i know exactly how ppl living like this get their mail, they sign up for a mail forwarding service! i work at one, we get our client's mail sent to us then either scan it and email it to them or send it to wherever theyre about to dock. most of our clients are retired on cruises all the time

The reason cruises can be so cheap is that they hire workers from the Philippines and Indonesia. Since they are in international waters, they don't have to pay them US minimum wage rates.

I can see this becoming a movie plot. Thirty couples ranging from just retired to nearly 💀 decide to live out their golden years on a cruise ship. But the cruise ship goes off course. They run into pirates, who ravage the vessel for anything they can eat. The cruise-goers band together to learn how to fish, and become quite good at it. But not everyone wants to work for food. This was supposed to be their retirement. They begin to turn on one another. As time goes on, people begin 💀 ing, one by one. Nobody knows what- or who- is causing the disappearances…

The "problem" with it being comparitively cheap is that it's difficult to work. So it's only really feasible if you can make all your money online and that job (whatever it is) allows you to not have your own permanent space. It will be interesting to see if more digital entrepreneurs do this and if that then drives the price up.

To explain why cruises are cheaper than a lot of land based living options; 1. The same company controls everything on board and buys all the stuff in bulk. 2. The staff is payed terribly. 3. They do not offer the kind of medical care you would expect in a nursing home. Living on a cruise ship really only makes financial sense when compared to assisted living, (where old people get non medical assistance with their day to day lives) or to constantly traveling around as a digital nomad (someone who works online and roams the world since their job isn’t tied to a location.) Otherwise, you will probably run into problems.

I got to live in cities that were way above my price range. maintaining it was constant but satisfying and… it was a totally different experience than living in a floating strip mall. But, there is some universal feeling of internal peace one gets when looking at a piece of land and saying good bye to it and all the good and bad that it contains.

It is kind of interesting. It's basically a senior home where the staff treat you like royalty because you're a rare familiar, family like face, like a regular friendly grandma at the casino or something. Better care than a senior home, sadly... On top, the faces keep changing! You can live in your personal fantasy for ever, nothing remains, nothing is remembered or built upon, it's almost like you don't... exist.... anymore.. but don't have to worry about life at all, expectations, meetings with family, the myriad of individual tasks you now how to complete by yourself, and exist. Basically you don't exist but you can live the same day over and over like a child with parents.

retiring on a cruise ship is actually so smart you get to travel and live your life and you spend the same amount you would on a retirement home as long as you can do things by yourself still of course

The pricing makes no sense. We went on a cruise and 1 week for one of the smaller rooms was nearly 8,000 bucks for the week.

as someone who was working for a cruise company for quite some time (in the office on land, though, selling cruises) - cruises are mainly for old people. Thats not a new concept, it's the MAIN concept. Other cruises (disney, singles, and so on) come second, when it comes to clientel. In the sales team we were asked to offer cruises to younger people with kids, young families etc, because the company wanted to widen their range in potential clients

Okay but whys Mama Lee the most grandma grandma I've ever heard of. Shes like my grandma. Maybe that's just my grandma. I'm a nanny and I talk to her about it and she gives decent advice but she's also 77 and had 14 kids only like 7 or 8 of them are still alive. She's got great grandkids too. She often says exactly what Mama Lee said "babies are great but then they grow up" and it's funny cuz I'm a nanny because I wanna see and help that growing up. Like maybe that's just a grandma with a shit ton of grand babies thing.

This is the exact demographic cruises are after. I worked in the cruise industry for almost 5 years, everything on board is catered for passengers to not really leave "cruise life" and spent as much as possible while on board. From drinks to excursions ashore.

I think the reason that most people don't live on cruiseships even if the rent is comparable is that you can't keep most jobs while on a cruise ship, so you need to have a large amount saved, like a pension, or a really good remote work job

anyone who has gone on a cruise would know the food is disgusting, the rooms are tiny, and most of the time is spent on the open ocean where you just see water. Also everything is curated by the cruise company and are designed to get you to keep spending money.

As someone with a water phobia, this is literally the worst place I think someone could ever live lol, but aside from that, it would make me so sad to live in a tiny room where you could never just go for a run outside or take your dog to the park or visit your favorite restaurant. Obviously different strokes for different folks, but I feel like I value the nature around me so much where I live and have built so many memories at certain places, I think it would be so hard to replicate that on a cruise ship with a bunch of other people.
