So I applied for a job and I asked for 260k TC. When I got the job offer, it was 259k TC, but it contained a non-compete for 18 months if I were to leave. I also misjudged the cost of living for my new city, average rent is 2000 per month but when I started looking for apartments I was making too much money for most places and the cheapest I could find for my pay was 3000 per month. I will be explaining myself and asking for more, but I would like to know how much is too much. I want to ask for 310k TC. 20K for the miscalculated cost of living and 30k for future opportunity costs since I will not be able to job hop to increase my pay as freely as I could before. Is this too much? How should I go about starting this conversation?

I don't know enough about your situation, so take everything with a grain of salt. It sounds like you signed a job offer and took a job, later discovering that you could have asked for more and that you asked for less than you needed for your lifestyle. We haven't found cost of living to be an effective argument in most situations. Value to the company and market pricing (other opportunities) is what works best. If you already signed the offer, your chances of re-opening the negotiation without another opportunity or big change in the situation will be lower. You will really need to plan this thoroughly and feel out your manager. You have very little negotiating leverage after you sign the offer - The big issue is that all of this was knowledge you could have checked before you signed. If I were making this case to my boss, I would have to make it live with LOTS of sincerity and getting them to understand how excited I am. 1. I would see if there is a market rate / leveling argument to be made. Hard since you signed and they gave you your asking price. 2. Build up their confidence in my ability to do the role. But then when they are super bought in, start telling them the new info you discovered. I am not just doing this for money but so that "I can just focus on hitting the ground running and crush this role without not have to worry about making ends meet". Though, honestly, this is very low probability and the boss will have to be super sympathetic to do this. It seems like you just didn't do your diligence which is not a great professional sign. If you are early in your career, this is higher probability.

Please I got an offer and accepted the offer but I couldn’t start the onboarding because of my visa situation. The company said that they would disposition the role but my offer is valid for 6 months, please can you confirm what that would mean?

Non competes are illegal in most states

Most are becoming not enforceable yes. There are exceptions for very specialized cases especially for executives or specialized talent. But many prominent states do still have non competes that are enforceable.
