In Mechelen, 2800 Belgium, The Grote Markt, the central square in the historic centre, is dominated by St Rumbold's Tower. You can see it wherever you are. On the other side of the square is the Town Hall. Look at the houses round the Grote Markt. They are from different times and in different styles, including sixteenth-century renaissance and eighteenth-century rococo.
In 2004 the Grote Markt was made a traffic-free zone and an underground car park was built. While work was being carried out, archaeological finds were discovered, including an old well and a thirteenth-century street which would have been lined with market stalls. These days a very lively market is held here every Saturday morning.
