Thanks for the review! Do you think that your conclusion could be a result of an illusion? What I mean is, the 29er felt faster because you were watching a skinnier tire roll. In contrast the plus size tire probably gave you the illusion that it was moving slower and thus giving you a mental illusion of a slower ride. Similar to the way that the plus size tire gave you the illusion that it was more capable and so you were more confident versus the skinny or Tire that might take away some of the confidence and cause you to take different lines. What do you think could it be all due to an illusion?

I think Plus got a bum wrap so quickly and people weren't willing to look past the BS from much of the media talking about it being a great beginner/intermediate rider thing. I own a shop so am lucky enough to get to do laps on piles of bikes. For me the weird thing is laps on the Plus bikes never felt fast, but the clock told me differently - both up and down - and the more rooty and rocky the trail, the more you'd notice the quicker times on plus tires... don't matter now, plus ain't cool but all the bike companies build bikes capable of putting on 2.6 tires that, in many cases, measure the same width as the old plus tires... but nobody has to ride that beginner plus tire crap now. ha. Great job on the channel.

I was on a 29er hardtail most of last season and I'm on a 27+ hardtail this season. The 29er was a little faster, climbed a little better, but I felt way the hell more clumsy on that bike vs the 27+. I'm not sure I'd ever go back to a 29er hardtail now that 27+ seems here to stay and will continue to improve.

I mountain biked in Alaska for a number of years. I have been on slicked over ice like that, where water running on the surface melted the top and made it slicker than snot. Even with my studded tires (homemade using sheet metal screws) I could barely stay upright. It was so slick, I literally could not walk. If I tried, I immediately found myself on my rear end. Riding, even with studs biting in ice, was “washy;” I was all over the place and my wheels were just completely unable to track. It’s sketchy! Water melted ice is crazy stuff. There are so many undulations, ridges, and troughs that are melted by the water that it’s incredibly difficult to adapt. Crazy stuff!

Science or not thanks for making this video! I'm looking to buy the same frame (not the big gonzo version) since I have a better parts match. You helped answer the question I was thinking of for putting 27.5 on the 29er frame. Cheers!

Exactly my experience. I have a plus bike with 29 and 27.5+ wheelsets. My times were the same as well. 29 feels faster but harsher. Honestly I love both sets of wheels but for different reasons. The deal breaker on the 27.5s is the pedal strikes. I have 175 cranks and I cracked a chester pedal after just a few rides even with the chip in High position. Sticking with the 29s for now. May try the plus wheels again in the snow this winter or if I do downhill only.

