Gman: This is not your decision to make. You must not get in the way. I won't be giving you an answer (There is something else at the end, I don't know what he's saying though.) I think it is important to mention that the black scientist seen first at 3:03 and later at 3:38 is Dr. Eli Vance, father of Alyx Vance, the protagonist of HL:Alyx. Dr. Eli was an integral part of HL2 and its episodes. When the game HL1 was first made the scientists were generic, but were later retconned as having names, backgrounds and important roles in the story, like Eli and Isaac Kleiner. This is from the website combineoverwiki: "The African-American scientist model ("scientist03", or "Luther") was turned into the character Eli Vance for Half-Life 2. Eli is said to have lived at the Black Mesa Research Facility with his wife (Azian) and daughter (Alyx), although they are not seen or mentioned in Half-Life. Eli was retconned in Half-Life as being the scientist who sent Gordon for help right after the Resonance Cascade.[2] In Black Mesa East, Eli tells Gordon after meeting him again: "The last time I saw you, I sent you up for help after the Resonance Cascade. I never thought it would take you this long to get back to me!"" Not sure if you forgot about it or thought is was not relevant, even though its the father of the main character of the new game.

@Benjamin Except that it's tone deaf in level design, level cosmetics, and music.
@Yetoob8lWuxUQnpAahSqEpYkyZ4 жыл бұрын
@Benjamin The posters on walls and attempts at humor in them don't fit well with the overall theme and "darkness" of the game. The music, while good (although I feel it tells what to feel more than it shows an atmosphere and area/world), doesn't fit in with many areas and doesn't work when there's the aforementioned attempt at humor and gibbing behavior where a shotgun will explode an npc with no remnants other than a series of disconnected gibs. Black Mesa isn't supposed to be some place where the personnel would merit the the kind of drama and sadness that Black Mesa tries to invoke. The facility is supposed to be the result of incompetent oversight with an infinite budget and incompetent personnel. Trying to make me feel bad about this doesn't work. It especially doesn't when their incompetence is posted on all the walls. And yet, music plays that supposed to invoke some kind of feeling of regret or sadness in parts such as those. I also don't really get a sense of progression with Black Mesa's soundtrack, or at least in the facility. The reason why I think the music in Half-Life 1 works better is because it knows that it's an action game, it knows that the plot is somewhat ridiculous, and it's more industrial which I feel fits in with the aesthetic. I'm having a hard time remembering what exactly about actual level design (not the cosmetics of it) that I had a hard time with when I wrote the comment, but I think it's either poor contrast of action and drama or it's because the levels are bigger that there's less claustrophobia or space constraint that would build more suspense and better surprises around corners. By bigger levels, I don't mean less loading screens, I mean the size of the playable area.

I've been playing the game for the first time (basically. I played it for about 5 minutes in high school but not enough to get a feel for it). I wanted to thank you for making this video. There's a lot I missed, and a lot of behind the scenes stuff that add to the experience.

Like, I've played through 90% of the game twice now (thanks to me not understanding the saving system) and not once did I notice the scripted sequence of the scientist becoming a zombie, or the guard getting to the med kit.

Even though I've played this game countless times I'm still sitting here enjoying listen to you summarize it, you have this ability to make any subject fascinating.

These videos are good but I believe the HL: Alyx fans will need to know more about the story than the gameplay of HL1. Even after playing HL1 the story can be hard to understand without a video to help explain it.

Boy I really like this Idea of covering the Half-Life Storyline like this. I would really like to see more secrets and background information to be covert. Keep up the good work!

8:45 - you said you have to hop across a moving platform, did you know that you can stop the platform at the correct position making it a lot easier?

Great video. Pacing is perfect, it refreshed my memory of the game, and I really appreciate you pointing out some small random details and game mechanics I have not noticed before. It makes me appreciate the game all the more :)

Idk if it was the narration or the game, but something just pulled me in the video and I couldn't stop watching even if I wanted to. Brilliant editing.

Played hl1 lots of times but it was still fun watching you go through it at a quick pace. I wouldn't change anything.

Playing the game for my first time ever. I'm now in Chapter 17 and can't wait to start playing HL 2. Video is brief and entertaining. Keep it up.

This is precisely what I and I suppose what is a good chunk of other people needed. I don't like solo games, but HL is a phenomenon you can't miss on, especially now that the biggest prequel of the decade is coming out. I'll definitely watch HL alyx playthroughs (by you preferably) so having some background is ever more useful. The pace is maybe a bit too fast for me to fully appreciate it. Also the parts where you share your personal experience with the game and narrate the story a bit are great !

Despite playing all of them, I enjoy this video and would love to see it done for every HL (and perhaps portal) games as just a good refresher and learning new things I never knew about (like the sneaky blast pit tactic), well done, very enjoyable!

Really like the video Philip! It made me realize all the thing's I thought i remembered from this game and now I realize all I remember are those damn soldiers throwing grenades at me.

Thank you Philip for going through the game and giving us a summary. I have heard great things about hl but never had to chance to play. Since half life alyx is coming out being upated on the story helps alot! Would love to see more of this!

i think that the pace and narraring were spot on. Perfect for the viewer to see the surrounding area as you explain the situation. i'd be glad if you could mak more of these types of vids. :)
