I don't really agree about Doom 2016's "minimal cutscenes" over Eternal's. In Eternal, sure they're often told in the third person, and are separate from the gameplay, but that's not a bad thing at all. Because now you're able to skip them! Remember those couple moments in Doom 2016 where they force you into a small room to listen to Hayden spout on for five minutes? Those were easily the worst part of the game for me who replayed it multiple times and grinded on Ultra-Nightmare. Those HL2 style "immersive cutscenes" felt more out of place in Doom and infinitely more cumbersome than the skippable third person cutscenes of Eternal.
@dachhy9763 жыл бұрын
I agree, the new style/amount of cutscenes fit better in my opinion.

agreed! i really did like most of the cutscenes in 2016 in the first playthough (save for the aforementioned hayden lore dump) but grinding out UV runs suuucks
@KayvK3 жыл бұрын
I dunno, even with them being skippable, it goes against everything Doom originally stood for, which was "fuck the story, here's the game". And that's not to say that I enjoyed Doom 2016's cutscenes, I loathed them when I first played it, and I loathe them now.
@jamesabrams15053 жыл бұрын
Completely disagree. Doom 2016's cutscenes were never 5 minutes. They did have some unskippable sections, but DOOM 2016 was also a much more atmospheric game which fit the narrative. Doom Eternal's cutscenes are awful. They just are shot poorly and feel campy and cheap. Especially in the DLC. The original Doom didn't take itself super seriously, and didn't have cutscenes, so a lot has been based on Doom 3, which took on a more half-life style.
@Hypo_Thermic3 жыл бұрын
@@KayvK Absolutely none of the narrative is required for Eternal. Story was designed to be ignored, even the cutscenes (hence the change to skippable cinematics as opposed to HL2 immersive ones). This is very much like classic Doom which did in fact have a lot of story, but it was completely optional. Those end of episode text crawls, and the instruction manual. Not too different from the infrequent use of cinematics and optional codex entries.

As someone who's been playing Doom Eternal since day one and have seen quite a number of "reviews". I have to say this is a great review. You've covered alot of topics and you did not bash the game because certain mechanics were hard. You hit a road block, and instead of quitting and making a "review" where you rant about the game for +10 mins -- you learnt, adapted and "got gud" and were able to defeat the marauder and subsequently, the entire game. Alot of "reviewers" simply bash the game because they're incapable of defeating enemies who aren't bullet sponges. Enemies (like the Marauder) are needed in a game like this to keep the game interesting. If every enemy is a bullet sponge, then what's the point? Just make a shooting simulator. The Marauder is effectively a mini-boss and IMO, he has been used extremely well in the base campaign. Though it does need to be said that id software has failed quite hard in one aspect of Doom Eternal, which is arguably one of, if not, the most important aspect of Doom Eternal's combat which I'll be making a video on.

3:02 - 3:50 I think you really hit the nail on the head with the platforming segments. As amazing as the shooting is, and it is REALLY amazing, it would wear out fairly quickly of all of the levels were just shooting. They might feel tedious to a seasoned veteran who knows a thing or two about shooters, but for someone new to them as a whole the platforming segments do a really decent job at giving players time to catch their breath and get more comfortable with the dash and double-jump. I'm reminded of Egoraptor's Sequelitis video on Megaman X where he talked about how a new mechanic is isolated from almost all other parts of the game in order to let players get more comfortable with them and I think that's what ID was trying to accomplish by having platforming sections.
@Repose_3 жыл бұрын
Also 2016 never forced the story down your throat? Need I remind you the game literally had segments where you met hayden and had to listen to his exposition for the entirety of the cutscene with no way of skipping? Also if theyre a problem for you, you can skip them in eternal. As for the attitude of doom guy in eternal, it hasnt changed. Every encounter to someone new who sparks conversation with him are immediately dismissed through his desire to complete his mission or to enact combat. I mean he literally walks off from King Novik and gives him a scoffing look at him as he leaves in the second level who he was in service of during the crusade.

Doom: Eternal is the absolute peak of the FPS genre that I don't think will be topped anytime soon. I enjoy and agree with almost all design choices with the exception of certain checkpoint placements, the purple sludge, the tentacles, and the rather low mob density inbetween arenas. Initially hated the Marauder, but as I progressively got better at the game, I learned to appreciate him, started accepting those encounters as a sort of a wonderful death dance that you're thrown in with him, almost as a form of a reward after an easier encounter; there are videos on how you can quickly burst him down. The key to being good at the game are good aim, quick weapon-swapping, constant movement, and being aware of arena layouts and where demons are at all times in them. It's far from being a casual game, therefore I understand why some don't like it, but what I have no respect for is criticism for a game that it's evident simply wasn't made for certain types of gamers.

It was indeed a good game. On console, having to use all of the abilities and weapon mods was extremely cumbersome on a controller. I strongly disliked the Urdak level because it reminded me of halo 4 and as a result I got a migraine. Soundtrack was also fantastic when Mick Gordon was in charge. Marauders kinda slowed down arena fights because you can only kill it in one on one. Didn't care about the story and the longer the icon of sin is on earth, the stronger it becomes. Overall very good but for console I prefer Doom 2016.

I think these critics who say it's confused about what it wants to be don't realize that it actually hones more of the things that Doom 2016 started and make it clearer. The chainsaw was ALWAYS supposed to be for ammo, but in 2016, it was used for easy kills, but this was what the BFG was meant for. They removed the easy kill aspect of the chainsaw and replaced it with the Crucible.

