Are you crazy enough to go out in the snow to use an antenna like I just did ?😎

Applying a single vertical radiator to the red terminal and two radial legs to the black terminal will transform this antenna into a groundplane antenna,ideal for working DX.

Don't forget to wrap around a dozen turns on the coax as a choke. 1" PVC works great for this, but not necessary, just about anything works. And of course grounding is required by nec and will bleed-off those static charges that build up on insulated wire, especially in the dry, windy winter months. 73

I love using those BNC to banana connectors for antennas, but I do wonder about their long-term strength. You might look into surrounding all but the BNC with one of J-B Weld's family of epoxy bonders. That should make the antenna connector strong and corrosion-proof.

@@hamradiowithkevin I've had another go at a slim Jim for 145.500 tried twice now but I can't get the swr below 1.4 tried 300 and 450ohm different sizes on the Internet. So unsure which one is right. Will have to do a test rig one day which allows me to try different measurements without commitment and waste ladder line. Tried two 300 and two 450ohm antennas. I can see the 1:1 dip but it's like 130.500. Maybe that could be my first video 🤔Motters 73

“Longer is lower / shorter is higher“. Can you explain that a little more? I thought if you want to lower the resonant frequency you need to shorten the wire. Am I wrong?
@hamradiowithkevin
@hamradiowithkevin Жыл бұрын
That is correct. The longer the element is, the lower in frequency your antenna will tune for. The shorter the antenna element is, the higher in frequency your antenna will tune for. There are some really good antenna building apps you can download that will show you and can help you when building an antenna. 73

Dear K7SW. Good afternoon. May I have one question? When you built this antenna you don't use tunner or ballon for this project? So do you use the simple raw inverted V-dipole antenna? In advance thanks for your reply.
@hamradiowithkevin
@hamradiowithkevin 3 ай бұрын
Yes, you are correct. The idea is to be simple and easy to use. Could you add all that you have described, most certainly. Just know that you will indeed make contacts and be able to use this antenna. Great question you had

So say you want to work both the ft8 and phone Ssb portion of the band will a antenna tuner solve this or would you need to make two different antennas one for each section?
@hamradiowithkevin
@hamradiowithkevin Жыл бұрын
Good question, make one antenna that is tuned for FT8. When you want to operate the phone part of the band, roll up both ends of the dipole just enough for where you want to operate. No Tuner required. Pre mark the amount you need to fold over to make it easier

I only used tent stakes in the ground and paracord to reach from the antenna wire to the tent stakes, I wish they would have shown up better.

@m0mcx, antenna's look fun to use. Callum is excellent at explaining everything he does with his products and he is very helpful with explaining so much about antenna design. I do hope to add a DXCommander to my collection. I have a friend that has one. He showed me how nice the setup is and how well it worked. Yes I would like to get one of those antennas.
