However for me being a driver great for getting in and out of car, truck, apc. In my personal opinion and observation, having friends in Australian army. i would say the reason for the Australian SAS ect using AR Style Rifles is due to these Rifles beeing the "Barbie" of Rifles ->The available accessories to put on is unrivaled. And those guys have a much bigger need and ability to use and customize mounted accessories than normal soldiers. Also i think the Australian factory producing the FA88 for their armed forces (Lithgow?) never produced any AUG variant with rails. The Austrian Army and Police special units use different variants of AUGs with rails and accessorie mounts. (also 9mm variants in some cases) They get theirs from Steyr... The mag change: i think that is mainly a "beeing used to" issue: if the first rifle you are trained with is a Bullpub, you automatically reach for the mag behind the pistol grip while if you are used to a "traditional" rifle you may find that awkward. Same for mag release...

@@nirfz well the SAS guys I know say is more about the handling and speed of use, I seen pimped out AUG as well. I do agree comes down to training and experience, however some who were trained on the AUG and don't forget that is the main weapon till the they change years later, when they become members of SAS etc. The main reason Australia uses the AUG is because all are mobile and the experiences with the FN shown some issues with a very long rifle. 3-9 o'clock bipods do exist, and they can be mounted on the MDR, but they they can interfere with the charging handle.
@FinalWarrior5915 жыл бұрын
Side-mount bipods exist (UTG Recon Flex, comes in two sizes (5.7"-8" and 8"-11.8"); VLTOR also makes a set), over-bore bipods also exist (again, UTG makes one, as do other manufacturers). The issue with the UTG Recon Flex is that if you stow the bipod legs forward they'll be past the muzzle (with the standard/factory flash hider), necessitating something like a flash can or a suppressor to avoid potential damage to the bipod legs; if you stow them backwards, they'll interfere with the charging handles. Over- or under-bore bipods that can stow backwards (e.g. Atlas bipods) are probably ideal for the MDR, assuming you don't want to modify the firearm itself (e.g. with the DT suppressor-length overmolded handguard, or the upcoming Lucky Irishman aftermarket handguards).

But a lot of guys liked the foregrips with the little bipods that are a bit plasticity, but better than nothing. It seems odd to go for 16" it looks like the MDR would be better at 17.5 with a longer hand grip that should mount a bipod more easily. It will also balance it a lot better pushing the CG up an inch or two. Although it would be interesting to see if adding a can would fix the balance. Would be interesting to see if you could have them make you a new longer handguard as a prototype.
@masqueofhastur5 жыл бұрын
16" is the minimum non-tax stamp length, and the point of a bullpup is to make the overall length shorter. The standard X95 used by the IDF now appears to be the 13" barrel model, so when they're not concerned with legal limits, they go even shorter to optimise the advantage of the platform.
@smck97985 жыл бұрын
@@masqueofhastur the IDF do other countries don't, depends if you want short as possible absolutely or short as possible while having a full length barrel. The small drop in terminal ballistics from the shorter barrel isn't always considered worth it. And from a shooters perspective it can make some difference as you go from harassing fire at 600 yards to I can actually hit something. It was one of the few redeeming qualities of even the early L85s before they fixed them that you could be accurate at range thanks to it having the optic before its time. It's likely the tax stamp thing. Frankly from an old hand bullpup user too short is definitely a thing. Personally I would want the longer barrel, but I'm a recovering long range shooter.

@nirfz5 жыл бұрын
while i support that i think the AUG would fare less good because both Ian and Karl mentioned "weird ergonomics" which means they are used to the controls of the AR so that anything that has different controls seems weird and maybe even unergonomic to them. But often there are the reasons why some things are the way they are: the big Triger guard on the AUG for example is helpfull in very cold temperatures in winter with really thick gloves. Also the MAG release: if the rifle got warmed up and then put into the cold again the condensed water freezes and then good luck with the small button of an AR (there was a video on that from Military arms channel years ago), the AUG butten is bigger and provides more leverage if need be.

Peaking out of corners with the weapon raised is a major advantage. Peak, take a shot and go back in before the other guy shoots you. If you are peaking out of a doorway, having a gun longer than a doorway width while shouldered automatically negates this ability. "That's why they make 8inch ARs." Except than you get out of the building, engaged from 300m and can't do shit, while with a bullpup you still have a 16in to shoot accurate.

I feel like the intended goal of a bullpup is to bridge the gap between a general purpose rifle and an SMG. I think the FAMAS illustrates that it really can achieve that pretty well. However, I think it only works if you think your combat ranges will be mostly biased close but with occasional far stuff. If it was only far, you'd just take a standard AR because the increase on OAL is no harm to you. If it was only close range you could take a 300 BLK AR with a very short barrel for subsonics which won't give anything up in size but has a lot more going for it if you're fighting through rooms. Although I really love bullpups, its special zone where it's the best solution is really thin. Existent, but thin.

You are better off looking at a Tavor or AUG which cuts the difference between the RDB and MDR. While they aren't as ambi as the other options, they are better quality than the RDB and aren't as jumpy with recoil as the MDR. They are also proven guns with a solid track record.

