or water for 3 weeks.

Masks are definitely not on my list at all. They won't stop a virus, or smoke, or dust. I never wore one and never will. Water is #1 on my list. If you have a good, continuous supply of water, you can keep flushing the toilet by dumping a bucket of water in it. Otherwise, you can build a potty chair, put a bucket under it, and add some cat litter or sand after each #2 usage. Men can just go outside for #1. The whole world is a bathroom. :)

Our local one even had pallets piled high with canning jars and supplies. I had to stock up then, as Walmart didn't have jars or lids for many months before that. I'm in eastern NC, and I'm glad I've never been without power for more than 3 or 4 days, and that was way back in 1960. Now, I live near the substation that feeds the local hospital, so my road gets electricity back on first. Yay! I am old, so this old house is my last stand. It's been here for almost 100 years with zero storm damage. And where the house stands has never been flooded once in that time, although the very back part of the yard next to the swamp had fish swimming in it after one hurricane. :)

I think that you should stockpile things like the Diva Cup, for women. This is helpful if you run out of other feminine products. The cup can be washed and rinsed and reused. Additionally, there is a device called Go Girl, so women can actually urinate standing up. As for toothpaste, that is great, but in a pinch, baking soda works just as well. Great list though!!!

Baking soda lacks flouride. Get prescription toothpaste, it's very high flouride and lasts a very long time. You could use it less frequent in between baking soda cleaning to keep your enamel strong.

I feel you folks should also stockpile Hydrogen Peroxide, Super glue, quick clot, and bandages. Carry a small squeeze bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide in you back pack and Bug Out vehices. If you get a wound wash it out immediately to prevent infections for skin cuts, next use the glue on the edges of the outer skin to hold it back together after it stops bleeding. Butterfly stitches work well for holding the ski together on flexing skin parts while the super glue does most of the work. Do not use it internally. Wounds will heal in a matter of a day or two. Quick clot for more serious wounds to control major bleeding wounds, and bandages to protect those wounds. Your first aid kit should also have some medical surgical tools in it. Maybe you can't remove a bullet or suture a major wound,, but you might find someone who can patch you up if they have the tool to use. The stories I could tell you about how I learned about what I described could fill a book. If for nothing else I can keep an audience entertained around a campfire for many nights. Prepare for the worst and pray for the best. ps: Buy the super glue in alots of small squeeze tube servings, because superglue has a shelf life measured in hours once opened. Great list BTY!

@@misfitvillainz1769 Correct. I explained it all in the 1st paragraph. On skin cuts, wash with hydrogen peroxide to remove as much contamination as possible. I flush the wound until the cut strops fizzing from the hydrogen peroxide, then press the edges of the top skin back together, lay a small bead of super glue to those edges. Wait for the glue to dry an repeat as needed. Very little scarring. I once busted my top lip through to my teeth with a jack handle and glued the outer skin together as described. A few butterfly bandages and it healed in a few days witout a scar. stitches would have been a nightmare on my face the rest of my life.

Long time prepper here and I would HIGHLY advise everyone to watch videos & research people that have gone through extended grid down situations. Few things stood out to me... 1.) bartering items are HUGE!!!! Alchohal, diapers, extra water filter, etc. can be traded for HUGE gains. Stock items you don't need like diapers, dog food, etc. 2.) (the biggest eye opener) Entertainment items! One quote I heard was, "a lot of people prep for the body but not the mind". Books, puzzles, movies, board games, coloring books, crossword puzzles, etc. I watched interview after interview of people talking about loosing their minds over boredom. You don't want to just sit around all day eating beans right?!!?!

Some good points! I never mentioned owning land and a community for me is several like minded families. I live in Alaska and we have our bug out location. Two of our main preps are salt and meds. You have to know how to properly and safely preserve fish and game, salt is essential for that and health in general. Get a map of BLM lands in your area and spend a fair bit of time going to different locations and find one that suits your needs.

Great vid. One suggestion: solar garden lights. We live in a rural area in the mountains and lose electricity fairly often. I have about 15 "stick in the ground" garden SOLAR lights. We actually have them above ground in DIY holders around our deck railing. When the power is out, we just bring in a few to light what we need, then take the out in the sun the next morning (once had 8 days with no power!). Just a thought - they are cheap and work really well.

One of the biggest risks we run into is not only a failure of the power grid, but complete destruction of the grid through a future war. Look up what an EMP attack can do and how very likely it has become. Without electricity this total society will collapse. This makes me wary of anything that works on electricity or even on batteries. I do have some solar lights et cetera, but I can totally do without; candles, lighters, scales without batteries, a watch and a clock without batteries, paper maps, hardcopies of the most important books, iron sights on my guns, an airhorn ready to replace the electric doorbell, a handpump to pump up water, a handpropelled drill, whistles instead of walkie talkies...

During the expedition of Lewis and Clark when the food was running low they ate the dogs and horses. In many instances dogs will eat much more than they are worth. Keeping dog food for a couple months is obviously the way to go but when that runs out your dogo goes into the spaghettios.

Just to add to the "prepping for your dogs" notion, the airtight "vaults" w/ Gamma screw-down lids are great. I use the 60# size, and can easily store a years food for my Wirehaired Pointer in 4 of them. That's 5#/food a week.

Foot health pack. Absolutely essential. A simple foot injury can kill. Mole strips; blister plasters; pedicure kit; corn pads; medical tape; dactarin powder; pressure tights and spare socks: in a dry bag or tin. It's there when you need it. Also, sewing kit, buttons, etc. And cash, in small denomination notes (or large coins, dependent on where you live).

It always makes me happy when I see preppers with Thrive Life food. I actually work at Thrive Life, and having tried almost all the food here, I can attest that it is really good stuff and well worth the price tag!
