Guys you have no reason to over explain asking for a deal. You rock. You are in business and so is the op shop. I think people lose sight of that. Keep on killing it.

We accept offers - discounts on the listed price in our ebay stores. Most op shops are corporate businesses that can definitely afford to look at discounts. Like you guys, we 99% of the time pay the ticket price. But for a higher priced item, it doesn’t hurt to ask🤷♀️. Like you said, manners and attitude make a difference.
@2AussieThrifters7 ай бұрын
Absolutely agree Shelley as long as you are approaching it with no expectations and like you mentioned show manners.

I think the main thing is to always be respectful. If an item is sitting there for a long time, it is damaged or your purchasing in bulk, there's always the chance a discount could be given. Just keep it friendly and respectful. Great topic and some really good thoughts on it mate!

you should ask for a discount. Op shops are not businesses, the are schemes funded by charities that Job Active and Employment services use such Schemes to return people to work, these NGO's are subsidized and aren't charged Taxes for providing job opportunities. 9 times out of ten the people assisting are Returning or just starting employment to get experience to move onto other employment and get a unemployment Pension/Wage for working until they find stable employment. The prices have become crazy because vintage clothing became on trend or fashionable. Ask for a discount and don't feel bad about it
@2AussieThrifters7 ай бұрын
Yes it’s an interesting conversation, we love the work op shops do in our community and if we can spend more money with them then we absolutely want to. As mentioned it isn’t something we do regularly but I think there are times and places where a polite conversation can help both sides.

As someone who has volunteered at op shops in the past to gain work experience, I can in fact tell you in most cases they are happy to give discounts on bundles and if your a regular. I volunteered at Vinnies and my manager was a legend and would always give discounts to people who had purchased a lot, was a regular or was just super nice when they asked for discounts. I’m not sure about other op shops but I know with Vinnies we always had to ask the manager if that’s okay to give discounts and in most cases the Volunteer doesn’t know that discounts can be done, they can’t be bothered to ask the manager or the manager isn’t in store.
@2AussieThrifters7 ай бұрын
That’s an interesting insight from someone who has been on the other side of it thanks for sharing, I think as long as you are being respectful to all people involved it shouldn’t be an issue. If you can pay the price of the tag then go ahead and pay it. But it doesn’t hurt to ask.
@Kelake637 ай бұрын
I go to my local op shops often enough to know what has been sitting for months. If I offer a lower price, it moves their stock. I also respect their right to say no. That, to me, is a win/win.
@2AussieThrifters7 ай бұрын
Yea nice I think when you are a regular and they can see you buying regularly they are definitely more inclined to make those types of deals.
@fionacalcino64167 ай бұрын
Love this video 😊 I worked at Lifeline for 11 years and you are right it is all about how you ask. Too many people demand and would then get all uppity when we said no. Also it is generally not up to the individual staff member. Depending on the shop/chains policy even the shop manager can't change prices, especially on all the new items stocked now because they have been bought and gst paid etc
@2AussieThrifters7 ай бұрын
Wow 11 years that’s a good stint, yea absolutely agree, we should expect anything as buyers and be prepared to move on if we can’t make a deal. Most cases we wouldn’t even ask.

Just like most things you usually make your money when you buy. I will pick some items up and ask if there's a better price, if they cant cool, I put the item back... Sometimes they do sometimes they don't. Always be polite no matter the outcome.

I live in what is now a quite upmarket country town in Victoria, Aus, and the local Salvos thinks it is Toorak...they price things way too high, and then when they dont sell in the time they have allotted, on the $2 rack they go. I have found many items on there they have tried unsuccessfully to charge $55 and above for. I only shop on that $2 rack from them. The Salvos from the next town along sold a print I had donated to them for $150. I see nothing wrong with asking for a discount if I see a way that I think would be fair to do: they certainly think nothing of extracting every dollar from us they can. The smaller opshops, who really are putting every dollar back into the local communities often offer some off anyway if you are buying lots. They appreciate making the sale and moving out their goods.
@2AussieThrifters7 ай бұрын
Yea I have seen a few of the up market ones charging up which is fine if they can get that money, I think most op shops aren’t going to command those higher prices as the person looking for that item at that price would have to walk into that particular store. I have seen some of the smaller op shops doing great things locally so we try to support them where we can by buying there regularly.
@MrSaddie1237 ай бұрын
I don't see the issue at all they probably got the items for free and here in the states it doesn't take much to call yourself a charity in fact many people over here use them as covers for tax protection or cheap inventory (not all some are good). Always enjoy thanks friends!
@2AussieThrifters7 ай бұрын
Yea fair call, I mean they do have their overheads as well but I think if you can find that happy medium that works for both parties no harm to ask.

