My favorite way to describe Spock's Beard is "side two of 'Abbey Road' with chops". Like one if the other commenters said,, "hook after hook after hook". This is my favorite song from one of my favorite bands. I didn't know about the Kevin Gilbert connection until reading the comments here. It means even more to me now.

I genuinely love watching you noodling along to the song as you first experience it, feeling it out a bit.

Some fun bits about this song: Kevin Gilbert posthumously sings the line “What does it matter?” The industrial sound effects and Greek chorus are based on mr Gilbert’s love for weird atmospherics. Nick D’Virgilio finished Kevin Gilbert’s concept album after KG died (at age 29). The album, The Shaming of the True, inspired Neal Morse to compose his concept album, Snow.

One of the classic Neal epics! How about Seeds of Gold next off of Testimony 2?

Excellent choice ,this IS one of m'y favorites from morse ..with the door ,and similitude of a Dream, .all masterpieces. Try garden of Dreams (flowerkings) or invisible man(marillion).....

Beatle-esque - Neal has another band called Yellow Matter Custard. A cover band for the Beatles.

great piece to react to! And certainly you should probably listen to it a few more times to fully digest it. But as an initial listen, it still offers a lot.

From Neal Morse and his projects I suggest: The Door - Neal Morse Kaleidoscope - Transatlantic Infinite Fire - Flying Colors Flow - Spock's Beard

God, "The Door" is so great. I'm not even Lutheran and that song hits hard. The angry angst earlier on ("In the name of God you must die!/All that's not our truth is a lie.") and then that plaintive, almost vulnerable "I will write my words upon the door" at the end. What a ride.

I don't know if it is about Kevin Gilbert, I have heard Neal say it is dedicated to him and parts represent the musical journey he had been on.

Actually, the organ playing reminded me of Steve Walsh of Kansas...the whole song reminded me of Kansas(Kerry Livgren) composition-wise(minus the violin), with dashes of Supertramp and Gentle Giant

Saw them open for Dream Theater in San Diego back in, I wanna say 1999 or 2000 or so? Portnoy had a mask on and revealed himself while playing drums on one of their songs.

One of my favorite bands and one of the best prog rock bands out there with a ton of spinoff groups. For the quality of their compositions they tend to be somewhat ignored, which is unfortunate. Groups that spawned from or later had members that were in Spock's Beard include: Big Big Train, Neal Morse Band, Transatlantic, Pattern Seeking Animals, Flying Colors, The Fringe, Nick D'Virgilio's Invisible, various Neal Morse solo projects, Ryo Okumoto Project, etc. Definitely a good group to dig deeply into. ;) Thanks for doing this one, Prog Dog!

Each part is very wonderful. I love them. But for some reason I am not enamored with the song as a whole. Too many parts left me feeling scattered. Maybe my brain memory is too small to remember and pile up 27 minutes of many parts.
