Good to see mag loops are alive and well on 11m and the Freebanders
@m1aws10 жыл бұрын
I made one with a 3m x 20mm cu pipe. Bending it by hand meant I had to cut off about 6"~8" from each end. Found the capacitance for 11m was literally soldering the ends together with double sided copper circuit board. So it was a solid ring with no tuning required For efficiency the coupling of the Faraday loop (1/5 of main loop dia) is paramount..Mine was close coupled into a triangle with the co-ax "earthy" end against the loop. It was brill in the garden. Get a music player and rotate the goon away. Most effective.

Hi matey. I am in Corby. I just love messing about with loop antennas. Not used mine up a hill yet as still experimenting. Had it over a year now and fantastic reception on the HF bands. Cheers from old George normally in garage. Ps not really much C B work so what's a good freq to listen too and uk time day etc.

11 meters is supposed to be limited to QRP 4 watts AM 12 watts SSB in the United States, but we will always have those people who run 100 watt 10 meter radios modified to operate on 11, and the scant few crazies that run 10KW linear amps. Nice job, mate! Cheers, 73s KI7AQJ

I just finished making a square one out of 19mm copper pipe. I used a butane blow torch to solder the elbows. I was aiming for self resonance at 27mhz with no capacitor and just a gap at the top. I got close but unfortunately it's a shade too short. I made it 1.2 by 1.2m. In hindsight 1.25m square would have been perfect as it needs only about 3pf to get it to tune to 27.205. A touch annoying but when I get it tuned it puts out a cracking signal with 4watts according to my field strength meter.

Good work! I have a homemade loop antenna, made from cooper tube (diameter = 3/8'').The diameter of this antenna is roughly 19 Inches. I live on the fourth floor in nine-floor house . The variable capacitor is an air capacitor (two sections) from an old radio.I connected the loop between 2 stators plates. I put ito my antenna 0.7W (27MHz).But.. unfortunately an reception range was only 400 feets. There is a heigh building (9 stairs) next to my hause.

FYI "REF" stands for "reflected", not "reverse".
@26CT14453 жыл бұрын
Part of the RF voltage may be reflected back from the antenna in a reverse direction. SWR is a measure of what is happening to the forward and reverse voltage waveforms and how they compare in size.

It's the trick to take the loop diameter just right for the desired frequency. The radio capacitor should have low capacitance, of say about 30 pf max. That way, tuning should be more easy, and the antenna works better...
@johnblaisdell21793 жыл бұрын
I find that size isn't critical (my wife would disagree lol). What is important is that the primary is 1/5 the secondary. For example a 4'' primary loop and 20'' secondary. A 50pf capacitor works great also. Experiment with round vs oval primary for more or less coupling.

Can you slip a garden hose over the exposed copper tubing of the big loop for child safety, if not, how about electrical tape? will insulating the big loop affect it in any way? one more, is the exposure to the field it creates harmful to man or dog in any way?
@26CT14459 жыл бұрын
smokeymountainrain Yes I would say you could. As to if the RF field is harmful that would depend on the input power and proximity to the loop as with all antennas.

Wooh did not realise that the voltage would be so high on the loop. Any idea how much would be generated at say 100 watts TX ?

Yep the high Q equals 1000s of volts and 10s of amps. I bought some Comet 15KV variable vacuum caps (Swiss Made) for a loop antenna to run at 300 watts. I may try it at 600 watts, but I doubt it would handle my newest home brew linear amp.

10 Meter antenna build HELP PLEASE I built a similar antenna as the colossal 15Kw antenna, and see there i a capacitor on it? my question is what kind of a capacitor and how should it be connected My antenna is actually large copper radiator .64 wave calculated to half of that in hopes I get that little bump the .64 wave is know for! it is 1 1/4" copper to 1” copper to 1/2” copper radiator antenna pieced together. then the 8 radials coiled 10 gauge wire around fiberglass rods at 55% down slope. I will tune it for 50 ohms and low SWR But it is built tuff and am now looking to test with meters to see where it resonates, but thinking that it should have a static release the 8 coiled rods are attached to a 1’2” thick aluminum 7” diameter plate each coil is 103” long on a 4 foot rod and may ALSO BE MADE TO RADIATE? I intended to have this for ground plain only and have the aluminum plate grounded to ground rod I have driven 8 feet into the ground. some thoughts? static concerns? etc. thanks Geronemo in ND

good afternoon I have here the material to make one of these antennas by ca home to 11 meters for a balcony but I have some doubts of how I connect rg-58 cable and 2 meter tube to the capacitor can not-find a step scheme by step another thing is that I can put a garden hose in the copper tube? sorry for my ignorance 73
@26CT144510 жыл бұрын
Hi MultiJorgecardoso cardoso The outer copper tube is not connected in any way to the RG-58, the feedline is connected to the inner coax loop only. To connect the outer copper loop to the capacitor I used thick copper wire. Keep the wire as short as possible to prevent losses. I was able to use a mains powered soldering iron to solder the wire to each end of the copper tube. Hope that helps :-)

+R oh (thunder) Depends for which band you wish to operate. I have a loop that has a 30 to 250PF variable cap rated at 3kv and the loop is 3 feet in diameter. It tunes 40m thru 15m. It can handle about 35watts. Good luck.
