hey guys. here is the engine out of my Cub cadet GT 1554 that I bought last year. I've never seen this problem before, have you?

That was very interesting Dave. Well now you have some more part for the trunk.

Hi Dave had the same problem with a 17hp Kohler courage and broke the engine casing trying to remove the crank shaft. The bush and shaft were welded together.

Hi there Patrick. You have? Wow. I wonder how common this is?

I had the same thing happen shot some pb blaster in the top where the seal was put a big pipe wrench on it and worked it back and forth till it turned free .the oil pump screen was completely plugged.

So just trying to put out some friendly advice I am currently tearing one apart right now and rebuilding it, mine only has a blown head gasket, but behind they seal their where it welded the is an oil hole that supplies oil to the bearing that the crank rides on if that seal was tapped all the way in I believe no oil will get to the crank causing this to happen but just my two cents hope it helps

Makes sense to me. I bought it this way. I put a vanguard in it

That sucks ! Is that the flywheel side that fused ? What if you hold the remaining half of the block and give the crank a wack with a huge hammer like a sledge hammer. You have nothing to loose. Why are the new Kohlers such junk ?
@davessmallenginerevival28473 жыл бұрын
Yes it's the flywheel side. I just might try putting wood in there and try it again but I suppose if I do get it out the shaft in that spot would be trashed. Yup these new kohlers are pretty bad especially the single cylinders. My other 27HP Kohler in my super LT has almost 900 hours on it though so I don't know could be just luck

Happend to me last year beat the crank out with a bfh and sent the crank cases out to machine shop and had them sleeved and clean all aluminum off crankshaft and put her back together. Its bc kohler and b and s are using the case as there bushings its bullshit
@acrophobiar1 Жыл бұрын
They start off by leaking oil out of valve covers until there is not enough and engine overheats

Never seen that happen before. Doesnt look like there is many hours on it. Probably a manufactoring fault.
@davessmallenginerevival28473 жыл бұрын
If I remember right it has less than 300 hours

I also have hard time to remove crankshaft, but crank shaft is turning freely. So there is something I can't understand. Any suggestions?

What if you try to get some muriatic acid in there and work the crank back and forth to maybe get the aluminum to melt away from the crank? Worth a shot!
@davessmallenginerevival28473 жыл бұрын
Yeah might be worth a try. It's just so weird

Hey Dave, not sure about what the problem could be. But if you have a tree to cut down I could give you advice. LOL Take care
@davessmallenginerevival28473 жыл бұрын
Hey John. I wish I could have you come over and cut these darn trees. I'm in the middle of watching you're wheelbarrow video, funny🤣
@stevoj89593 жыл бұрын
That is definitely unfortunate cause that engine looks good. My have to pull out the grinder and cut the crank out to save it. At least you've got some good parts. Stevo

Thanks stevo. I was thinking about doing just that

Well, a Kohler Courage will finally become useful; as a boat anchor!!

Same thing just happened to me. Engine quit while running. Main fuse blown. Smoke was coming up out of the flywheel area. Pulled flywheel. One of the magnets had turned loose and destroyed the stator. Got the regulator also. Then noticed the engine was locked up. Crank arcing to the case makes sense.

Hey there Dave!!! That is what you call a SNAFU. The engine is done for!!! Nice that you found out what happened though!!! Too bad, that's a nice engine. Take care!!!
@davessmallenginerevival28473 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike. It would seem the shorting out of the stator welded the two together but , how weird is that!!

@nashguy2073 жыл бұрын
What a shame. I don't think I have ever seen or heard of that happening before. It must of gotten pretty hot and basically welded the shaft to the bearing i guess the bearing had to lock up for that to happen.
@davessmallenginerevival28473 жыл бұрын
Hey there Bob. I think when the stator shorted out it got the shaft so hot it welded it right to the block. No bearings in these kohlers, the shaft rides in the block , oil gets in there to lubricate it. Most engines don't use bearings anymore, which is stupid if you ask me but I suppose they save money that way. So weird though ain't it? If I remember right this engine had less than 300 hours on it. The 27HP in the super LT has almost 900 !!! I just don't get it. Take care my friend
@johnrazor87203 жыл бұрын
Well that sucks. How can steel and aluminum fuse together? Not sure reheating it would do any good.
@davessmallenginerevival28473 жыл бұрын
Hi John. I don't know but that's what happened. I'm going to put it in the press and try heating it but at this point with the block now cracked it won't do much good anyway. Thanks buddy

I got mine apart as well. Just curious did you have aluminum stuck to the crank shaft and if so what you did to clean it up. First time working on this type of engine and was kinda shocked to see that there is no actual bearing there.
@sethdiehl53142 ай бұрын
@@Earthen6 I used muriatic acid to loosen the aluminum n it dissolved it off then I polished the crank with Emory cloth

@@sethdiehl5314 ok yeah. I spun mine on a makeshift lathe and used emory cloth as well came real clean. Just waiting on a new oil seal to finish it up. Thanks for the reply
