I had a chassis a while back that would not display properly with out that black wire. No clue why and it was long enough ago I do not remember exactly what the screen did with out it.

If it’s routed through the flyback incorrectly, the left 1/3rd of the screen will be black. You either have to route it through the flyback in the opposite direction or just remove the wire completely.
