There is much in this part I didn't touch on that is important to what I think Bolano is doing. None less than the "Seer," a woman who has visions of the murders and what is going on in Santa Teresa. Another example of unconscious/irrationality taking precedence over logic/rationality. Something we have seen in previous parts of 2666.

Great video, Noah. The different characters who stay with us throughout this part shed so many different perspectives that end up unifying to reveal how horrifying this world can be. The way women and the lives are dismissed by those who should try to defend them or bring justice is deeply unsettling. This was the section I had to read across weeks, a few pages at a time, and it kept making me reconsider the world and each action that makes it better or worse. It’s a terrifying reality that Bolaño depicts. Thanks for sharing this! Best, Jack

Love your analysis. I've been struggling through this book for 8 months now because I just don't care. Everything is told from such a distance that I'm bored. It's like he's just a reporter. Warning to those who haven't read it yet, don't play a drinking game based on his use of the phrase "hyoid bone" because you'll die.

Yeah this is the part of the book I hated the most. The character work bottomed out completely by jumping around and attempting to cover so much, thereby ironically robbing the violence of its impact, since there's no connection between the reader (or at least not this reader) and the endless stream of victims who are introduced and then killed within the space of three sentences. Tbh, it was really just boring to read, at least for me. And it's ironic to me that people champion this section as exemplifying the book's supposed pro-feminist viewpoint, even though Bolano himself consistently treats the female "characters" (and I use that word very loosely) in the book in a relentlessly misogynistic manner. But, nevertheless, as always, I enjoyed your take on it. And I'm anxious to see how you feel about the book overall after reading the final section. :)