SO GLAD to hear someone else echo my thoughts on the Maurader. I was mortified to read about how much it was hated once I had finished the game. I was honestly expecting it to be the highlight of most peoples experience for basically all of the reasons mentioned in this video - It starts off seemingly near-invulnerable and 'cheaty' the way it can instablock bullets and dash all over the place, but once you work out the mechanics more, both the game in general and the murders in particular, it becomes almost easy. the first fight with an M in that circular room becomes a bit of a joke on yourself when you revisit it - 'Did I really think THIS was hard, him all on his own like this?!'. And the fact that he starts as a boss and becomes just another enemy is literally classic doom: Barons of Hell started as the 'bruiser brothers' bosses on E1M8, but by chapter 2 they are just another enemy, same happened with Cyberdemons on E2M8! The Marauder joining that club was peak doom, and I actually remember yelling in glee when I saw my first 'normal' Marauder charging down the stairs at me along with the usual demons.

I was waiting for this review.. but I wasn't sure, it would happen. And here it is :) The marauder is like a symbol of how Doom Eternal works. He seems like an impossible obstacle, when you first encounter him. But as soon as you start to understand how he works, he becomes really easy. As I understand the game, there are a few hints to how this game should be played. Like the cacodemon, which are easy... as long, as you don't stand still and just shoot them. This is the game telling you, that you have to learn the enemies. The marauder is just the test, if you really learned to play. I don't mean the skillset, but the understanding of enemies and their composition with other enemies. There is so much depth in this game.. I'm still fascinated, after more than 500h

You can just feel how much effort he puts into his videos from every sentence here, btw that is the whole reason I subscribed at first, because I heard you talk about how much effort each one of your videos takes. If someone should be a full time youtuber then they should put as much effort into their videos as you, I think. Sometimes you say how you make a low effort video really quickly and how it pays off much more, but I say f that, I and many more stick with your content BECAUSE of the hard work and time that goes into your vids and it is definitely noticeable.

I think the marauder is great IF he's accompanied by a bunch of other demons. Doom Eternal is most fun when it pushes you to your limit, and the Marauder can't do that alone. In fact, he pretty much slows the game to a crawl when he's by himself. IMO, his representation in the DLC is much better than the base game.

This game's design choices and new mechanics are definitely jarring at first, but I agree, it's hard to imagine it without them. What I love about it is its uniqueness allows it to stand on its own apart from DOOM 2016. So instead of having two games that follow the same beats, we have two that sort of have their own unique feel and identity. I went back to 2016 just the other day after having not played in a while, and it's still a blast as well.

I'd say the story is not imtrusive at all, you can skip all story-related cutscenes. Taras Nabad got harder mainly due to the sudden arrival of the Archvile

Hello, great review and I'm surprised to say that a lot of my thoughts on the game exactly matched yours! Particularly with the Home Fortress and Taras Nabad. Although, what I found most difficult with Taras Nabad was the unannounced Archvile. That beast made the arena fight much harder than the previous ones. I also thought the Marauder was going to be very tough and while the first fight resulted in a loss, he became very easy the second time and wasn't that bad to fight against afterwards. Except in the Super Gore Nest Master Level, that is literal "Hell on Earth."

@@chaaseisstupid2036 hm. doom 2016 was a return to the "Halo" games of the past. A decent story, great levels and atmosphere, fun guns to shoot, traditional multiplayer, etc. DE really is the boomer shooter of 2020 -- it goes all in on the game mechanics, while everything else is secondary. It's like Prodeus and Dusk but with a few cinematics and high-fidelity visuals.

@@chaaseisstupid2036 not really. boomer shooters are supposed to translate some feelings, game mechanics or visual style of shooter games that were released back in the 90s. The first Halo game was released in 2001. Doom Eternal somehow makes both the enemies and you feel powerful. The enemies can take considerable amount of bullets and kill you very fast, but on the other hand, your arsenal also has tons of powerful abilities which if you can utilize to its fullest is very effective. I've always hated rubberband mechanics, but the way Doom Eternal heavily relies on "life steal" in order to keep you alive feels great and right. It's like you devour the demons to get power to sow more destruction. Aggression is not only rewarded, but required. The chaos, panic, adrenaline and aggression is something no game has done this well. It's a piece of art.

If that's true, maybe you can try working on it for at least 5 minutes a day to keep the dev streak alive. I've been doing that with a recent game project of mine, and it's helped me a lot. The most difficult part of a project is starting on it again after having gotten it out of your head for a week or longer.

Yes absolutely. The best thing to do is keep the game fresh in your mind, and keep it relevant to yourself - even if you don't do much on each particular day, losing momentum is a killer. There haven't been any updates lately, and typically that means there's nothing *to* update us on.

I preferred to *fly* around the arena shooting everything down with double shotty and use the machine gun with the sniper scope to well, snipe stuff. The marauder is a complete 180 from my playstyle, it was and is so bad that each time I had to face a marauder I already knew the fun was ending and it was time for the CBT of "5 minute marauder fight", the worst part is that he was made immune to the BFG which could've been used to at least do a ton of damage to him, not just straight up 0, as it stands I only used the BFG on the final boss, never seemed useful in any other arena because the ammo is so scarce etc, you get the point.
