These are really great demonstrations. Amazing how sweet the sound is even dry. I suppose string quartets and small ensembles are meant to just sound of the room as thats where they originated. Also side note - I notice the masks cut down on the breathing sounds in quieter acoustic instruments.

Wish I could actually see how the mics were placed

HA! Me too! You CAN see them but not well. It was a last minute camera setup with a lens that just made everything a little too tight. Anyhow! Down below you can see the gold Nordic NU-100K in the middle of the ensemble between viola and violin. The AEA R88 stereo ribbon is up above it and can barely be seen at the top of the frame. Then on the left hand side toward Philip Glenn (violin) you can see one of the Gefell UMT large diaphragm mics. The other is on the opposite side of the quartet. Hope that helps!

Excellent Illustration! I agree. There is a wealth of very specific information online to tell you how someone recorded something, but very little around why it was recorded that way, what other options were tried, and how different setups impact the final sound. This was great! Just curious - Did you add a hardware Lexicon 224 XL to your stable of reverbs, or were you using a plugin version?

Thank you! Yes! Exactly what I was hoping for. And the Lexicon 224 XL is a hardware unit we added to the studio last summer. It’s incredible.
