Congratulations on 29 years of ownership of this beautiful car. It's great that you can do many of the repairs and improvements on the car. Your car reminds me of my first Lincoln that I bought in 1986. It was a 1983 two door Mark Vl. It also had the hidden headlights, and a dark green velour interior. I loved the velour seats, as they weren't cold in the winter, or too hot in the summer when wearing shorts. My Lincoln and your Mercury are like "cousins." Paying 10.5% interest probably wasn't too bad on a car loan in 1994. I can remember when interest rates were extremely high in the early 1980's. I was getting 12% interest on a bank CD, and 7% interest on my checking account. Home mortgage rates were 14% and up.

I am the second owner and have never owned a Mercury before my other cars being a 1987 Crown Victoria wagon and a 1991 Crown Victoria wagon. My parents bought a 1978 4Dr Grand Marquis that was loaded with everything but moonroof, 8 track, and power passenger seat. It was a custom order by the dealership owner's wife but it was taking so long to get built she opted for something else. It was dove gray with blue interior and blue vinyl top and blue accent strips down the side. It also had the luxury wheel covers instead of the aluminum wheels. I learned to drive in this vehicle (can you imagine) It was the quietest, smoothest riding car I have ever driven or ridden in. Nothing like it ever in the years since. Absolutely fantastic car. I wish I had it today but sadly, mom had an accident and "totaled" it in 1986.

What a beautiful merc. It's so nice that the original harness' were there for the most part, so those accessories could be added properly. The paint looks great, a few blemishes are OK, much better than a repaint. Glad you were able to keep the red from fading, it's such a shame to see that on great old cars, the red is hardest to keep I'm guessing. I've developed a new respect for these cars since watching you and Adam. I would do anything to have my old 73 Caprice back, but the northeast winters consumed it. That is a beautiful lake, just the type of place I would love to retire. Thanks for taking us for a ride, wonder if the original owner is still alive to appreciate how you have cared for his car.

Wow! Today when I am watching this video, we are also celebrating my Dear Wife, Radha's, birthday today on September 2, 2023 on this great Labor Day weekend! We are watching this video because, as we speak, our long B-Body 1995 Black Buick Roadmaster is on the barge after leaving my home town of Fairbanks, Alaska, headed to Seattle, then to Vancouver, Washington by train, and finally to where we are by now by truck to Portland, Oregon. If we line up our black 1995 Roadmaster next to your black 1978. Grand Marquis, they would look like two brothers of the same type of cloth. I want you to know that I can really resonate well with your love and sentiment towards your gorgeous car, because we are car buffs that really appreciate that genre of cars that were the last of the classic land yachts from the mid-90s. I'm a car guy through and through and I honestly don't understand why anyone would object. I think it's cool that you added the power rear windows. You said "I was young then" Lol. I have done similar things, as I added factory AC to a 61 Thunderbird ten years ago, but the biggest job of all was adding factory AC to a 61 Continental convertible two years ago. The worst part? I sold both cars. I never learn. Anyway, very interesting car and history. I can also relate to the loan as I bought several older cars in the 90s and the interest rate was similar. Like you, I had to use someone else's money to achieve my old car goals. I like to think that we are the majority in the old car hobby, just working people who are glad to sacrifice to get an old car that we like. There was a similar looking Marc here in Kansas City for sale at a local car show. It was a yellow-gold two door, optioned out and also had the 400. At the time I thought what the heck? Truthfully though I'm sure it offers enough power to get down the road and especially now that it isn't a daily driver. My 76 Lincoln has the 460 but it is so smogged up that it certainly won't win any race against a 4 cylinder Honda. Enjoyed the video. Thanks for posting it.

Thanks for this. The first new car I bought was the 1978 2 door Mercury Marquis in Brougham (brown) colour. I had just got married and about to graduate from my first job which was selling cars. I had no options on it… no air (live in Southern Ontario, Canada) and manual wind windows. Huge car as the kids were coming in a few years. I loved the car…had some jiggles in the dash but… I drove it every day for 13 years and then sold it to my youngest brother for $1 and he had it for another 6 years. Just a great early family car.

Too funny about the tint. My garage has west facing windows and the garage gets so hot it melts or ruins almost anything you leave out there. So I decided to install heat reducing tint to the windows. Sweating my ass off for 2 hours I used over half the roll to cover one 12”x19.5” window and it had a tear and flaws. Hardest thing I have ever tried in my life and am the the guy that has convinced myself I can tackle anything. God said “Ha”. It was amazing the temp difference in front of that window compared to the clear windows but the thought of tinting 7 more window made me contemplate a bullet to the brain and I’m not joking (completely). It truly was like trying to fly a helicopter which I have heard discribed as trying to catch a dozen chickens all at one time. When you were talking about the tint I laughed because I had just had a similar or worse experience. I was alone with no one to share the laugh at how ridiculously difficult this task truly was. The tinting pro’s around here make it look so easy… easy it ain’t..

