He doesn't simp for his crush. He has no interest in her and wants to leave initially. Then throughout most of the series he reluctantly goes along with her requests to solve mysteries because she is so persistent. Throughout the whole series there are only a handful of moments he shows moderate interest in her. At the very end he seems like he likes her but throughout the series they do not present the audience with much evidence of a romantic interest at all. He never thinks about her. He doesn't get shy around her. He doesn't try to make any advances towards her. None of that. The show and LN is a mystery series not a romance.

They did show some hit in romance. Houtaro gets shy when Chitanda sometimes get too close to his face. Dude literally fantasized about Chitanda multiple time in different forms like a Puppy or an angel or even a Goddess. One of them was him thinking about Chitanda taking a dip on the hot spring which got him dizzy afterwards. Dude cant even look Chitanda in the eyes when he saw her sitting next to him after he wakes up and immedietely start looking at her chest. He did it again when they went to the pool and saw Chitanda in a swimsuit. And that dude looked 3 times. You dont see him doing that to Mayaka or other female characters. Theres also the last episode where Houtaro got so curious that he wanted to see Chitanda when she wore a beautiful outfit. Dude even fantasized about telling Chitanda that he would like to take care of her Family's situation like that dude sounded like he was proposing to her then realized he was just day dreaming again. 😅
