i just wrote my first novel where she plays an important part in the protagonist's life. Mama he's making eyes at me was the first song i ever learned the lyrics too. I drove my parents crazy singing it around the house. at the time, lena was 10 and i was 12.

When I first saw her on opportunity knocks being the same age as her, I was blown away with the power of her voice at ten years old. Having seen the TV program about her recently my heart literally broke, I had tear streaming down my face with the want to hug her and save her from all the people that had exploited her through her short life.😢 And like others have said, you could see all of her emotions in the song and then coming out of the trance she was in. Love you Lena an angel gone to soon. RIP❤

Just watched Remembering Lena Zavaroni the documentary, and am now here listening to this beautiful rendition of Going Nowhere. Lena, touched so many lives with her talent and beauty ~ I grew up seeing her on Opportunity Knocks and followed her success over the years. Her decline in health due to Anorexia was talked about continually during interviews, which would not be the case, today. Little was known about the condition, back then. It was almost seen as self inflicted being caused by vanity. How wrong they were! Karen Carpenter was treated in the same as well. It is a tragedy that Lena and Karen died so young not reaching their full potential especially, in their private lives. RIP to two amazing, courageous and beautiful women. Your voices will live on bringing joy forever more.🌹🕊❤

Lena was born in 1963 like me. We were born in a decade which was just full of astonishing energy and creativity. I remember seeing her when I was a child on Opportunity Knocks and she was that same child. We have lost other children of 1963 since, like Whitney and George Michael but her death seems much sadder to me. Lena unknowingly or perhaps knowingly sang her own obituary here. It is a stunning performance. Just imagine what she could have achieved without her demons.

August 27 2023 On holiday in Belek, Turkey and retuning to Lena's beautiful face, eyes and rendition of this amazing Neil Sedaka composition. This song's lyrics are so poignant and so relevant- at all times. The melody is fabulous. Neil's and Lena's performances are different but each are unbelievably fantastic. I love them both equally for different occasions and reasons. Lena's not acting here, she is living every word - painfully. Why didn't someone close, hear her and give her the help she was crying out for?

Phenominal, just meggace-fantastic, I am so profoundly sad that she is no longer with us, when by all rights she should be alive and well, and making milions with her true and inimitable style of singing which this video is the greatest testimony. I remember seeing this on TV all those years ago. I think that Lena's own TV shows were the time when most people first realised just what a phenomenal talent she had. Up until then she tended to be thought of mainly as a child star. Then suddenly there was this incredible mature voice. I remember watching this performance and just being in awe of the voice coming out of this tiny young woman, still a teenager. The whole reason that Lena was so successful at such an early age was because it was pure natural talent. It was already there from the beginning. She was the best natural talent that we've seen. I can't think of any other solo performer at any time, anywhere who was so good, so young. Fantastic lady she was.

Can I just dispel a few things that you may have read in the papers just after she had died. I lived in Hoddesdon at the time, we used to see Lena quite often, while shopping in the Tower centre, ( its a big Morrisons now) she had a flat above it, they are very nice flats. we even spoke to her a couple of times. Hoddesdon was not a Run down area, she did Not look like " A bag Lady " in fact she always looked quite smartly dressed, and clean, We or anyone else never ever saw her "Rummaging around in Bins" she was quietly spoken and very polite and she was NOT arrested for shoplifting in Sainsburys.

She was a shy very quiet young lady just as she was when she made her very first tv appearance on opportunity knocks. She became a different person with a microphone in her hand because that voice came from nowhere, she would blow the roof off, nothing like how she spoke at all , Lena was a sad lonely young lady in her own little world, but lost herself on her music , which i believe kept her going for as long as she did love her , wonderful young lady whos career sadly cost her life in the end xxxx

Am I to believe, Lena, was still a teenager when she made this performance!! How on earth does a woman so young deliver a song with such passion and feeling as Lena does here, it is truly a sad loss to the world of entertainment. It is often said that "true" performers are very tender and fragile people, that is why they can deliver such heart breaking. breathtakingly beautiful performances as Lena delivered here. Lena felt every single word she sang and at an incredibly young age. If Lena had still been around I doubt very much she would have continued in her career, her depths of feeling for the songs she sung, would have burnt out this young woman at an early age. No one can feel this level of emotion every time they go to work and be expected to carry on for many years, unscathed emotionally and, sadly, that is what happened, we lost Lena at a very young age. Hope you can read this Lena where ever you may be and I hope you have the peace you needed so much. God bless!