I wasn’t into cars until 1973 when my parents purchased a Mercedes Benz 280 sedan. It turned out to be a huge lemon! It broke down coming home from Disneyland after midnight. I rode in it once when about 6 of us went to a movie and my best friend’s cousin borrowed this from his mom and my best friends aunt. My mom and my best friends mom had 1977 Coupe de Ville’s so we were familiar with luxury cars and we were impressed with the big Merc. The ride was cloud like and the quietness was eerie. The caddy’s were smaller and handled better and I believe the 425-4 could take the behemoth with the 460-4 but not due to lack of power from the 460, the caddy was lighter and faster. The jade car of my friend had the moonroof and was just a spectacular large luxury car. 16:04

Awesome! Thanks for watching and commenting. I do have the cream and gold one with a moonroof, but I haven't shown it yet because it's not that nice.

Thanks for sharing your history on this beautiful car. I drove Mercury's and Lincoln's until they came out with the Seville. At one time I had two matching 71 Mercury Marquis, 1 midnight blue and the other was the dark green metallic. Speaking of Cadillacs did you ever find Adam did you ever find the filler panels for his Cadillac? Again thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much! I've had a 71, 72, and 73. I'm not sure if Adam found those yet or not. I'll see him next weekend and I'll ask him.

My aunt had one of these years ago. Two tone with leather interior. I think she bought it in the early 80's and traded it for a Lincoln about 3 years later

In my experience in mid 70's Fords from 0 to 50 mph and around town especially, the 400 actually feels better than a 460.
@tonyscarcare5657 Жыл бұрын
Oh, I don't think so. I've had them all. The 460 is definitely more powerful all the way.

First of all. I love the entrance You made with the Car on the headlight doors. 2nd is Some Cars looks better with fender skirts, but from the factory as was designed that way. Only bad issue about them, is tendency of rusting out faster in some places to uses a lot of salt on roads for melting ice. I have a 1989 Crown Victoria, the Sister to the Marquis. My interior is exactly same colour as that. In Your description, You really caught My attention when You told about the time delay for the wipers. Thus, the long comment. I had a 1979 LTD that was same body style & it had the timed wiper in it. Unfortunately, I ended up have to send it to the crusher after leaving it sit for a decade & it sank to the ground, & floor become a flint-stone car. I striped it keeping some of the parts before sending crusher, keeping the switch itself. Now, I went to put it in only to end up finding out that I did not know was needed called the modual. I can not find one up here where I live. My question to You is "Do You know where I can get one?" Same with the switches for Power Windows as I have all the motors.
@tonyscarcare5657 Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I probably have a delay wiper module somewhere, but I do not have all of the window switches.
@KensHobbies409 Жыл бұрын
@@tonyscarcare5657 That would be awesome. What would You like for it? Switches not as important, but would like to have the delayed wipers going again. Frusterating having to turn on & off all the time when just a drizzle.
I'm looking at possibly getting a 76, such a nice car

Great car Tony ! Amazing that you know how to fix and add all the electrical. Impressive. I drove a used '78 LTD back in my 20's. It had a 400 . I felt like it was plenty fast. How much horsepower/torque do you have with the dual exhaust in this Mercury? Wish I knew how to fix up these vintage cars. Love looking at them and driving them! Thanks for this video, appreciate the lake and campground view. - Jeff

Thank you very much, Jeff! I'm not sure how much it added losing the cats and adding the dual exhaust. It just been too long. I'll be doing the rear window repair video after I get back from Detroit.

Congratulations Tony on the fine purchases after such a grueling experience with your parent's accident. I have the 1989 Signature Series in Pastel Adobe Yellow with body side molding and rocker panel and it looks great after being washed and positioned in direct sunlight. It is a great car to drive and gets comments at traffice lights. Do you think the 1989 TC's will ever reach the status of the 1960's Continentals?
@tonyscarcare56572 ай бұрын
Thank you! I don't know that they will ever reach the 60s, but I believe the 89 is the last real saute after Lincoln. I don't think the 90s will do as well as the 03-11.
@kenzahner2682 Жыл бұрын
Tony, I am really impressed on how you were able to make the rear quarter windows power retract....in your opinion do you think this could be done on a '76 Cougar w/the same fixed quarter window?
@tonyscarcare5657 Жыл бұрын
Thank you! No, I don't believe it will work on a Cougar. The only reason I was able to do it to this one is because it was offered in the previous years and was still the same body. That particular Cougar never offered functional rear quarter windows.

Only original once.. I actually view an unmolested car more valuable than a restored one. I'm like you, I added alot of extras to my car it didn't come with but are correct for the car and year.

Hi Tony, your Mercury looks very good and I like it. I Hav a question about the steering wheel shifter on the most cars I have seen in videos from you and others, I wonder why they where so popular do you think? I like the floor shifters mor, and I know that you hav a car with this one. As usual a nice video Tony.👍
@tonyscarcare5657 Жыл бұрын
Thank you once again! Column shifts were just what they did. Floor shifts made it into sporty cars for people without family and kids where the room for seating didn't matter as much.
