2:06 I attend the Swedish rally annually, and i will give my experiences with attending a rally event. You wake up early (me not so much since i live only an hour away or so from the service park) and get in the car. You turn on the radio and listen to the "rally radio" about what is happening during the day and the past days, combined with "rally mood music". No rally is complete without your friends and/or family, so make sure to bring them along. If you are lucky it is sunny outside. Värmland during winter is absolutely beautiful, so just the roadtrip up north is an experience in itself. Eventually you arrive at the spectator area. You pay, park your car and find a nice spot. You set up a campfire and wait for the event to start. Then you just stand or sit there and watch as the cars fly by. You eat grilled sausages, drink something nice (hot drinks and/or booze) and spend time with your company. In Sweden, spectator safety is a really big deal, so unless you are an absolute moron, there is really nothing to worry about. At the end of the rally you pack up your things, get back in the car and relax on the way back home. TLDR; It is not just about watching the cars for me, it's also about spending time with your friends and enjoying the outdoors. Amazing feeling that i recommend that everyone try given the chance.

This really reminded me of my grades and my anxiety over doing homework. I'm also a perfectionist in video games. I have to have the sneakiest, best, most efficient execution on an enemy, or I have to do things in a certain way to be happy. I also apply this to school work, but instead of getting my work done, I give up if I can't make progress (which, the perfectionism really hinders progress). You reminded me of my fear and anxiety about all the essays and projects I have to do before the end of the semester. But you also reassured me that I don't need to focus on making the beginning look beautiful, and that I'll eventually make _everything_ look like sparkling gold if I just work on the _entire_ project instead of just the first parts. This is a life lesson that I'm still struggling to learn, and this has helped me understand in a little bit of a different perspective

Honestly, I've beaten myself up so much over rally games, I remember doing very well in Colin McRae Rally and 2.0 there after. I got back into rally and racing, picked up a Logitech G29 wheel and well... I felt like a shadow of my former self and again beaten myself up to the point where I've uninstalled the game, given up and as odd/weird as it sounds I let it affect me pretty badly in all honesty. Watching this has actually helped with a bit of realization that I shouldn't give up because I can't do well, I can always improve and get better with practice. I know someone might read this and think "wtf is this guy babbling about, all this over a game?!" well, yes, I've dealt with a lot of things in my life and beating myself up over little things feels pretty routine for me. Games are an outlet and some have made me feel pretty crap as I'm competitive at heart. Re-reading this, I feel even better... thank you 2kliksphilip, not sure if this was the kind of reaction you were expecting, but thank you for your input. It's helped a guy get over feeling the need to beat himself up, at least in games.

