For the most part I detest plastic parts. There are some notable exceptions of course but many of these plastic parts were an effort on the part of the manufacturers are lt to make the reel cheaper to build and therefore more profitable. This is very true on spinning reels at least in my experience. I cleaned up that huge drag washer on that trolling reel by carefully using a small wire brush. You make working on these bait casters look so easy. I honestly have never worked on one of this type. Very good job Dennis.- Chris

That must be a later model EX 501 for a lefty the 98 model EX 500 has a rocker style flipping switch above the thumb bar disengage in a different location and 3 thumb screws instead of Phillips screws and a flip up hood for accessing the line through the levelwind but most of the freshwater reels have parts including ABUs wih yokes and levelwind drive components the Shimano Tranx 300/400 is well built and the Penn Fathom 2 15 Casting Special has a excellent over a minute free spool and totally internal design when I serviced it with the Penn Squall 15 that metal yokes

I received a used Quantum EX 501CX as a gift from my brother, who used it for saltwater fishing. The magnets are completely worn out. I contacted Quantum and they can’t supply replacements as they don’t make reels that use them anymore. Can you suggest where I can get replacements, dimensions, etc.? Thanks for the help.

There are smoking papers from a brand called Gizeh. They use magnets in their packaging which are exactly the same as used in the quantum reel! Just look for Gizeh Black Magnet. Have fun!

They share some, but not all parts. Size wise it is the same but the frame, for example is. opposite or mirror image between the two versions.
