Final flight by Tom Nallen's beautiful 26" rubber-powered Dorand AR.1 biplane from 1917. Model was built in 2010, flew many seasons, but found the trees bordering the Wallkill River in Wawayanda, NY on 5.18.19. Attempts to retrieve proved too dangerous over the deep water. R.I.P.

I just knew they were still around -- a kite -eating-tree! Those varmints!!! Except this is a "hungry" kite eating tree and will eat anything! I am sorry for your loss of a beautiful piece of art. Looks a bit like a walnut scale Dehavilland DH4 that I built in junior high. Except for the lower wing was affixed to the fuselage. And the forward cockpit was covered in postal configuration. And the biggest thing is it didn't fly near as well as your aircraft.

You needed me to be there to go after it. If a tree is thick enough to support my 150 lb frame, that plane comes down. 3 solid weeks building a scratch-build RC that ended up at the top of the biggest tree in the school yard where we test flew. Home to get ladder to get me high enough to grab lowest branches. went up with multiple tent poles over my shoulder and duct tape. Once branches were too small to climb slowly pulled poles out one by one, taped together and extended until I could poke him down. Came down with holes in my pants, bloody left hand from tree bark and a plane waiting for me at the bottom. Took pics of the whole ordeal. Looking back yes it was probably pretty stupid but that plane came down. Wife almost killed me for almost killing myself. But just to say if a piece of art that beautiful is in a tree that is rooted in the same ground I'm standing on its coming down. That thing is just too nice to leave there!!!

Water didn't look too deep. I think, at a younger age, the desire to retrieve "at all costs" would have made me attempt a rescue. Alas, as we get older, either wisdom or a lack of athletic ability gives us a more relaxed perspective to such things. When I saw the model, I immediately thought of the SE-5A .. looks somewhat similar. Pretty sure I built 1 or more SE-5As way back in the day. It was a grand flight. Too bad there wasn't a 3 minute DT on it. Thanks for sharing the flight. Cheers.

Better to lose it that way than it be stepped on or otherwise harmed by someone not paying attention to their surroundings. I have experienced that, it sucked. Beautiful resting place for equally beautiful art!

I was there to see it fly away - the three finalists in the WW1 mass launch contest event saw all three of their models get sucked into a massive boomer thermal - watchers thought all three were goners! The two others were eventually retrieved...

So sad, last Sunday wind changed direction suddenly and I've also lost my best Hangar Rat in a 50ft treetop with brand new FAI super tan rubber, tried to get it down with fishing line for hours, I even managed to touch it with the line but no luck to get it down. I also bring always 20ft of tent rods to the field. Time for a new building.

you need to take a fishing rod,some 80lb braid and a few lead weights ,do a cast over and shake over the river though that may not have been wise :(

The growing/prevailing 'logic' nowadays is to have at least ONE guy/member/companion or friend no more than a phone call away... Who OWNS and is fairly skilled with a quad copter/drone...and even FPV--and ask that they try to retrieve it with an attached hook. Hope you can follow up with this possibility for future 'thieving arboreal Ents'!
