I’m too young to have made it to an original Skynyrd show but 3 things I saw Ronnie Van Zant do that I thought was unique. 1) Ronnie would watch the guitarist’s play their solos. 2) On the Grey Whistle Test I saw Ronnie take his mic and raise the bottom side way up over his head in an almost upside down position while he was singing. 3) Lastly, he would grab a handful of Allen, Gary, or Steve’s shirt and push them out in front to feature them on a solo. I can think of several other little things that he would do but these 3 things would stand out

I saw Skynyrd summer of 77 at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. Dickey Betts Great Southern opened up followed by J. Geils Band then Skynyrd then Frampton. (We left after Freebird) There were over 100,000 people there. During the show Artimus engaged with some rowdy fans in the front by making a peace sign with his drumsticks while sitting off of the front of the stage. This was the legendary show in which RVZ & Gene Odom got into the infamous confrontation with Dickey Betts at the stadium Hilton bar across the street from the venue. I believe this is the first time they played both Whats Your Name and That Smell live although im not 100% sure I'd have to ask Kimmy😮

I always thought Gary did great on the song “Wino” making the police siren sound. It sounds like he is creating feedback by standing close to an amp and controlling the sound by tilting the guitar up and down real close to the amp. Craig was that indeed how he did that and made that siren sound ?

I saw .38 special in Jacksonville at peak .38 with my girlfriend at the time .. rocked the house.hard. Jeff caralisi was wearing a Ferrari mechanic jumpsuit. You know Ronnie Montrose had a guitar riff of a motor revving on the classic Montrose song Bad Motor Scooter. Speaking of that I saw Montrose open for Lynyrd Skynyrd in the Summer of 1975 with a young Sammy Hagar on vocals. What was unique about that show was it was on the 4th of July in Birmingham, Alabama at an outdoor stadium. We got there early that day and were out at the ticket office hanging around waiting on them to open and start selling tickets, we could hear Skynyrd doing their sound check in the distance and the first song they played was Saturday Night Special, the crowd around us roared when they first heard it. The other thing that blew our minds is later on when Skynyrd played and the show was about over and while they were playing the guitar solo on Freebird a big professional firework display started going off overhead, man Allen Collins was up there ripping on the guitar solo to Freebird with big cannons exploding overhead, the crowd was going crazy. I don't remember the fireworks being advertised and it caught everyone by surprise, I don't know if the City of Birmingham put it on or what but it blew everyone's minds. I still have the concert stub to that show.

Talking about someone throwing a joint up onstage and Ronnie tossing back behind him and Craig scooping it up - I was at a particular concert once back in the 70s (I forget the artist) and after the show the house lights came on and we were down on the floor of the civic center and you couldn't walk for tripping over tons of empty booze bottles and there were thousand of half burned joints that people had dropped scattered everywhere all over the floor. You could see younger teens running around and scooping up all those joints and filling up bags of them to take with them.

Of all the guitars Griff, I wish we could have had a real clear look at that beautiful Brazilian Rosewood on the back and sides of the D28. I think u said it was a 67’ or 68’. That’s a nice guitar pal, I’d definitely invest in a proper professional neck reset & set up. I have a 66’ Martin 000-28 w/ Brazilian . I have many guitars, a cool one is a 1967 Gibson J45, signed JLH & John L Hooker, otherwise known as Johnny Lee Hooker. It was from Steven Seagal the actors, collection. I bought it from Norms Rare Guitars in LA. I spent 20 yrs building a collection. Started playing at 15,52 now. My son who is 18 now picked one of mine up at 15. In 3 months time he was better than me by several lifetimes!!!! Best part of that gift is he likes ALL THE MUSIC I DO!!!! Hey Craig, maybe some of those men at rescues and emergency situations are women. Never know nowadays. Funny story. I drive a truck and was delivering explosives in a mineshaft. As I was exiting the mine and going to scales to weigh my empty truck I looked to my right and seen a bearded something with tits. I stopped the truck and looked again but the whateverthefuckitwas had already disappeared around the corner. So as I pulled up to the scales my Mine Escort (company policy needed to enter mineshaft) came up to my truck and before I could ask he said yes that was a man with tits. He knew exactly what I was thinking. I was like holy fuck! Escort said the bearded titty fella had just received his boobies the previous week and was very proud of them. Lol.
