HEY RYAN YOU SAVED ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Long story but I took my 454 to shop A in late feb. 2 to 3 weeks they said. 3 months later they still had not finished it so I pulled it and took to shop B. shop B found that the crank mains had not been ground, just polished, the valve seats had been ground wrong. when I cleaned the block I found the rear cam bearing had two scratches, shop A had installed them. couple of weeks ago I went to install the cam and it wont go into the rear bearing. So I took it to shop B and he replaced two of the brand new bearings I get it back and this is where you saved me! I checked the bearing orientation and the rear bearing was not aligned with the oil passage! I have built engines before but never thought to check this! So thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well WD 40 definitely repels water but it does not keep your iron from rusting long-term so it has its application, here's a good test spray cast iron with WD-40 and then try JB blaster put your hands on the surface of the as well as the JV blaster you will see which one will rust because moisture got into the weaker oil.

I’m more concerned with the abrasive cutting tool remnants than micro metal. That abrasive grit will cause failure even if no metal is present. I use a lot of mineral spirits and engine brushes to run the the oil galleries to get any stuck dried on debris completely out. You have to mechanically agitate every internal surface to be sure it’s all out. Nice series so far. 👍

Thanks for these videos. I have been using them for my 454 build with ARF 265s. I had a cam ground to make it a low end grunter. It's in my 36' RV. The stock 454 is about 200-235HP. I thin the new build will do a little better job pulling a 20Klb RV up a mountain. Well, at least be capable of. Not doing any bottom end work except oil pump. The block only has 44k on it. Cam got swapped today! assembly begins!

@bender49ers amazing! it pulls 22klb over the continental divide (look up Loveland pass) 4 times. overheating is an issue on long pulls. I am adding a jeep xj radiator to it this week along with a large oil cooler. it has the resonator in the exhaust only. so pretty much a straight pipe. it sounds amazing. a streetrod engine along with all the sounds in am rv is kinda awesome

@@bender49ers oh, it actually ended up being a double build. I lost oil flow but had over 150psi. tore it down and had bearing soup. so I quickly sourced a new block (rvs have 454s) and did a full rebuild. it was fun swapping the engines. but the basic swap took about 4 hours.

Good video. Make sure you blow out and spray WD40 in your oil passages as well since water could easily pool in there and take a long time to evaporate.

When sending the engine to the machine shop, what do you 'order'? Check the engine, measure the engine? Thanks for infos on that

Basically you ask "What's this engine going to clean up at? Can you magnaflux it? Is it a good block?" Then they test it and see how big the bore needs to be to clean up at. Thanks for watching!

wd40 is the wrong thing to use as it has silicone in it (iron is porous) . Primer/Paint doesn't adhere well on a silicone coated surface. 1st-wash with pressure washer/ scrub brush. Use compressor and high pressure air nozzle to blow off all water quickly. 2nd- use Acetone to wipe down all surfaces of the block (acetone stops rust flash and is an excellent de- greaser used prior to painting metal surfaces). 3rd- tape and paper off all surfaces of the block that you do not wish to be painted and Spray Paint engine block with self/metal etching engine block primer. (Wait 20-30 minutes at 65-70 degrees)( Remember different paints dry at different rates). 4th- When primer is "very tacky" (test with gloved finger on taped area), Spray Paint engine block with manufacturers correct year /date code engine block color (or custom color). In your case Chevrolet orange. This protects the outside of the block from rust. There are also specialty paints for the inside of the block that also promote better oil drain back to the pan. 6th-After your paint has "set" and is dry to the touch, carefully remove painters tape/paper, chase all bolt hole threads, and coat threads / and all other non-painted surfaces with a light coating of oil to protect those un -painted surfaces from rusting.

I used carb spray and mineral spirits to clean the block before painting. We have been running the big block for awhile now and have experienced no issues with the enamel. That is good stuff. Thanks for watching!
