R&B (RAP n Bullshit ) they were using HIPHOP for record sales. Not the same as original R&B.
@mikehammer17774 сағат бұрын
It wasn't that rappers were dissing R&B or had beef with R&B, back then, most rap was hardcore, funk, rugged, and lyrical..... cats like Wil Smith, Kwame, and Hammer (but Hammer were nice, but the whole zoot-suit and dancing wasn't considered rap by MCs) etc. were more tv TV-friendly, watered down, and even cartoonish, and were not considered MCs. They were considered sellouts. React to the song "Crossover" by EPMD, it is specifically about that subject. Be sure to have the lyrics on screen.

Yep! More people need to realize that rappers back in the day always paid homage to those who came before them. Those legends took it as an honor and not “stealing lyrics”. We all used to know instantly where it came from because we loved lyrics. Things changed sometime after people stopped caring about lyrics.

Jimmy Hoffa was a 1960's & 1979's Card Carrying Union president for the Teamsters in New York & Staten Island. He was a well known public figure for his tough negotiation skills and his ties to the New York Mob. He disappeared one day without a trace and to this day has never been found, and no one has knows who is responsible for his disappearance. When investigators came around asking the locals who was responsible for his dissappearance, the locals said Jimmy was now "Sleeping with the fishes". Through the years everyone speculated that the New York Mob put a set of cement shoes on him and threw him in the river.

Bro, back in the day, Hip Hop artists being purist to the art were seen as more authentic, vs Hip Hop artists that compromised the art to chase album sales by going pop and R&B. This is why the underground Hip Hop scene was so revered back in the day. Growing up in NYC I remember seeing numerous Hip Hop artists who grew their rep in local underground clubs, and selling their music on street corners. Many of those artists, years later blew up and became household names nationwide. There was a sense of realness to those artists that grew their rep organically at the grassroots level, compared to the ones that were purely 'studio-created' and who couldn't perform live in front of a discerning crowd.

Big shout to Councilman DoItAll Du! Lil bro didn't notice Redman in the video. We grew up on South 20th Street in Newark, NJ and Lords were our neighbors from around the corner on 19th Street. I learned to DJ and gained my knowledge of music at a young age from Redman. I grew up in the greatest place & era that I could have been in because Red was teaching me to DJ when I was kid, before he even became a known emcee.. and once he did, I had so much talent around my area that kept me grounded in my decision to stick with music: Redman, Lords Of The Underground, Naughty By Nature, Apache, Queen Latifah, Lakim Shabazz, Chino XL, The Fugees, Diesel Don & The Govna, Outsidaz, Rah Digga, Big Markie & Cool V and more were all from my area.. and even Canibus lived in Newark at one point.

This was a very short period in which Hip-Hop was blending into R&B & New Jack & a good faction of underground rappers were against it because it was turning rap into pop music. This was the beginning of what was sort of a fork in the road for Hip-Hop. See A Tribe Called Quest's 'Electric Relaxation" for the sentiment. The time was sensitive & slowly splitting people apart. Then Diddy pushed the button with Bad Boy & everything went to shit.