Wendy Adams That's not strictly true when you look at people that sings the Blues. Or artist that have experienced oppression. They sing very much from the heart equally like Lena here if not more. I'm not taking away that she delivered brilliant performances because she certainly did. But lets not say that true performers are tender and fragile people because we've all seen people that have come from awful backgrounds or have experienced the worst treatment ever and from a very young age yet survive well into adulthood whilst their performance level grows. However, this is about Lena and she brilliant and that's all one needs to say.
@wazz1154
@wazz1154 9 жыл бұрын
11kwright A person can be tender and fragile but live well in to adulthood I agree BUT, they have to have one thing, something that Lena didn't, support from the people around her. Someone to help Lena to stay well grounded, someone who wanted Lena for Lena and not for Lena the money maker. Emotion in a performance as Lena performed has to be so heightened to be able to deliver the level of emotion in her performance. And there is one thing we know about Lena, lena was in turmoil and emotional conflict as she was battling anorexia.
@11kwright
@11kwright 9 жыл бұрын
Wendy Adams Everything you've said is absolutely true and I'm not in any shape of form disputing it. All I'm saying that there have been many artist like Lena emotionally in turmoil for whatever reason and if or had they not have found the strength from somewhere they too would have sunk. To be more to the point artist that have experienced slavery, the persecution of jews, general daily abuse from family members - there have been people that have gone on to be true artist. People that have extended from those people in a time where they existed in so called civilised society yet civility was not shown to them - they had to still climb and some didn't make it because it was too oppressive - holding back, living with a brick wall in front of you daily - unable to make any form of progress in life. Yet we see those that do even though they've been abused when they were young by those that are suppose to love and protect them the most. When they reach adulthood there is no one to turn to in their world because professional society is out of their league in every way. You see people with no education at all go on to be professor, brilliant artist etc etc. So this is where I was just merely pointing out to you that Lena is not the only person that sings with this depth of emotion. The black community we see it all the time from generations to generation from the suffering they've endured. Writers and so forth and I could go on and on. I'm just saying because you made it appear that Lena was an exception when she's really quite the norm. People that sing, write, researchers, from the heart usually have experienced some from of harshness in their lives which tails into their profession because it's from the heart. That said Lena was and truly was one great performer and surely missed.

I saw this video on KZbin 5 yrs ago and loved it. Lena was 18 yrs old here and gave a beautiful performance. But she was crying out for help when she did this song and it's a shame nobody couldn't save her from herself and her demons. This mental illness took away two angels from us : Karen at 32 in 1983 and Lena at 35 in 1999. Both gone too soon.

Wonderful. What a talent. Adelle? Pfft...Lena Zavaroni was literally singing for herself and about her self right there. A phenomenal talent taken before her time. People sadly die because others turn a blind eye, or say 'okay, good' when someone clearly in pain says 'I'm doing fine'...She died because others failed her. RIP.

Another time I come back to this video and, how everytime I see it, I realize that it is beyond of a magnificent performance, because Lena is really “living” the song, not performing it. I can’t see this video with my family, I can’t see this video with my friends, I only can see this video when I’m alone, because it takes me to tears everytime I see it. I agree with another comment that the most poignant moment of this video are the final seconds, when Lena "wakes up" to the real world, showing a lot of fragility, with a slight tremor and a flicker, and then you realize that she have been in a sort of trance, elsewhere, but even more, you realize that you too have trembled and blinked and, like her and with her, you just have landed to the real world after spending a few minutes in a world of emotion, beyond the time, to which she took you by the hand, wrapped in her voice, trapped by the infinite tenderness of her eyes. There is something that transcends music and artistic interpretation in this video, there is something deeply human and even divine in it, something that has made me admiring, respecting and loving this woman forever. May God bless her soul

I had the pleasure of interviewing Lena at the Playhouse Theatre up in Edinburgh in 1980. She was a lost wee soul. i just wanted to wrap my arms around her and give her some reassurance. So bloody sad that someone who performed with Sinatra never got the love she deserved...

I would normally dismiss all this "feely" stuff as claptrap but for once, I have to swallow my prejudice and totally agree with tunolta above. When she, and one, comes out of that "trance", it is magical. I always knew she was a loss but this brings home the extent of that loss. So, so sad.

@@paulwild3676 I don't know if I have ever seen another performance in which the singer was so clearly 'in the zone', completely lost in it. At the end you can see her snap out of it and become what she was, an 18 year old girl. She's already looking thin there, if she hadn't fallen victim to anorexia she could have been an all time great.

Such power, such intensity, such emotion. Lena put her heart and soul into her singing. And she's so beautiful too. Her Italian roots shine through. Surely one of the most accomplished singers of all time. I don't think there's a singer today who could approach this standard of perfection

Truly truly wonderful and a breathtaking performance from someone so young ...she was amazing.When i played and sang at the intercontinental hotel in Hyde Park Corner in the Soufle Bar she often came in with her husband and family to listen to me and relax and have a drink in the late 1980's. I didnt realize she was so ill at the time as she was so nice and i admired her so ...just an amazing gift and talent ..but when i watch her sing this song you just see that she truly was a great great artist who left us far too early ...i miss her and the thought of what she could have become ...the UK's Judy Garland ? ...different from Miss Bassey but just as good in her own way , I cried and cried when i heard she had passed by then i had gone back to the States..RIP Lena xx

This performance is truly mesmerizing....and totally heartfelt. I have watched it over and over again of late_ and the sadness I feel for this poor young woman as she "lives" every torturous line I also feel is being conveyed to me by my late son, who took his own life a year ago today.... I believe he wanted me to hear this song as this is how he must have felt at the time of his passing. Hoping they may both have found the peace and tranquility now_ that they couldn't find in their own lives here. I'm sure they have....❤️