I'm riding in CT, so very much the same terrain you rode in this vid. I even rode that setup at Killington Bike Park last year and did not feel like the plus tires were holding me back at all. Good video. Looks like a fun place to ride as well. Our area in the Midwest is more hard pack Single track with minimal roots and rocks. I'm on the fence about 29r vs 27.5+. I guess if I go 27.5+ there are varying rolling resistance options. Surly Dirt Wizards have a lot of rolling resistance but WTB Rangers and Maxxis High Rollers are pretty lower rolling resistance. The Vittoria Cannoli seems pretty low rolling resistance too
@josh331726 жыл бұрын
Good video! I did a similar test but my thoughts were a bit different but also the terrain was a lot different as well. So I own a Kona Honzo ST, and used the same wheelsets both OEM Novatech hubs laced to RF Arc rims (35 for 29er, 40 for 650b) on Maxxis Forecaster 2.35, Ardent Race 2.35 for the 29er and Recon + 2.8 and Recon + 2.8 for the 27.5+. The biggest difference was that I rode both bikes with the same 130mm Pike. The reason being that I personally feel that a 120mm fork ramps up too fast and feels completely at odds with the geometry and the trail bike feel. I also feel that putting a 140mm fork is going to add a significant amount of compliance in addition to the 27.5+ over the 29er, so I wanted to mitigate it to the same trail feel. The terrain is fast and for the most part smooth but with tons of exposed roots and coral rock. Its also pretty technical with features around every corner. I should add that its always hot and very humid so rotational weight can sap a lot of energy. I didn't do a Strava segment comparison because there is always complications in terms of other riders on the trail (high traffic MTB) and getting caught behind other riders is inevitable. So I went solely off of feel..... which is subjective, but it did give me a good indication of what I feel is better. What I found is for where I am at, and the terrain that is local here, 29er all the way. It was mentioned that the 27.5+ were more prone to sidewall damage, and that was the case twice but luckily I was able to stuff the bacon strips in on the sidewalls and got a seal. On top of that, the 29er felt faster, they were less sensitive with tire pressure....I had to stop 3 times to let out (and add) pressure to the 27.5+ tires, and it became a game where I preferred the tires softer on the fast smooth stuff, and more pressure on the rooty rocky stuff because it felt like the tire squirmed and bounced around. I just really couldn't get along tinkering with the PSI constantly depending on the the trail I was riding. 29er tires were set-and-forget and I had no problems with grip. I didn't notice too much difference between the wheels spinning up even though there was like a 200g difference. What I did notice was the extra rolling resistance and the tires decelerating as well on the 27.5+. It felt like I was constantly doing more work to maintain speed. I think if the trail was slow and chunky and sloppy, maybe it would have been different. Now to be clear, it wasn't really XC that I was riding, there was plenty of chunk, short spikey climbs both rocky and rooty up and down and tons of berms where both wheelsizes benefit. Basically kind of a similar profile of trail but not in winter. My personal opinion as it pertains to the Honzo.....run it with a 130mm or 140mm fork, its so much more of a joy when you're riding a fork that the geometry is asking for. However, I am currently selling my Honzo frame and going to the Santa Cruz Chameleon, and I may attempt the same test again. The reason for switching is that I'm kind of a closet SC fanboy and have ridden SC bikes since '99, but also me and the steep seat tube angle just could not get a long, and the Chameleon's is much slacker. I had access to the Honzo Ti, and a friend wanted to sell me his, and it does feel a lot lighter, but again the seat tube angle just didn't work for me. Just a different perspective.

I always wanted to make this comparison myself but I don't have two wheel-sets for the same bike. What I do have is two different hardtail bikes, same brakes, same drivetrain, but in terms of wheelsets, the 29er with Geax Goma 2.4 front and Geax Aka 2.2 rear both with tubes (Geax=Vittoria), the other one runs two tubeless Schwalbe Rocket Ron 27.5 3.0. I can tell the 29er is faster and lighter, but the 27.5+ is definitely more fun to ride. You can roll over anything. Nice video.

I appreciate this video. I recently managed to get my first boost 29/27.5+ hardtail frame (NS bikes Eccentric 29 Cromo) and just got it set up with a boost fork and 27.5x3.0 WTB Bridger tires. Reason being I can't really afford a decent full suspension frame and my local terrain is super rooty. I'd been wondering if I should worry about trying to get a 29 wheelset and this video helped me decide not to worry about it yet.

FWIW.. I have a full suspension and it's great fun to smash through rough stuff, but riding my hardtail is like a breath of fresh air! I'm going to swap my hardtail for a plus size version soon. I have that same NS frame and wheelsets in both sizes for it. I prefer 27.5 + on it mostly for the extra compliance since hardtails beat you up if you ride them hard.

Great review! Not all videos comparing tire sizes and wheel sizes need to be scientific. I feel like if you notice a difference that’s all that matters, I mean your the one riding the bike so if your happier with one setup over the other stick with that. For me, I haven’t gotten a boost fork so the + setup will wait. Nice to see someone try both and give an unbiased opinion on them. For now my Honzo will live as a 29er until I can fund a new fork and wheelset! Cheers from Ny, keep up the vids man! #hardtails4lyfe

I rode the switchblade in both modes and while I experienced the same as you, more comfortable in general and the traction was incredible, I just couldn't deal with the pedal strikes in 27.5+ mode. Even in the 29 version, which is what I bought, I left the 17mm cup in to keep the bottom bracket up as high as possible to prevent pedal striking. Going to JRA in the spring and have them take it out to see how the bike feels, just to try something different. Great vids man, I assure you, more than 3 people are watching, maybe like 5! :-)

I really liked the Switchblade in plus mode, though I kind of made a compromise by jacking up the rear shock pressure to reduce pedal strikes. Of course the other thing you deal with if you charge rocky trails on plus is flats. I have a hard time keeping air in plus tires, even on my singlespeed. And hey, thanks for watching.

