Dennis, I have a small hand torch but I rarely use it. You did a super job freeing that pinion. I look forward to when you bring this reel all the way back to life! I sent you the photos of my finished Mitchell (Browning) 488 Sport saltwater spinning reel. I had a difficult bail and rotor repair on this reel. There’s nothing like the feeling of what it is like to bring a beautiful and rare vintage reel back to life! This 488 is an unusual and extraordinary reel that is living again! - Chris

Dennis, I love the videos. I’ve worked on cars and boats all my life. I’ve learned those little tricks the hard way. I’ve also used a soldering gun to heat parts. The way you jump in. I’ve found that they all kinda work the same. The fasteners are different and they have to worry about copyright © or patten infringement but it’s like Shimano came out with “bait runner” in the early 90’s and then Penn released it right after. Since Penn is the owner of Shakespeare then Shakespeare released it (I don’t know if they did) but it’s like defense technology we don’t have anything that China and Russia don’t know about.

Good Point. Berkley is also part of Pure fishing and the Berkley Fusion reel is an almost exact copy of the Penn Battle for about $40 less. It also has an additional ball bearing. Go figure. Pflueger President anyone? Same company, same design - Dennis

If you look at the yoke on this reel an some other Tritons; you'll notice that the yoke is beveled accept the jack better. In otherwords there's a top side and a bottom side, bevled goes down towards jack so the feer spool engages easier. Maybe you'll want to point this out when you get your bearings and finish up the video. Great job or this anx all your videos. As ever

Cool 😎 Do you have any videos on the Shimano Castaic 201f by any chance? And if not do you have one of those reels where you maybe could make a video on it? I just got one haha and I’m nervous to start pulling it all apart, the schematic is way more complicated than I’m used to 😂

Hi, how did you get that bearing off the spool that was making the noise. I want to replace that same bearing but I have been unable to get it off. Short of using a dremel to cut it off, I am at a loss. It looks like you couldn't pull it off by hand at the end of this video, so I am wondering if it take a special tool or technique.

The spool bearing sits in the inner gear side case. If you is stuck on the spool, that should not be. I would spray it with a penetrating oil and use a plumbers torch to heat it. The heat will expand the inner race and you should be able to grab the bearing with a pliers and rock it off after the heat treatment. Since it needs to be replaced, you could use the dreamed if you like as an alternative - Dennis

Dennis, My free spool speed control stopped working after I disassembled the reel (with the pinion gear stuck on the spool shaft) which is now free! I rotated the control knob spacer and the problem came back. Please advise, shop says I need a new spacer.

You may need the spacer. It is hard for me to say without seeing it. The adjuster should be set to the free spool and the valleys nested to the studs. It is possible that something was damaged while trying to fish the reel with the stick pinion gear.

I have the same model in 15/30 with the custom built for shimano on the side plate, always wondered about that. Bought it for 15 bucks used.

I was told that these were made for the Shimano sales team to use as samples and demos. Not sure if that is correct - Dennis
