Jim Lawler:
Mr. Lawler serves as a national security consultant and is the Senior Partner at MDO Group, which provides HUMINT training to the Intelligence Community and the commercial sector focused on WMD, CI, technical and cyber issues. Mr. Lawler is a noted speaker on the Insider Threat in government and industry. Prior to this, Mr. Lawler served for 25 years as a CIA operations officer in various international posts and as Chief of the Counterproliferation Division's Special Activities Unit. His overseas assignments include Bern Paris Oslo and Zurich (1991-1994).
Mr. Lawler was a member of CIA's Senior Intelligence Service (SIS-3) from 1998 until his retirement in 2005. He was a specialist in the recruitment of foreign spies, and he spent well over half of his CIA career battling the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Another tremendous episode Robin, there is always the consistent thread with your guests of leveraging trust, relationship building, active listening and building rapport. How did you deal with the barriers that people may have put up if they felt some manipulation? And secondly how did/do you deal with the feelings you may have when looking for peoples “cracks” or vulnerabilities? It seems to me the two sides of the coin? Thanks again great work…

Great questions. I can’t speak for Jim… but I believe what he sees as “cracks” I see as pain points in someone’s life. I am consistent with my personal brand as a human that I will be a resource for others in terms of their priorities and pain points. I haven’t had anyone confront me with saying I was manipulating because of my actions and words as well as full transparency was always congruent. Transparency is the true key. In the episode Jim talked about how straight forward he was. He never tricked anyone into anything. That is the difference.
