Ice-T basically started gangsta rap. His 1987 song 6 in the Morning is what influenced Eazy E to create NWA, and Ice Cube has said Ice-T was one of his biggest influences. Yet Ice-T himself gives credit to a rapper from Philadelphia, Schoolly D who had a song called PSK, which influenced him to write gangster rhymes.

He was in the Navy got out. He went to the streets, then turned to rap. He actually didn’t know anything about rapping until he got the deal. The record company ask him to perform in order to get the deal, but he told them that “If I let you hear me now, it would be like trying a hand grande out before you buy form an arms dealer or testing slug before you buy a bullet”. So they signed him then he learned how to rap.

Ice T is much older than most rappers we know. By the time colors came out Ice T was like 30 years meaning his gang affiliations were during the late 70s or early 80s so we probably wont hear much about it. He was affiliated with the Crips though. He's been into hip hop since the early to mid 80s, it kind of outweighs the gang affiliation imo.
