Information about the internal sensor would be helpful indeed.

Good video. Hit it with the screwdriver. Let's see inside it. Personally I think the only thing it picked up in that Hakko was the AC transformer 50/60 hz resonance.

Thank you for another interesting video, Peter. When I first saw the title, I thought: "Has Peter started paranormal investigations"😂? Because EMF-meters are often used in paranormal investigations, but after I saw your video, I realized that this has nothing to do with supernatural forces ha ha ha. Again thank you Peter for another interesting video. 73 LB5JG Asle

Thanks for the vid. I was actually wondering about those devices since a long time but more or less came to the conclusion that everything which is not expensive as a car is probably going to be snake oil or so inaccurate, that the readings are more like a trend and there by unuseable. Tnx and all the best 73s de DM8LE

(off topic) Is there part 5 of balun series, like a 49:1 ? Is there any improvements over the ordinary style with enamal coated solid wire?

I am sure these type of EMF meters are used by electrical engineers to trace hidden wires behind walls and there parameters only cover between 50-60mhz which is what electric wires resonate at.. they are used to trace EMF rather than give any values.. they also only work on the x-y axis which is why you have to move it about to get any reading which can give a misleading value.. also a better meter like an Avo meter uses all three axis x-y-z to get a more accurate reading.. Any source of EMF reading outside of the 50-60mhz range is just a floating measure and could mean anything and totally inaccurate.. However EMF meters like these will register just about any strength on the milli gause meter but without a reference to start from again means that any readings you get could mean absolutely nothing.. yes they will pick up and read a high measure of EMI but it's not an accurate measure of anything because there are all sorts of other sources of EMF in the locality such as electrical wires, fuse boxes, even the power box that runs the electricity into a property, there are also underground electrical cables nowadays running everywhere and also all manner of plug in devices we use into wall sockets.. also computer screens TV screens, not to mention WiFi signals. So to get a stable base reading to measure anything accurately is next to impossible to set a standard measurement. This is another reason why fake ghost hunters use them in there investigations to detect supposed spirits of the dead to prove they exist because they will take a reading and bleep at just about anything so they can fool their audience.. Yes they will read high EMF and EMI but these meters are so far off being accurate with a true base reading it's impossible to say what any reading from them can be used as a factual measurement of energy.

Color me skeptical. For a device to be calibrated over that frequency range would be laboratory equipment. The decimal point on the price needs to move over a couple of places.

Very true tho! The frequency response is usually only usable and linear within common ISM bands or frequency they match the antenna. The actual freq-reponse is terrible

i suppose you should hold the emf detector at least 1M away from the Hakko. I have one and it can detect HF but i didn't try other bands other than 10M yet. That was 3.5Ghz not 35000Mhz.

Just considering the target tin foil hat market it should be called an Electro Bias Confirmation meter. I put this in the same class of instruments as water divining rods.

There is a lot to learn about EMF sensitivity, we are not well understood. It is possible the same applies to divining rods.

No need to buy this expensive equipment. Just put a regular cb radio and a good antenna like a Sirio 5000 or President Colorado and with a magnetic mount on the roof of a car and drive around. You'll be chocked how many people literally turned their house into microwave ovens and live in it. No wonder there a so many cancers

The use of the word "electrosmog" is a big red flag. It means it is a product intended to extract money from people that suffer from Radiophobia and/or Electrophobia. These products are often designed to scare these people, making their condition worse. Beeping at harmless fields like those emitted from the transformer in that soldering station (that are everywhere and easy to detect) but at the same time being insensitive to other EM fields. It is like constantly telling people with Arachnophobia (irrational fear of spiders) horror stories about people getting killed by spiders. And then selling some crap that claims to repel dangerous spiders. I clicked on that amazon link and other advertised products are all sorts of B.S. like a net to put over a wlan access point. This type of scam mostly comes with a grain of truth to make it believable, like venomous spiders exist and can kill you just like strong electromagnetic fields exists and can cause burns. But at the end of the day, almost all the harm is done by the anxiety and stress caused by these irrational fears (and maybe financial problems after buying all the related crap). We naturally fear the unknown, if out of control, this can cause a phobia. Exposure therapy and Cognitive behavioral therapy are the most effective treatments and both involve exposure and learning details and real risks of the subject of the phobia. Learning how to reliably measure electromagnetic fields and knowing the associated risks without any scaremongering could be part of a therapy for the affected people. Cheap and reliable measuring equipment that isn't designed to scare but to measure would be a great step forward, it would help everyone. We live in the time where we can buy cheap and usable measuring equipment that would have cost as much as a car or even a house just 20 years ago. The NanoVNA is a great example. Of course, a VNA is easier to calibrate then an EMF meter, but this is something that could be done at the factory. To calibrate such a device, you first have to build a TEM Cell (search for "do it yourself TEM Cell", and build it big enough for common EMF meters including their probes), it is basically a transmission line that is widened up so you can put something into it. On one end you have a generator (frequency generator + amplifier) and on the other side a dummy load. Inside of that TEM cell is then a uniform electromagnetic field. You can measure it with a calibrated EMF meter, then put your uncalibrated EMF meter into it and compare. This is how the calibration of one device is used to calibrate another. It can be done by hobbyists and it should be easy for companies that sell measuring equipment. But I doubt that anything like this will ever happen to an "electrosmog meter".

EMF sensitivity is real, it's complicated, I explained this. I and the people I know are not scared of EMF, we feel pain from it. EMF devices helped me a lot to lower EMF and find solutions. I don't have the meter in this video, I have many other meters that are probably a lot better. They sell a lot of garbage.

So typical. They are offering some equipment, but as you ask them for a calibration certificate, they tell you they are working on it, but they never finish. This is nothing more than euphemism to tell you we don't provide the certificate. Furthermore. That unit indicates permanent magnet, but the manual says the bandwidth is 5Hz to 3.5GHz, but the permanent magnet is well below the 5Hz (in fact, its magnetic field is stable in time), so this should not affect the readings, but okay, the real bandwidth could be much wider going down to the zero. And there is one another at least "sanity check". Just put some signal into antenna and put this unit far enough to be sure the the electromagnetic field is properly formed and take the measurement. Then double the distance to the exciting antenna and take second measurement. The EM field weakens proportional to the square of the distance. Easy. And I am almost sure, that this unit will not pass this simple test. In fact, units like this are much more esoteric than being real meters, so I don't care much about them, but, on the other hand, this is an interesting video.
