I'm a Canadian who spent 5 years living in eastern Ukraine. DDT is my favourite band. Shevchuk is a poet and a philosopher. His lyrics are deep and thought provoking. He can say so much in just a few words. A couple of examples: "Water drops on my face. It's just the rain, or maybe, it is me crying." "I wouldn't know how to live if death suddenly wasn't possible."

Yury is not just a legendary musician, but a great poet as well. DDT's lyrics have always been very deep and poetic sonce the middle of the 80's. If I am not mistaken, he had even a book of his poetry, maybe even not one.

I recollect middle and late 80's, how crisp and mindful the lyrics were, I still remember most of them by heart - "Revolution", "Time", "Church", "Don't shoot", "Rain" - this one is actually from the early 80s, people will be recommending the latter a lot. And many more. As I said, I still remember all these lyrics by heart. It's a huge pity that you can hardly find a proper translation though. From what I have come across I can't really be satisfied to a decent level of meaning conveying work.

@@vadimspavinskis7704 A lot of songs from the mid-90's will be recommended the most (and they are great albums). Some of the early 80's albums were rough around the edges, but given how underground that era of Soviet rock was, it is understandable. But once you get to the albums Ya poluchil etu rol', Ottepel' and Plastun, amazing albums. I'm also fond of Mir nomer nol'. There are also a lot of apartment concerts, if you can find them, from the early years with a bard-like quality. As for translation, I'm not sure it is possible. I'm not a native speaker, so I can't claim to have a perfect understanding. You get the basic meaning through translation and then you have to try to absorb the nuances holistically.

Thank you very much for your attention to DDT songs, especially to their ballads. These are those songs my generation was singing by guitar through the night till sunrise sitting around bonfire. Also just google it - Yuri Schevtschuk in Groznij 1995. You'll see videos of him playing his song for wounded russian soldiers right on frontline in dirt, ash and blood. Please keep on moving, try "Osenniaja" (autumn song), "Rozschdestvo" (Christmas), "Svoboda" (Freedom), "Gde mi letim" (where we are flying). Thanks a lot in advance!!!
