Spot on. An 1818 Bust Quarter has the same survival rate as an 1893-S Morgan, and yet has one-tenth the price. What a steal! Then there’s the 1824/2 bust quarter. Estimated survival of 100 to 125 examples. And yet you can acquire one for less than $1,000 if you peruse eBay long enough. I personally love the capped bust halves. I bought an 1812 in AU50 for $650. Modern currency cannot compare

I feel like every response to a question like this should start with the disclaimer that 99.999% of coins have underperformed mainstream investments over time. The ones that have outperformed are the true rarities, especially 18th and 19th century gold. So if past performance is any indication of future results, I’d go with an old gold coin with multiple levels of demand, like an 1838-D or 1838-C half eagle, with original surfaces. The originality premium of old gold has grown steadily (thanks in part to CAC) and I expect this to continue.

@gregm85222 жыл бұрын
While I agree with you, one big caveat: old gold is very pricey and values have already matured. Currently the upside appreciation curve is flatter than is the downside depreciation curve. Rarities in $5 Libs are still way undervalued and should be considered. Multiple levels of demand is an excellent yardstick for success.

OPTION 1: Draped Bust Half Dollar Date Set, to include 1801, 1802, 1803, 1805/4, 1805, 1806, 1807, in choice VF, but dropping down a few grade ticks if needed on the key dates. Once you have accomplished this, it will totally cure you of your coin investor mindset! OPTION 2: Low Mintage Proof Indians Cents with toning that appeals to you. Get mostly different dates until your 25K runs out. If you are not hooked on collecting by then, immediately sell all your coins and buy mutual funds! OPTION 3: 1793 Large Cent Type Set, to include the 1793 Chain Reverse, 1793 Wreath Reverse, and 1793 Liberty Cap. Get the best graded copies you can afford for the 25K total. Don't be afraid of a little corrosion if the eye appeal and detail are solid. This will cause your investment strategy to fail because you'll never want to sell your 1793 Large Cent Type Set! That's okay. Put them in your Will. They will probably do very well for your Heirs.

I think 19th Proof type coins can be found at a bargain still however the biggest upside may be in the world coins. I prefer larger medieval coins thalers, Daalders, Crowns, Reales ect. This market has risen just like the others have but I think it still has a lot of room to climb still. The designs can be incredible and the history that often ties into our own is fascinating. Many of them have very low survival rates and it’s pretty common to pick up Top Pop examples without breaking the bank

I agree with Ben, but I believe one caveat comes to mind - people will always pay for quality - given the 25K cap, possibly a high grade type collection - this offers collectability in the short term and liquidity in the long term. that is my short answer as the price of precious metals would not affect the collectability but will always be in demand.
@cheapskatecoins57092 жыл бұрын
A few things I would recommend that both make for a great collection and will only increase in value over a lifetime would be 1 - anything with a CC mint mark especially silver dollars, 2 - $3 gold coins, and 3 - old commemorative halfs and dollars. Now for me if I had 25k to spend just on my collection I would be targeting bucket list coins which for my collection would be mostly ancients, a 2014 Gold Kennedy half dollar and I've always wanted a high grade Liberty "V" nickel collection and 3 cent collection both silver and nickel. Definitely agree with Ben, be a collector not just an investor. being a collector gives you the knowledge you need to pick up the right pieces at good prices and not get screwed over on price.

I've made a lot of swings and misses, but the one area where I've had consistent success is 1936-1952 proof sets - or more specifically, proof half dollars. That's kind of in line with the scarcity argument you make for a '14-D or '09-S VDB. None of these coins are ever going to become LESS rare.

Too many people would go for one high-value coin. The problem with that is that you can only sell such a coin as a single unit. Now if you have two hundred and fifty $100 coins, you can sell a few or a lot at a time, you can give one to a young collector, and you can invest in different series of coins. So if some series don't do well over time, then some others will. And of course, quality $100 coins will always be liquid. Dealers know they are easy to sell.

As much as it pains me to say it, I would stick with graded (PCGS or NGC) high grade coins. There’s less risk and they will be much easier to re-sell in the future. I would primarily stick with desirable-date Morgan dollars, because they have always been collectible and will always be collectible. A nice set of CC Morgans will have a market long into the future. You may not hit a home run… think base hit or a double… but you won’t be throwing away your investment either. If I had $25k burning a hole on my pocket, I’d personally like to collect the best examples of 19th Century half dollars, including a draped bust, capped bust, seated, and Barber in high grades. But I say that as a collector, not an investor.

This topic is too broad but you gave him a good, solid perspective. Love love the coins you mentioned. 25 k can go along way. If he wants to maximize his dollar he could (with honest guidance) buy raw coins that have a super potential upside and send em in for grading. It may be riskier but he won't pay as much. He must also do his research, make a list, and if he does go for any quality high grade coins they must be slabbed by the big 2! Thanks Ben! Love these topics.
@mjanovec2 жыл бұрын
He’d have to be pretty knowledgeable to buy raw coins that could grade well. In which case, he probably wouldn’t need Ben’s advice. If a couple high-dollar coins grade as cleaned, his investment could be suddenly be a lot less valuable. If he buys coins that are already graded by a reputable third party service, he may pay more up front… but he’s guaranteed a much easier sale down the road, with no worries about how they’ll grade.

Modern commemoratives are the unsung heroes of coin collecting. I love them, they are relatively rare compared to many popular numismatics, they have the same silver content as a Morgan Dollar and few of them sell for much more than generic rounds. If demand ever goes up even a little, they have lots of upward potential; and a few of them already have gone up into the hundreds of dollars. I'm really enjoying the hunt for them.

Buy as a collector, not an investor. The odds of hitting the home run are slim-to-none. Besides there are much better investments with the markets down. Numismatics are still enjoying their pandemic resurgence. And PMs, although way down, are still higher than they were pre-pandemic. And... have premiums that make them a no-go for investors. How are you going to get your money back? If you have all the money you need, and still want to play... do what Ben said.

Most of these commenters prefer rare high premium coins. During normal times, they may appreciate more. These times are not normal. Precious metals are a hedge against fiat currency inflation or collapse. In a barter scenario, the date on the coin wont matter to the average person. Give me low premiums- I like the common date pre 33 $5 and $10 US gold.
