Very sorry you had to go through not being allowed in that temple. There are a few temples where "foreign" looking people are not allowed in whole of India, generally, in other temples they are happy to have you inside. I hope this one experience doesn't discourage you to visit other ancient temples, the architecture and detailing is incredible.

It’s all part of the experience. I wanted to share honest feedback - the good, the bad and the ugly. I didn’t have any entry problems in any of the Shiva temples, somehow it was the Vishnu temples; both here and in Kerala. I don’t feel discouraged, because for the most part I felt welcomed in the temples as another one of God’s children, no matter my appearance.

I don't know why they don't allow non Hindus ?. Very unfortunate.

the reason why they dont allow non-hindus is because most of them come for touristy purposes and to take photos thereby interfering in the prayers of the hindus. nor do they understand the significance of the energy in the temple. tourists visit for architectural purposes for which access to the outer precincts is sufficient ! ofcourse there are some exceptions like ashley!

That makes sense. I could see how that would be totally annoying to worshippers and also kill the vibe. I do however think the notion that tourists would even want to come to a temple in the first place is kinda interesting, as tourists would naturally be drawn to more touristy activities. If anyone is drawn to marvel at the beauty of the architecture despite knowing too much about it, as well as overcoming any feelings of intimidation to enter such a place, the key focus would be respect. I could be wrong, but the energy of the guard who made this decision did not come across as having a concern for respect issues, rather he had an energy of political undertones, and it was a shame that such gate-keeping behavior could override any pre-arrangements with the office and the priest. Either way, you are probably right in that just walking around the outer precincts is sufficient. The energy was still very intense all around the grounds. I do feel that it is God who calls people to temples. If it is meant to be then it is meant to be, if it’s not, then it’s not.

Srirangam temple has been facing some challenges due to interference of government appointed officials vs priests who have been performing the rituals for generations. So you identified correctly the reason. The govt officials want to run it their way to show they are in control. We hope it would change over the coming years. Glad you embraced the energy! And braving the peak summer heat which is reached new heights this year !
