71+ year old retired Kansas farmer and sometimes hunter/shooter here. Thanks for the educational and entertaining video. I would be happy to own rifles chambered in any of these three cartridges but only the 257 and the 270 really interest me. Not because of their ballistic characteristics but because of what I call home town boy makes good geographic pride. I live just a few miles from where Roy Weatherby grew up here in central Kansas. I have know several of his contemporaries. One gentleman from our church often regaled me with stories of their adventures growing up together before WWII. Sadly all those folks are gone now taking those history lessons with them. As to my selection of cartridges I like the 270 just because it was Roy’s first successful creation. I like the 257 because I have seen what it can do in the hands of a competent rifle shooter. I saw a friend of mine drop a medium sized Whitetail buck at a little over 400 yards across a pasture using the 87 grain load. It was grave yard dead right there. I only own one rifle chambered in a “magnum” cartridge, a 300 H&H (although the Hornady 35 Whelen 200 grain SuperFormance load at 2910 fps is in the neighborhood), the 257 and 270 would be my first Weatherby rifles and probably the only other magnums I will ever own, especially at my age and limited physical abilities. Couple of other things: I haven’t looked at any sources, but how does the 270 Weatherby compare to the 6.8 Western and how does the 7mm Weatherby compare to the 7PRC? That seems to be the recent hot debate. Also, don’t know of you intended, but you made it sound like all three cartridges were based on the 375 H&H case. Only the 7mm is based on the 375. The 257 and the 270 are both based on the 300 H&H. Thanks again for the video.😊

Have a .257 and it’s a mean laser beam, but based on the 270 wby numbers it’s gotta be one of the most underrated cartridges out there

I just ran some ballistics on the load presented. You could run a 300 yard zero and stay less than 3” above or below line of sight out to 350 yards! Definitely a laser beam!

Awesome video! I was just commenting they other day on another channel how I would like to see more videos on the 270 and the 7mm weatherby cartridges! I wanna do another rifle build just can’t decide. I would like to stay with the 270 caliber bullets. I think. I also like the 25’s. Someday a 7. To many choices! But really want another magnum. A 270 weatherby with a fast twist to shoot the 165 accubond long range or the heavier sierra bullets would be awesome !

Haha, nice cameo of Tim there! I wish Weatherby would update the twists on these just like they did with the 240. The 270 is the one I like the best for the same reasons you do. Surprised you picked it over the 257 but see why you did.

7mm Wby Mag the most versatile one IMO. Would be interesting to see how it goes with 175 grain bullets with the regular twist. Though I guess that the additional muzzle velocity compensates BC of heavier bullets and would just work fine.

RW, very nice comparison. I think I would agree with you in the 7mm being the most versatile. Personally I don't need the the versatility. For elk I'm going 300, so my 257 is more of a dedicated prairie goat gun. What I've always wondered about is why Roy named his 7mm a 7mm. At the time it was introduced WW II was still a fresh wound. With the disdain for the Axis powers and their damn metric calibers, I would have thought Roy would have named his 7mm the 280 Weatherby Magnum. Maybe sales would've been better. I also find it interesting that the 7mm, until recently, was the only metric in the Weatherby line up. Roy's thoughts on that are probably lost to history. Keep up the good work. Cheers, Jeff.

Managed to get a Mark V weathermark 270 WM, before they were discontinued. Ammo is difficult to obtain. Ended up with 3 boxes of 150 Nosler partion. On sale @ $60/each. Not the most accurate, but with a new barrel, managed to keep 1.5" @100. Tuned a 140 SST load @3240. One inch @ 200 yards. Connected with a groundhog at 320 yards. 😮 SST bullet still expanded at that range on a 15 pound groundhog.

