Mitchell 301 vintage fishing reel how to service

I bought my Mitchell 301 in the early 80’s. It got a lot of use for a couple of years back then but became a shed ornament while I maneuvered through life. I retired last year and now returning to my old hobby. Thank you for the video! I must have watched it 10 times but my 301 is now like new. Mine still had a sticker on the spool recommending Royal Bonnyl II fishing line.

Out of 72 Mitchells that I own, only one is a 300. I do have a 401 which is the high speed version of the 301 for a lefty. These over-engineered reels are amazing in their durability and longevity. The only part I’ve ever had to replace in these reels is the AR dog because those tiny teeth will wear out particularly the plastic ones. Great video on this almost legendary spinning reel! - Chris

Yes - that is the most common fail in these reels. The A/R dogs have several different configurations and the plastic ones are most prone to failure - Be well!

The 301 is my favourite freshwater reel, there's almost nothing in uk fresh waters it can't cope with, and it's beautifully engineered as well.

HELLO DENNIS Ed from East Hartford, Ct. I love the 300 left-hand model. I don't know One Company that has ever made Reel more Dependent. I have been using. One for some 55 years, never had any trouble.

My uncle's and cousins used to all have the Mitchell 308's being a lefty I stuck with pflueger reels when I was young- then we all switched,when Shimano came out with all their black reel series. 👍 Great Tutorial Dennis.

That was what they had back in the day. Unfortunately, any grease left inside a reel for too long with do the same. - Dennis

Dennis, Have you heard of ABUMATIC 120 spin cast reels they wear made in Sweden. They also had a 170 spin cast and a spin matic spinning reel. I have many of these reels that go back to the early 60; s let me tell you, Sir, that till this day, I have never seen one come close to the reliably of these reels. Ed. Dennis, I enjoy your videos.

I just got a 301 on Ebay. Hoping it's in good shape, sure looks like it is. I will be servicing it and will have your video playing as I do, and will take photos of the gear layout. What grease do you use? Where is the best place to get replacement parts (A/R dog, springs, gears, etc)? Thank you. Rangers... Lead the Way!

I use Penn Precision reek grease and oil. A combination pack is available through Mysticparts.com. Here is a link to it www.mysticparts.com/LubesCleaners/Penn/ANGPCK.aspx The 301 will be harder to find parts for than the 300 because of the gears, bail, trip, etc are micro images of the 300s. Some parts are interchangeable. A good source is eBay. Check with me first if you need something as I have some 300 parts that may fit your needs - Dennis

Hello Sir. I received the Penn oil and grease today. Fist 301 no issues. My second reel, a 301C appears to have the wrong main gear installed. The real spins the wrong way when putting back on. Do you know if you have a main drive for a 301c? Thanks. @@2ndChanceTackle

Dennis, Thanks for another great reference video on a well made reel. Could you recommend a paint type and/or colour to match the original finish ? Mine is kind of beat up

Bring your reel to an auto parts store that sells touch up paint and try to match the shades of black to your reel. I don't generally don't repaint reels and haven't done it in a while. Make sure that you strip off the bad paint and use primer before the finish coat to get the most out of the new paint. Dennis