And, although I feel that it rolls better with the 29' wheels, I nearly always choose riding with the plus wheels because it lets me go harder in the technical descends that I love. And because of that confidence that the plus tyres transmit, I am undoubtedly faster in the descents.

The most frustrating thing, as you mentioned is more flats (Sidewall dings) and pedal strikes. 29er set feels lighter by hand, but havent weighd it yet. Difference in bb height on my bike is around 15mm, which actually makes a big difference to feel! Must say, the plus is more fun, but for keeping up on an XC race, the 29 just makes more sense, it's up to how fit you are and feel.

I have it set up tubeless and, knock on wood, have yet to have a flat or sidewall puncture. Even though I thoroughly love my +size setup, I always wonder what the 29 option for my bike would feel like? I love speed and even though you're super scientific findings showed minimal gain in speed or quickness, I'm always left wondering if sacrificing a little of the "roll over anything" would be worth it for gaining what we will perceive as speed from the 29er? My 2018 goal is to convince my wife I need a set of 29er wheels! Wish me luck!

@DirtWireTV6 жыл бұрын
It's pretty confusing right now with all the wheel and tire sizes. It's my understanding that fat bikes have tires that are 3.8" or wider. Plus is a smaller category at just 2.8" or 3.0". And now you have "mid-fat" at 2.6". A lot of bikes will allow you to run 29 or plus. Since it's easier to find cheap(er) 29" wheel options aftermarket, I'd probably recommend getting the plus wheels on the initial build. I think it's sweet to have both options. Hope that helps!

looking into the stache 5. What do you think about a 29+? Since the + tires makes the 29er even wider and taller will it make a difference on my riding? Will I have a harder time jumping? Alternative is the Roscoe 8 but my friends have those and I want to be different. Live in Maine so I need a plus for winter.

I haven't actually tried 29+, just 29 X 2.6 (which was rad). The 3.0s might be harder to jump. I suck at jumping but I do know that I feel better on my 27.5 trail bike than I did on my old 29er trail bike.

ok thanks man. I will ask my local bike shop too.

Make sure you get out and ride as many wheel and tire sizes as you can. I'm finding that a plus bike is no substitute for an actual fat bike when the snow is over a few inches deep.

will do

Suspension parts and tires are tougher to find for a 29+. Less selection.

How tall are you? I'm 6'3" (34 inseam) and I've been told to stick with 29er×2.6" and not even bother with 27.5+.

Whats the advantage to a single speed MTB?
@DirtWireTV5 жыл бұрын
It's lighter, breaks less, it's faster for some people in some situations but it's mostly a disadvantage.

Well...at least you can ride your mtb bike in Jan. Up in Montreal, we have 4 feet of snow.

There's another tire permutation that doesn't get enough coverage: what about tire inserts? How about youz put some cush core in dem Vittoria 29s? Then you could run really low pressures without having to run the kid wheels. Ppl swear by the cush core but it's a royal PITA to install. I'd like to see that struggle time lapsed! C'mon, its an indoor winter project, dude! You get two videos, maybe three, out of it.

I'm not averse to that idea, I'll look into it. I'm also not averse to my kid wheels.
@thwood406 жыл бұрын
Me neither the kid wheels ☮️ but all that sidewall hanging out there makes an easy target for the sharp and pointys. It's a plus problem, not a 650b prob. And maybe a too narrow rim problem... The tire muffin top... Anyway, inserts are still in early adopter phase it seems. There should be more interest in them. Tokens for your tires...🤓

Oh yeah, totally on the easier target. I'm running 40mm rims and I've heard from riders I respect, and who I know ride as rocky or rockier terrain as I do, that they have good luck with the 35mm rims. I don't know, maybe Boston #eastcoastrocks are just pointier than PA #eastcoastrocks. Maybe I need to steer my bike better, who knows.
