This isn’t in louisiana the ones in louisiana are of a different species this is is either a Cherax ( yabby) or eustacus there are nine groups of cray fish in Australia which include over a 100 species

From the states here. Our Craws are not nearly as big. They average at about 3 to 4 inches long with the bigger ones being around 6.

I've actually never measured the overall length of one, we have to measure the mid portion of them to get the size limits.

Ok, I’m a fisherman and love eating them as well but aren’t those big crayfish endangered? I know the large fresh water crayfish in Tasmania are and I believe that same crayfish also have a habitat in Australia. Not saying you’re wrong or anything but those large crayfish take like 50 yrs to get that big… it’s like catching a trophy bass and eating it. Those bigger animals are great for the ecosystem and should be left alone. Eat the smaller ones and leave the big ones alone imo. They are beautiful animals for sure.

Great comment mate. There are very strict regulations on these crayfish! And any bigger than this is illegal to keep, for breeding reasons. Hence why I would never keep a bigger Cray than this and have always let them go. This was the very upper limit on regulation

Good question, I just looked it up. I believe they are the same animal. It just depends on where you live in the world. We don't call them crawfish in Australia. Where are you from?

Oh gotcha. So super limited season from what I am seeing but still having really decreased populations. Personally, I’d leave them alone over eating them. But won’t judge you if you are catching and eating them according to the guidelines.