I agree with you on the 270 WBY. It's been the King of 270-cal until the birth of the 27-Nosler. In my opinion, the 270 WBY is a fanomanal cartridge with great long-range ballistic and plenty of horse power. Especially with the heavies on the market from 160 to 180gr, bullets the 270 WBY really shines. Hell, the 270-WBY is only about 150fps slower than the 27-Nosler . My second cartridge choice in your line-up would be the 257-WBY. Loaded with the 145gr black holes bullets running them at 3070fps, the 257-WBY is a force to be reckend with . Talk about long-range ballistics WOW. I like the 7mmWBY, but they should have used the exact same cartridge as the 300-WBY. That would have made it the King of 7mm until the 7-RUM hit the market. The 7-WBY really isn't that much better than the 7-Rem-mag, in my opinion. Some good news I heard from a big weatherby vendor that they were working on a 7-378-WBY . I thought they were going to release it at shot show this year . I found out that they were still running test . Now that's going to dominate the 7mm world like the 30-378-WBY did. I am looking forward to seeing it hit the market. Also, keep your eyes open for Horndys new 25-CM . It should be hitting the market very soon . It's been a long time since anyone has made a new 25-cal saami spec cartridge. I can't believe that when Nosler brought out their new line-up of cartridges, they didn't release a 25-Nosler . Anyway, great video, my friend. Thank you for everything you bring to the hunting, shooting community. God bless you and your family.God bless America 🇺🇸 🇨🇱🇺🇲 🇨🇱 🇺🇲🇨🇱🇺🇲🇨🇱.

Thanks for highlighting the weatherby cartridges. I own two weatherby rifles but they are not chambered in weatherby rounds. Have an old vanguard given to me in 7mm rem mag and a youth hunter model for my son in 7mm08. I wish more of the weatherby cartridges would be produced by other manufacturers to make the more available and affordable. All three of those look great. I would also probably pick the 270 weatherby of the three. If you do not hunt elk or moose that 257 weatherby looks really good. Watch you on u tube . Thanks for your shows

It seems like you cut the LRX bullets short on their minimum velocity for expansion. Could you talk more about that sometime? Maybe do some range days with them to show what you mean? Barnes says they get full (1.5 diameter) expansion down to like 1600fps or something and there seems to be plenty of KZbinrs confirming this, but not you. *I should add- no personal experience with them yet but I plan on building a rifle specifically around a Barnes LRX so I'd like to know if I'm barking up the wrong tree.*

@EternalClimb

@@ReloadingWeatherby have you done any testing on this? I'm really wanting to build a rifle around the LRX Bore Rider. I'm curious if I need to do an extra fast twist (1-7 vs 1-8) in order to get reliable expansion at lower velocities. Or do I just need to make sure I've got a 26" barrel to get 3k fps mv.
@ReloadingWeatherby

Something to consider It’s often stated that the 25 caliber isn’t as versatile Well, is the 257 Roy capable of yotes to elk or not? That’s not versatile? There are more bullets available than a person can test before shooting out the barrel That’s not versatile enough? We’ve become too picky If I’d end up owning a 257 Roy, I most likely wouldn’t get out enough to shoot to enjoy its FULL POTENTIAL A high full potential indicates versatility, so it seems

They’re all good. 257 is more common, flatter shooting, and smoking. On paper 7mm wby is the best, it can get into 300 win mag territory, you just have to stack the ammo when you can find it. The 270 suffers from the same comparison to 7mm rem mag but worse, because 7mm rem mag is very similar.

Roy was WAY ahead of his time. If these cases were not belted, the PRC craze would be null and void. I get the advantage of being able to seat those long bullets in the PRC design, but the Wby cases can handle the heavy for caliber bullets for all but the most extreme weights. I have multiple outcomes with belted cases (300 Wby, 7RM, 300 WM, 338 WM, 264 WM, 308 Norma Mag) that were easily sub MOA and in many cases well under MOA. If Weatherby had released affordable rifles in the 270 Wby and 7mm Wby they would have been mainstream probably as solid as the 300 Wby.
