This channel is amazing for the comments section alone. No weird outrage, no shaming the creator for what songs he hasn’t heard, just supportively helping him understand the references and context for the track and kindly recommending other music that might be of interest. SO REFRESHING. Imagine if the whole Internet was like this. A+++ vibe, keep up the great work and THANK YOU for reminding there are still amazing people out there.

Quick notes…the Patty Duke was a dance based on the dance done by the actual woman Patty Duke on her TV show from back in the day (similar to how the Dougie was based on Doug E. Fresh’s dance style). Also…if you didn’t pick up on it already, the reason why this one wasn’t in the same lyrical class as some of the other Beastie jawns is because they were pretty much freestyling.

yes he patty duke is a dance you've seen it a million times and probably never realized it had a name lol.. almost all choreographed hip hop routines feature it. It comes from a 70's show called the aptty duke show which is kinda crazy in and of itself. Because you wouldn't associate that show with hip on on any level lol (think hanna montanta in the 70's or boot leg leave it to beaver).

I didn't start deep-diving into the James Brown catalogue until about '94 and I couldn't believe how many rap songs sampled his stuff. The part in this song where it says "Uh...I ain't got no dust!" is a sample that they tweaked from a live version of "Escape-ism" off of his Revolution of the Mind album, which coincidentally, Public Enemy used that album cover as inspiration for their classic "It Takes a Nation of Millions" album. And like someone else commented, check out the Paul's Boutique LP. The Dust Brothers are some crate digging mofos. There must be 1000 samples on that album. It was released just before the copyright laws changed

If you like beatboxing you might enjoy some musical history like the Mills Brothers who were a brother singing group that started in the1930s and went to the 1980s. They were poor as kids and would make sounds of trumpets, trombones and bass guitars with their mouths between the harmonizing. Beatboxing is similar in the way that if you didn’t have the money to buy a drum machine you used your mouth instead. As the saying goes “Necessity is the mother of invention.”
