During the whole lesson, the teacher maintained a high level of control and gave clear instructions (these are the only positive things I have noticed). It is amazing to see how this teacher can annihilate the advantages of active and interactive teaching methods. Indeed, active and interactive teaching methods are student-centred, but she succeeded in keeping a teacher-centred approach, limiting the depth of student interaction or creative expression. Even though the students were engaged in physical activities like the relay race, they interacted very little with each other and demonstrated very little pleasure during the lesson. They were passive and not engaged since the teacher tried to control them too much! Mimicking is supposed to amuse young learners, but they mostly look bored! This video is a perfect example of failing using active and interactive learning approach by stifling our students’ expression! The activities are time-consuming to prepare and are really relevant, but the approach definitely isn't! Furthermore, I hadn't seen her smile during the 28 minutes of the video!

I agree and disagree. She may not seem like she’s doing a lot, but unfortunately schools in the US, or really anywhere don’t have teachers that actually engage with their students like this. Hopefully they have more time in other lessons to interact and play a bit more with their learning, but at least she is teaching. And she’s doing pretty good! It can be hard to handle a classroom of littles because you can’t just yell at them. She has them moving, which heightens serotonin and dopamine levels. She also has them discussing with multiple different classmates. I noticed several kids wanted to be the assistant before she could even finish her sentence! That’s pretty awesome!

Your class is so engaged! Really great lesson!!!

The children are learning and engaged because they have been trained by her and they have security knowing that the teacher is managing the class and there is no young child managing the teacher and the class. She’s prepared and she changes the activity before they get bored. That’s not easy.

Someone please describe how the relay works? I could not understand what they were doing from the video. Also, do you think this relay is something that they have done many times that’s why they knew what to do? Or, is this something the children could manage first time they do it?

This stuff is way too easy for second graders. No wonder we're way behind education wise to even undeveloped countries