Id pickup BeamNG if you want more casual fun with all the best driving physics (even crashing is fun) It even has a multiplayer mod, and mods out the ass. Tuning is by far the most complete I have seen. Or, you could get My Summer Car, "build" the shitsuma 6 times before looking up a guide, finally getting it right, and proceeding to total the thing 15 minutes in, while also being confined to jail for 8 IRL hours because some drunkard Finnish bastard crossed the road while you were going 120kph and tooting the horn... Fucking ell I hate and love that game
@tarcal877 жыл бұрын
Really nicely presented; the word choices, the flow, enjoyed watching it. Other tips in general (that helped me when I started all sorts of sim racing), everything comes with practice and as in Richard Burns Rally it was famously said: take it slow and improve over time, if you crash, you're going too fast... There is no point crashing and still keeping pushing. It means the person doesn't learn from your mistakes at all. It's so easy to be locked into this retry, retry, retry loop, happens to me sometimes, then I take a deep breath and calm down and I go smoother, slower, but much better times. With no experience and a keyboard, one shouldn't be brave enough to push 100%. One should not crash at all in the game, otherwise the person doesn't really take the game as realistic. - Feel that you are in an expensive rally car that you need to protect for your team (it's your own expensive machine, own parts, tools, equipment), the last thing you want is to scratch it! - Feel that you are a new, upcoming driver to whom there is no way in hell to be #1 for a long time (of practicing). It's ok to be way lower, anything better than Last is improvement. - Feel that there is no such thing as "restart". Forget that damned option.* - Feel that the game allows just a small fragment of insight into the driver's life, these 3-10 km stages are a fraction of real life 30+ km stages, so realize that if you can't even do this, you wouldn't stand a chance in the real thing. Just like in any sim, always go for stamina ("how long can I survive, 1 hour? half hour?"), NOT for attacking every turn like the 0.3 second advantage is worth risking turning over. Think like a real driver whose last dreaded dream is to crash in any manner. - Don't be afraid of letting off the gas pedal even on straights, the stages are bumpy and often a crash or mistake is about pushing 100% while on a bump... and just before a jump, truly let off. - Always focus on the racing line: the fastest path through a corner (outside->inside(apex)->outside), try to take the corner without skidding. At least in the beginning when you still crash once per stage. And then you can slowly learn how to control the car by sliding a bit more every time, just a tiny bit. - The biggest key to any real racing is *corner exit*. It is much more important to leave the corner as fast as possible than falling into the corner at high speed sideways finding yourself barely making it... it might look cool but is pointless. Corners are followed by straights (yay, trivia), so it's much more important to gain as much speed as possible as early as possible after a corner, any speed difference you can carry through will scale up through the straight. Imagine two cars leaving the corner, at 45 and at 50 km/h, as they speed up, the faster car keeps pulling ahead, the longer the straight the more. So if you are through the apex and you somehow need to let off the gas pedal, you're doing something wrong (also famously said by a race driver). So it's not intuitive probably, but always brake earlier, rather have just a few meters extra so that you ensure you can go full throttle out of the corner. This part, corner exit is really the key. I think someone who crashes so many times doesn't take it seriously whatsoever and approaches sim racing from the wrong angle. Real racing of any motorsport is always about perseverance and consistency, take tire use in most motorsports: drivers could always push harder but they always have to balance aggression (corner attack) with tires lasting as many laps as possible. So even real, professional, high stake racing is about pushing only 80-90% very often. So take this seriously. Keyboard (lack of a sim wheel) is not an excuse. Being new is not an excuse. Got to start slow, and build it up with experience. Think long term (stages, championships), not be bogged down with the current corner and the next one, being frustrated if it's not a perfect corner. *Do the first championship without restarting EVER, if you DNF in a stage, oh well. If you crash and the crowd pushes you back in losing you 15 sec, oh well. You'll learn from it, be all the more cautious. Hey you're going through the championship anyway, reaching whatever position. When you start the championship the second time, with the same car, you will be much better. And don't worry about money (that you could have gotten with higher position results), you want to practice on the same car after all so you won't spend much money anyway. Until you've practiced enough.

Philip, I recently bought this game after watching your video. I love the feel of driving in this game. You can easily feel the difference in each track's grip by your car's handling. A muddy road, a snowy paved road on a mountain and a paved road through the airfield all have very different handling and feel. When I first started playing CSGO, I would play deathmatch a lot to improve my aim. A race in this game feels very similar to a 10-minute deathmatch session. It challenges you to improve yourself. Also, the co-driver's instruction feels very natural, as if coming from a real human as opposed to merely recorded voice lines.

Hiya, here from a random KZbin recommendation, I’ve probably been recommended this channel before but just ignored it, this time the graphics of Dirt appealed to me for maybe 2 seconds as the video auto played in the home page so I decided to keep watching. (Great feature for attracting more viewers tbh) the reason I’m going out of my way to leave this comment on a 5 year old video is because of the following: this entire video is one of the most ideal examples of having someone obsess over a game to you so passionately that you wish to play it just to experience a similar passion. For context: I do not play racing games. I’m the exact type of perfectionist you describe yourself to have been and I don’t even often play singleplayer games because I mostly game for the sake of keeping in touch with friends. The closest thing to a racing game I’ve tried in recent history is probably a time trial in GTA online, very far removed from something like Dirt. I cannot describe how or why, but when you said that your narration probably sounds like random rambling to a non-player, I felt the complete opposite. I felt like I knew exactly what was being rambled. I don’t even play souls-like games either so I’m not familiar with the pain or reward of trial and error until success. In the off chance that you read this comment in full, bravo for accurately translating this raw emotion of passion and admiration into digestible English form. P.S.: that thing you describe about recognising a part of a track and “2 parts in your mind become 1” and suddenly you’re more comfortable/‘muscle memory kicks in’ unlocked some old memories, fun way to describe comfort zones. Reminds me of memorising music pieces on the piano.

