This is the gear that we finished our 2023 PCT thu-hike with. What a year to hike it! The snow was deep, the weather was wild but we still had a wicked time. We wanted to make a video about the gear we were taking but knew that things would change a lot over the course of the trail, and so in this video we run through all of the stuff that worked for us and what we might change if we were going to hike the Pacific Crest Trail in 2024.
We have a TON of footage from trail that we will organise and put together into a summary of our experience so that 2024 hikers and other future thru-hikers know what they are getting themselves into!
PS: A few things we forgot to mention - we both had base layers. For a good portion of the trail these were in a bounce box and not carried. We had an inReach mini. And yes we did brush and floss on trail!

Nice gear list. I got me an MSR pocketrocket recently. I like it a lot. Was hesitant to pay the money for it but it was been very worth the cost so far. Great video.

Nice gear video guys. I started this year on the pct April 8’th, because of the relentless snowy weather in March I ended up buying and carrying a lot more gear / weight than I needed to, and ended up getting shin splints in San Jacinto. The goal was to section hike about 700+ miles but sadly felt well short of that. I’m also Australian, so it was super anticlimactic to come home without seeing so much more of the trail and having to leave a lot of cool people I’d met on trail. So yeah, you had some very UL gear in your setup and that’s what I should have done initially. I also didn’t really do a shakedown hike. Since I’ve come home I’ve sold most of my gear and bought up so much new gear and have gotten my base weight down to 3-4kg’s. Headed back next year to try and do as much as I can!

P.S dumpster fire is a killer trail name lol. What’s the story behind that?
@dazedadventure
@dazedadventure 8 ай бұрын
Bummer to hear but the snow took out a lot of people, especially early on. Like we said, we did spend a lot of time trying to get it right. But we did cut down a lot of stuff in the first 500 miles. Next year you will smash it! The story of dumpster fire is all of my gear was black and shiny so when I had it all on (and my flame gaiters) I looked like a trash back on fire!

this was so informative. Just normal people, unsponsored giving real trail experience. there would be very few people with this type of experience. How about the gear that is all hype and simply does not work and had to be abandoned?

My pocket rocket work well under 8,000 feet however above that the striker won’t work. One of the screws started to back out around the 600 mile mark and I got a ride from a trail angel to the Napa and reinstalled it with some thread lock. Then this year as I was putting it away the insides came out and now the striker doesn’t work at all (always carry a back up fire starter) however it still works and the back up is already ordered lol. Nice video and congratulations! I got injured at the swinging bridge and had to get off trail.

OH NO! Like we said, we have had no issues with the pocket rocket deluxe so far.

thanks for the video. what brand are these more robust bags you stored and sorted your food in? That net bag with trailmix looks like a net for laundry, right?

I think the ones you are talking about are reusable produce bags that we bought back home, but the ziplock bags are called Quinline on Amazon.

Appreciate the video, just got to through the big 3 but I guess I’m a little confused… you both say the burrow economy was so warm you never slept in thermals but then the man in the video says he needed to swap his pad for an xtherm because he was too cold?
@dazedadventure
@dazedadventure 7 ай бұрын
To have a good sleep system you need to have a warm pad and warm quilt. One is useless without the other - which was my problem. I wasn't insulated from the ground
