@mortske what you were mentioning about what ford calls the main caps down deep in the motor it is called a deep skirted block. Figures leave it to ford to put a skirt on there engines. Take that ford manly man's your engines have a skirt

Actually, skirted blocks tend to be way stronger and more robust than a non skirted block. This is why Chevy engines need stud girtlesto get the same rigidity as a skirted block. Consider that most diesel engines have skirted blocks.

my first and last "why block" swapped out a worn out 292 for an older but supposedly fresher 272 didn't have the right fittings to connect the oil pressure gage, so figured...lets take a chance, long story short, engine ran great...then a light squealing, then loud squealing...finally with throttle wide open the y-block seized...slammed hood and walked away, this was 1966,....55 yrs later folks are still giving up on these engines, anyhow, a spectacular flash from that old 292....a fitting send off indeed!

Congrats on reaching the the 25K mark. I subscribe to a number of automotive channels. My favorites all have content similar to yours. Just guys screwing around in the garage doing fun stuff. Sometimes you/they make something cool as heck, sometimes it's the waste of time olympics. Just wrenching on cool stuff, getting dirty, learning and hopefully making noise when it's all said and done. No frills, no fancy camera work, no big sponsors, no big egos. They re all guys like Vice Grip Garage, Jonathan W, Mustie 1, Cold War Motors, Elderly Iron, etc., you're in pretty darn good company I'd say. Of course a 4 legged sidekick always gets extra points from me, The Duff is awesome. Keep it up. buddy!

I'd have taken a ridge reamer to it. and yes I've done it on a seriously worn sbc. honed it. reringed it. changed out the beatings. and before I lifted the heads off of it I'd have pressurized each cylinder with air and listened to exhaust and intake ports for noise past the valves. lapped any leaky valves. and run it. into the IHC scout for sure. it doesn't have to run perfect. but it is gratifying to get an engne back from the dead to the point it starts easily and runs just fine. the one I did like that did have a bit of blowby but not a lot. ran pretty good tat way for a number of years. took it apart because of a problem that I panicked over. didn't need to. just an intake that lost its seal at a water port. and yes, that ridge reamer is key to removing pistons past a ridge. and ya, the onam had 159 hours on it as I recall.

Thanks for the update. Not sure I would melt that block at this point. Might clean it up and make a coffee table out of it without welding to it. The 292 might not seem all important now but they will become if not rare now more so in the future and someone is going to be willing to bring it back to life. Finite quantities of an oddball engine is the way I look at it. Thanks for the end game diagnosis and for all the hard work you put into your videos!

Also glad you took the time to disassemble the Y-block, my Dad worked for ford in the early to mid 60's building engines and I helped him build more than a few ford FE's and small blocks when I was young, but have never even seen a Y-block in person.
@DavidSmith-fs4nt
@DavidSmith-fs4nt 3 жыл бұрын
That Y block was designed in 1953 and was considered decent technology for its day since it replaced the flathead. My dad bought a 55 Ford wagon new with the 292 and took the family cross country on a trip to Grand Canyon. In 57 he got a new Mercury Turnpike Cruiser with the 312. He said it would pass everything but a gas station. Back then gas was 21 cents a gallon. He also had a 57 Ford panel truck which was a 2 door wagon with no glass windows in back except tailgate. Pretty sure it had the 292. He used to trailer a boat with it. Never had any problems with these motors. When the Merc had a 125k on it my dad overhauled it himself and kept it another 5 years. So these motors were pretty good in their day and eventually got replaced with better technology .

Well done on the 25000 subs, it is well deserved, keep on like this and it'll be 200k by Christmas! 159.6 hours on that generator, it is probably less now after that jump!!

I'd tune it up, replace the radiator so its heavy duty, replace the glass and windshield, install a new dash and door panels, upgrade the HVAC so you get hot heat and decent A/C, put some heavy duty bumpers and maybe a plow assembly on it with a 4WD conversion and good blackwall meats and use it as a plow truck..........

The last Y-block I saw was in a 1958 Ford truck that my brother bought as a parts truck. It didn't run either and the truck was a rust bucket. He got what parts he could off it then used the bed as a dumpster for the trash. 😄 The only really good part was the rear 3/4 ton axle....the kind with the big hubs. It was whatever they called the "Super Duty" back then. F250??? Keep up the content! Love the channel!

Ford rods were numbered from the factory.... also Ford standard pistons are color coded.... I think red is standard, blue is .003 over and no paint is .005 oversize.... they were all referred to as "standard size" by Ford and were not for sale retail. The paint would be on the piston top, yes combustion side. Upon cleaning them carefully, you can often still see paint color with a very close look. Ford also wrote the overbore size in yellow paint in the lifter Valley on V block engines, and under the manifolds on inline engines.... that way the engine got the correct size piston for the bore. I the early 80's Ford put there smallest standard pistons (red paint) in the 300 sixes in trucks and vans. There were tons of complaints of a cold engine knock. It got to where I could change pistons in a truck in three hours, often doing two trucks a day. Over-bores are common in the auto industry. At that time I worked as a mechanic in the largest Ford dealer in the country. Most required only one or two pistons being replaced, because someone wasn't doing there job correctly on the engine assembly line.