op shops (Vinnies / salvos etc) get most of there items donated free, They're there mainly to support people that need some cheap clothing etc. I had seen a pair of Dr martens the other day in a Vinnies for $120. At what point are they turning it into a passive profiting thing for themselves over helping out less fortunate people in the community. I don't hesitate to ask for a discount if something is priced high because whatever they get for it will still be 100% profit for them and I spend more than your average person in Op shops already anyway.
@2AussieThrifters7 ай бұрын
Yea it’s a interesting discussion for sure. There are definitely occasions where things feel overpriced, and some times well underpriced thinks it is a fine balance of supporting their causes but also making it affordable.

@bekscho6 ай бұрын
Ive spoken to and overheard over the last 40 years of being an op shopper, many op shop servers complain about having no say and the prices they are charging are ludicrous, as they have separate people or salaried managers that price the donations and they can see the majority of customers struggling and not being able to afford even second hand heavily used items anymore. Plus a huge chunk of your purchase money goes to the corporate side of the charity, not to needy causes or the volunteers. Plus Savers in Australia is not a charity they are a buiness that donates a tiny percentage of their takings to charity but they market themselves as one and all their stock doesnt cost them a penny and they have the highest prices, so if I want to feel charitable I prefer to give my money directly to the people and organisations that need it and use it for what I'd like it to be used for.

Last time I asked for a price was on a Susie Cooper teapot. There were a couple of cups, saucers, b&b plates there as well, and I asked for a price on the lot. (Then I noticed damage to the teapot . . . ) The op shop that I go to regularly - only one in my town that I like - offers me a price, not the other way round, the quirkier the item, the bigger the discount!

I have asked before. I word it by asking are they negotiable on the price. The op shops can either say yes or no. Sometimes I’ve asked as I feel it is slightly priced on the higher side for a second hand item or if it is damaged.
@2AussieThrifters7 ай бұрын
Yea that’s fair, I think it’s more about how you ask and being respectful of their positions as well.
@webapple17 ай бұрын
In this market , I don’t think it’s a big deal asking for a discount, they got the item for free , business is always a negotiation - most businesses will ask for discounts when buying their stock . And so personal or business - asking for a discount for an item they got for free - not a big deal , haters gunna hate - if we were talking about prices from a few years ago where that jacket would have been $5 … asking for a discount might have been a bit tacky
@2AussieThrifters7 ай бұрын
Yea I think your spot on asking on a fair priced item is probably a different story all together. Appreciate your input 🙏
@loz67957 ай бұрын
I don’t think there is anything wrong with asking an op shop if they can do a better price. Especially considering you guys visit and purchase on a regular basis. And let’s face it depending who actually prices some of the items they can be a little high for an op shop. Yes they want to help their charity but they are also there to help ppl who can’t afford new things at times so the pricing should reflect that even though there are resellers buying from there too. Good job guys on the deal from Angus. Looks like you got some awesome stuff. Can’t wait for the next video. I’m intrigued 🤔. Have a great and prosperous weekend. Happy thrifting 😊👋

Here's the reality. Major chain Charity shops like the Salvo's, Vinnies, Savers ect are for profit corporate structures. Yes they do a lot of good work for the local communities and the needy, but they run on a corporate style structure none the less. The other big thing to remember, is like any other eBay seller, the 2AussieThrifters are running a business and they're job as small business owners is to make money. Don't hate on the players, by all means hate the game, but that's how business goes sometimes, full stop end of story.
