I used to go thru the AZ/Mexico border of Nogales, so I kinda imagined Santa Theresa as around there. Pretty dastardly place, in and of itself. I never went more than 25 miles into it. I'm sure it's changed but it was pretty much a shite hole in the '90s. I liked this section for it's general strangeness and for its inside-journalism aspects. Isn't Bolaño a great _great_ writer?!? IDK about people who just _hate_ this book ... IMA read _Savage Detectives,_ next.

This was probably the section of the book that I disliked the most, although it was also the shortest, so that did mitigate things somewhat. Still, I'm enjoying hearing your takes on the book; I'm always open to the fact that I may have missed something. But I always thought the book on the clothesline was meant to be a magic thing. I dunno, I'm prolly off base with that tho.