Third person gives you an idea of what the back of the car is doing though, arguably the most important thing when racing. i find that that matters surprisingly little in most racing games when actually playing. focusing on what your back end is doing too much is a surefire way to lose track of what is going on in front of you. and there's very few instances, if any, where being able to see your back end will save you from a crash/other problem that you would have otherwise gotten into.

Perhaps look into getting a wheel. It will become a new challenge as you learn the intricacies of a new way of controlling your car. Especially with a manual shifter and clutch pedal, completely changed my experience of the game.

@matthewcopsey19947 жыл бұрын
Tarmac physics yeah, better in every way. But comparing apples and oranges, this game is very different and has mostly unexplored physic problems to overcome, which are arguably a lot more challenging then tarmac due to the variety of surfaces. If you want to compare AC to dirt rally, choose AC's rally stages, they blow.

This video got me to buy Dirt Rally. Oh boy, the first racing game _I actually liked!_ Speeding through the gravel feels so satisfying when it just works. About 60 hours of rallying with an Xbox One controller, I decided to buy a wheel, Logitech G27. Holy shit what a game changer, control and times began improving so much. About 280 hours of rally addiction later, decided to install the infamous Richard Burns Rally with mods. That if anything has made me totally lose myself into this, probably trying it irl at some point. So thanks for the awesome video, what a fun hobby I found out of this!

This is one of my favorite videos. Not just of you, but on whole youtube. I have it in my "favorites list since i first saw it, and every now and again, i watch it, because this is simply how it is. Its simply a joy to hurtl along loose and snowy roads, in game, and also outside of it, which this game promoted me to do for more then once. And your right: your dirty rally senses do kick in, kind of. This rivalry with your anonomous rivals is actually very intense, i lastly experienced this in the crew, with a guy, i never met, but we would allways beat our records. I sometimes stream dirt rally, but rarely so, but sometimes there is just the urge to challenge yourself on the crazy tracks of greece, or wales, or just take a easy but hard earned win in germany, until montecarlo comes along. I will allways go back to this video, and will smile, and get a little bit feeling of familiality and success of it. Thanks mate

I don't know why, but all the games that came after DiRT 2 just don't look as good as DiRT 2 to me... The damage models, the sun rays, the shadows... It doesn't look as polished. Honesty Gaming I disagree, I think the sounds and visuals of Dirt Rally are a massive improvement on any of the dirt games. Yes the crash physics are poor, but that's because they decided to spend more time on handling and driving physics, making it the best rally simulated on the market.

I don't know... I think perhaps DiRT 2's true looks are covered up by all the dust and dirt particles being kicked up when you drive. If this weren't the case, maybe the other DiRT games would look 10x better. It's a love/hate argument tbh. Some might say the particles are a good thing and are more realistic, others might say they're bad. It just depends on where you view it from. Either way my eyes still think that DiRT 2 looks better. I really try hard to squint and see the improvement but just can't for some reason... I might even go as far as saying that the newer games are a bit of a downgrade. But again, this does come down to personal preference...

I guess what Zerkath meant is, in the lowest difficulty tournament, if you pick the first category of cars (1960's), the AI doesn't pick the RWD (Rear Wheel Drive) car - the Alpine - but instead chooses one of the FWD (Front Wheel Drive) cars, which is considerably easier to control if you're a beginner.

With the first, the obsession with the first 30 seconds, the search for perfection, the fear of making a mistake on the last bit of the track and te acceptance of a not so perfect time.