I've got to be honest, I would take an L85A2 or A3 over the MDR. I don't care the it has better ergonomics, I don't care that it is lighter (only by a hair though), I don't care that it is ambidextrous, the magic that has to happen to get that case flying forwards out of that ejector chute is always going to be a massive downside to me as I simply wouldn't trust it both in terms of function and in terms of being able to inspect and access the chamber. If they made replacement side plates to turn this into a more conventionally ejecting non ambidextrous (but switchable) rifle that would actually be a lot more attractive to me. I fully accept that my opinion is probably wrong and the ejection is reasonably reliable, but I am old school and just don't want to have to worry about it.

Q: if you compare the $2500 Desert Tech MDR to a quality $1500 AR from BCM or even a $400-$600 do-it-yourself build... is it WORTH it? I'm not sure I want to pay an extra $1000 for second kind of cool. I don't see myself jumping out of an APC or assaulting something from a car anytime soon. As for amibidexterity... the MDR is, but I'm not. Trim a cool $1k off that sticker price and it's a lot more attractive.
@leonardolopez96595 жыл бұрын
hey, guys idk if y'all read KZbin comments but on the topic of the bipod, would a slightly longer handguard allow you to attach a bipod using the m-lock cuts on the gun? say a 20in barrel w an appropriate length guard? would that also move the center of balance forward? I don't really know much about guns but I'd like to hear your thoughts on this thx
@BenjaminGierisch5 жыл бұрын
That would defeat the point of having the shorter bullpup though. Would it not? Realistically, like a FAMAS, you can put the bipod on the sides or even get a top mount.
@leonardolopez96595 жыл бұрын
@@BenjaminGierisch yeah but a bullpup 20" is still shorter than a conventional 20". the question still remains would having a longer fore end balance the system out? would it solve some of the issues with it and possibly help it compete against say the wwsd carbine or other popular contemporaries? bc from what understood from the video was that there were issues with the balance point being rear of the pistol grip and the lack of rail space. also it's be cool to see these guys design a perfect bullpup at least on paper. @AverageJoe40635 жыл бұрын
So all Desert Tech needs to do to make this gun perfect is put in a geissele trigger, offer a bipod option (like a foregrip with integrated bipod), lighten up the back end a bit, and make it military trials (or even better Gauntlet) reliable.

I like the idea of a bullpup very much, I would by one if it was to be legal in my country. On the other note 308 vs 223, which is better overall, which could be more usefull in the future to the regular armies, do you guys have a video on it cuz i didnt find one and Im really interested in your opinion.
@GhostlyTurtle5 жыл бұрын
Some of their older videos they talk about intermediate cartriges (5.56, 5.45, etc) vs. full rifle cartridges (7.62x51, x54r, etc.). They even ran a match where Ian had I think a G3 clone and Karl I think had a 5.45 AK. Ian only needed one hit per target where Karl needed multiple. I'm fairly certain they would agree that intermediate are the best for general purpose where larger cartridges are better if you have a special need like shooting big game, at extreme ranges, or through something solid.

Bullpup discussion point: does a bullpup take a significant toll on the strong arm after carrying it for a long hike/fight vs a more center balanced Ar/ak, whose weight is distributed among two arms?
@nirfz5 жыл бұрын
it is called the strong arm isn't it? Joke aside, i haven't done any army training with a "traditional" style rifle, but i don't remember any problem with the "strong" arm. My question would be which one can you hold in aim for longer standing wihtout support? (The one where the weight is closer to your body or the one where the weight if further out. leverage matters) With the AUG i was able to keep both elbows to my chest while holding the rifle which is more stable than a traditional layout would allow in an unsupported stand) During marching you would sling it on anyway, so no difference there. (As long as the over all weight difference isn't that big... The AUG i was issued had 4kg fully loaded and 3.6 empty, i think that isn't far off an actual M16 while beeing way more compact and the MDR being havier i think.)
@kniter015 жыл бұрын
Rearward weight is actually easier to carry for long periods of time From my experience bullpups are more comfortable in extended periods since the weight is distributed into your shoulder as well, not just your arms
@searinggravy70475 жыл бұрын
while firing your body is supporting most of the weight. Pretty much a little easier with a bullpup/ the same
@jp_05 жыл бұрын
I would like to add another point , related: current doctrine for advanced rifleman training is to "steer" the rifle with the weak arm and use the controls with the then stress-free strong arm. Any strain on the second would affect trigger pull. In this case, after some time just handling the weight with the strong arm, the hand is supposed to be less than fresh for a trigger pull. (PS: bullpup advocate here)

@@DrWolfensteinz So they don't have a less beefy version for just the 5.56?
@DrWolfensteinz5 жыл бұрын
@@Shieldsz No, one of DT's selling points for the MDR was caliber changing between a .308 to a 5.56 (Including calibers that fit both with barrel swaps at minimum), so while the .308 might not be too ridiculous weight wise, swapping to the 5.56 really has no real advantage compared to other bullpups outside of the ambi nature.

So, I thought of something you didn't bring up about bullpups. As a stout little man (around 5'6'' or 1m69), I like bullpups because they're compact while retaining a decent sized barrel. And let's face it, I have shorter arms than the average American. :) Would you say bullpups are a valid choice for us folks of the shorter persuasion ?
@EDSKaR5 жыл бұрын
generally stock length is always within the same range, regardless of bullpup or not. (Actually the SA80 has a very long lop because it's... designed weird...) a lot of the time, however, bullpups don't have any way to adjust the lop, so I would highly recommend you try to hold one before you buy one. At least look up the lop and compare it to your arm length.
