Seen lots mow the other way round, but I was taught the same as you, and for the same reasons. Suspect as a lot of the land Terry owned and mowed was alongside lanes and tracks, where kindly folks used to throw little gifts over the fences, so as you said its much nicer to find them with the tractor not wrapped round or wrecking the mower.

In terms of how to mow a field, the way you do it agrees with the method described by Lord Muck on his channel, the logic being if you end up jamming up or damaging the mower on hedge debris it is after the bulk of the job is done, not right at the start. I am not a farmer and don’t even have a lawn at home, so no personal opinion to share!

I personally would have left the topper in the barn where it was, at least momentarily. Cause then you could open up space after mowing.

I also started a field the same way as you do and for the same reasons, but also because I was a young teenager some 55 years ago every field was new to me so I didn't know what to expect to run into and I was using finger bar mowers so always preferable to hit something with the near side front wheel rather than the end of the finger bar.

I caught the second live. It was great. I was waiting for a “‘ell ofa crop o’ grass”, but it never came. Going to be a fair bunch of bales from that for sure. Mighty nice to have good neighbours like that.

Always do the hedge round last when mowing…at least if you eat a stone or something nasty you’ve already cut the field…when I worked for a contractor 20 years ago with front and back mowers we learnt that it was better not to cut the ditch bout until last as front mowers are an expensive weight block once you’ve tried pushing them through granite!

@@Ian6630premium It’s just common sense if you think about it. I always dreaded cutting for anyone else, they always remember the concrete inspection cover or the old chain harrows…… After you hit them.😬🤬

@@FarmerP Been there,done it and got the T shirt with both a manhole cover and a chain harrow!! Wrote a mower off each time too! Always found that the farmers always cut their nice fields that have been harrowed and rolled but the contractor ‘helps out’ by cutting the unrolled fields with hidden objects!🤬 So glad I’m out of that game now!

I've been tought the same, first with the mower on the inside. It depends on the field, but 5/6 times, then do the outside rounds, no hegdes here, no fence/posts on our main hayfield either. But as our mower is an old pottinger 190 drummower, i have to do 2 reverses, since the tractor is a bit wider. But i love that mower, it's a drum mower, centre pivoted, so ground folowing is great and it's pto driven instead of belts, so i wont slip or clog up that fast. But i mostly drive middle box 4th hare. Even in this years long grass. I was surprises 😅

Getting older. Sorted getting up in the night - 2 Ibruprofen before bed means just one trip during the night. Glasses - although I have big lenses there's a gap between their edge and my face. A real bugger when trying to hook up the 3pt linkage as my eyes constantly refocus between looking through lenses and the gap. Aches & Pains - don't even start 😹😹😹

I'm in my early fifties, I'm on about 15 tablets a day, I need to wear specs almost all the time, I need to know where the bog (or something 😅) is when I am out and about.......oh and youngsters annoy me 😅. It depends on what type of mower , and how many I have on one tractor. 2 or 3. And depends on the visibility of the fence line. And state of headlands. But if I have 2 or more I start along the fence mowing. No extra round.. if I got just one I do the same as you ian.

@@antonyfarming The RH side light cluster is a bit covered over Antony. I have thought about stringing a light bar across the back, but it would be a pain. There is only one dodgy right hand turn on a long straight to tougher farm, I stay extra vigilant for that one.

Hi Ian, just a thought. Some days you struggle with uploading videos at 6pm due to farm work, have you thought of uploading a few days worth of videos and set them to go viewable on certain dates and you can set them to go up at 6pm, when I do my videos I put 4 or 5 up at a time but set them for different dates, just a thought that might help you when busy with mowing or other farming jobs that probably feel like it’s taking a life time.
