250k vs 500k Pots, Does Pot Value Make a difference? Plus, Porter Richochet Pickups!

I've always heard that 250k Pots give you a darker tone and 500k Pots give you a brighter tone but never tried it for myself. Today I get to see for myself and check out some righteous pickups while I am at it. Special thanks to my friend Joe for letting me use his guitar for this video.

There is a noticeable difference in tone, and those pickups with the 250k potentiometers do sound better. Those pickups do sound good; they have a unique tonal characteristic to them. Now, I'm interested in also listening to sound sound samples of humbuckers with 1M pots. Anyway, good video.

That would definitely be interesting. But it would basically sound the same but brighter.

Do volume pots too make a difference like tone pots?

Great question, and yes! The pots make a difference no matter if it's on your volume or tone pot because your pickups are hooked up to them. In general, the larger the value Pot, the more treble the pot lets through. Single coil pickups are already bright, so they don't need extra treble, so we usually use 250k pots. Humbucker pickups tend to be darker, so we want extra treble so we use 500k pots. For some reason on Jaguars and Mustangs, even though they are single coil pickups they use 1 Meg pots, which contributes to them being so bright and jangly sounding. These are the "generally held" guidelines, but you can always experiment for yourself like I did in this video. If it sounds good to you, it is good.
