It’s honestly refreshing to see a new voice in the BookTok space, especially someone who wasn’t a reader before and is just getting into it. It offers a really unique, unrepresented voice and perspective. Hearing someone who wasn’t a reader say “this book made me want to read more” is more persuasive to me than someone who read 300 saying a book is good. Liking a book when you generally like books means less, tbh. I read a ton and my reviews are definitely not worth much because I rate damn near everything 4 stars and above 😂 Not to mention, I think it’s massively beneficial to the community as a whole when we have people who only read 26 books who are still willing to share their thoughts on them. There’s been this huge push towards people reading as many books as humanly possible in a year just to say they read X books, but a lot of them are skimmers as a result (or they log children’s books and magazines, which is just pathetic) and it becomes incredibly obvious when they can hardly provide a damn summary of the book a week later or they have complaints about a books plot that are plainly explained in the book if you actually pay attention. It’s also just real. Not everyone has the time to read constantly or is even interested in doing so. I read 130 books last year, my partner read like 12. We both benefitted the same from having read and having enjoyed those books and his opinions on what he read are every bit as valuable. I’d love to see more creators who make a yearly book review video like those whose niche isn’t books. Just an otherwise regular person who read some books.

It's really cool to see how many guys got back into reading in 2024. I was very similar to you where last year was the first year I picked up books for pleasure since middle school. I read 22 books in 2024 and have quite a bit of overlap with your list! One book I loved not on your list is Beartown. Backman's tone is so different than Anxious People but the story and characters are incredible and moving.

@pey_wey22 сағат бұрын
@@philgotfits While part of a series, Beartown can absolutely be read as a standalone and still be an impactful story with a satisfying ending. Having read the first two books, I would say Beartown is masterful of both plot and characters, whereas the followup is heavy character focused. Us Against You picks up with the characters and introduces a new direction. So the story arc is expanded with the sequels, but Beartown definitely stands on its own with its story and conclusion.

I’m glad to find out Red God is coming out this year, which I didn’t know till this video. Regarding The Martian, that is a sci-fi classic imo. I read it over 10 years ago when I was in Middle school for a book report and I still think about it so I disagree completely with ur placement lol. I do find PHM to be better but I wouldn’t have picked it up if I didn’t recognize Andy Weir’s name from The Martian. Couple of books I have read recently that really changed how I view social interactions is "Surrounded by Idiots" and "The Status Game: On Human Life and How to Play It". The former being the breakdown of 4 different types of personalities that most, if not all, people have and the latter being how seeking status is a game we all play and how it impacts our life. Worth checking out if you are into that of genre. Appreciate the video!

Super impressed when people can stick with it for a full year and get through that many. I read Dune, Messiah, and Children (waiting to pick up God Emperor) and I was recommended reading the first three for the story of Paul and the Atreides family. Messiah is a big change of pace and was kind of slow for me to get into due to it having a large focus on the aftermath of the first and the consequences of Pauls choices but overall still a great read. Children of Dune was just as fun of a read but definitely flys offf the rails in the last quarter or so.

I can’t wait for that! I loved the movie The Martian. Almost as good as the book.

We have similar taste - highly recommend dungeon crawler carl. Excellent entertainment value, characters and worldbuilding that will make you laugh. Audiobook narrator also crushes it.

About spit out my coffee in laughter when listening to "Daisy Jones and the Six" and that the book is fictional and "the interviews are fictional interviews"

I agree with everything in your S tear except Red Rising 😭 I really wish I liked it more, I'd even bought the whole series 🙃 but I found the main character SO annoying in the first book and couldn't keep going, maybe this gets better in the other books? Also, I'd HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the Broken Earth trilogy. I read it in 2024 and it became an all-time favorite. Hard-hitting and the magic system is unlike anything I've read before

Fifth Season is on my TBR! my tbr is so huge idk when i’ll read it but i’m looking forward to the day i start it. and yes Red Rising certainly gets better and Darrow matures a bit as it goes on, but it just might not be your cup of tea and that’s okay too

Piranesi is spectacular! I was so in love with the story that I immediately picked up another of Susanna's books, but unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed. I might get back to it later in life, but her book 'Johnathan Strange and Mr Norrell' did not grip me like Piranesi.

You and I are on almost the same trajectory of what we have read and we don’t know each other. I started reading again in 2023 and started with Red Rising. Same rankings on them all as you. S on all but Iron Gold being a B. Then read Will of the Many, also S. Read Dark Matter and Recursion. Would rank them both an A personally. Enjoyed a bit more than you. Gave a shot to Old Man’s War by Scalzi and didn’t enjoy his writing. Didn’t even finish it. Tried Empire of Silence but just could not do it seeing as how dense it was. Started reading Project Hail Mary…was enjoying it but his very PG rated “swearing” was throwing me off and set it down to try something else. Started Mistborn, wasn’t fully gripped, and am about 60% through Upgrade by Blake Crouch. So far it’s about a B or B- compared to my A ranking of DM and Recursion. Thanks for being a new voice in this space. Will follow you as you seem to have identical taste as me and are reading faster than me ;)
