Gotta pick up the receiver. You cant dial with the line closed.

That was awesome. In my mid-50's (born in '66), and have found out how to connect, through bluetooth (which I've never used), rotary phones and use them again. Even though they're not connected to landlines anymore, I still prefer the ringing of the rotaries.

I am now 66 years old now and recently got my old childhood rotary phone. Amazon sells something called “cell to jack” and with the Bluetooth you can use the old rotary phone. It’s fun to have youngsters come over and try to use it. LOL. Also my last job I had, the young guy was told to make a correction on his paper by using that typewriter over there. He said he didn’t know how to put the paper in….lol. Does anyone remember the two (only two) types of “fonts” there were?

At least you don't pick up the mouthpiece and say "Sarah, could ya please get me..."

I high school, I worked in the school library for a semester. I am 66 years old/o now and have never been in a library to look up anything with the computers they have now a days. I learned a lot from the librarian who taught the class

This must be an unusual case. I remember my grandparents still having phones like that when I was growing up, I am 28. No way a 28 Year old today doesn’t know how to use one of these phones.

My grandparents had one too. More as a keepsake than anything, but it did work. I’m over 40, and when I was a kid we didn’t have internet or cell phones. He doesn’t know a world without those things. You’re lucky to have had grandparents to show you how different technology was and how fast it’s evolved. It’s an interesting perspective. Thanks for sharing.

@@kevinfranklin3631At 28 I am in a weird generation. I grew up without the internet, we didn’t have wireless broadband until 2006 maybe, so I spent all my pre teenage years without internet. We had dialup but it was too expensive and my parents wouldn’t let me use it often. So imaging a world without internet/social media, is very normal to me but I also grew up with it during my teenage and early adult years, so I have lived both worlds, I suspect the same for him! I remember fax machines and floppy disks, VHS, tapes, when vacuum cleaners took paper bags, all sorts from the time before, it was still very present in my childhood but just not as long as maybe for someone like you. Going back to the video, I can’t believe he didn’t know to pick up the handset first! That is the same with all landline type phones, even today.

i still use a gpo dial phone. Cos i find them easyer to use. esp in the dark or very little light, which i can do 1st time every time, but if i use a push button phone, in low light or in the dark, i either get the wrong number or i just end up giving up, i suppose its what yer used to, cos even though i have a mobile, trying to get a signal in the area i live in, is useless, so i use a landline & have a gpo dial phone

I was born in the 1980s, so rotary was being phased-out in favor of push-button keypads, but I still interacted with rotary phones up until the early-2000s. _That being said,_ if you were to place a (what are they called?) cup-on-a-stick phone or the even earlier wooden-box-on-the-wall phones with _no buttons or dial_ in front of me, the hard part _for me_ would be navigating through the live operators, because that was all automated by the time I was born! *=)* (Didn't they also have a hand-crank-? I _don't_ know what _those_ were used for.)

The crank was used to ring the operator and to signal when you finished with the phone call so the operator could unplug the wire at the terminal.

you would overload someone from todays generation if you showed them how the old switchboards worked with the girls plugging in the lines and handwriting the information to feed to a machine that figured the charges.

Hahaha! How's the phone know anything? It doesn't, it just sends pulses to the phone company to tell their phone exchange system what other number you're trying to connect to.
