Dennis, after I use any of my vintage reels in saltwater I rinse them but when I get them home they come apart and are thoroughly cleanings and lubricated. I don’t take any chances. I have four quite large rear drag reels that I often use for surf fishing and it I did not do this same thing with them by the next year they would be in rough shape particularly the drags. The spool on this Penn would concern me after seeing this. Of course you know why I’m not fond of this reel. Other than that concern, the reel itself is solid and should be reliable. I like the metal case. Good video! - Chris

Is there any reason NOT to swap out the shielded bearing to sealed bearings? The cost of four/five sealed bearings (shaft, 2 case bearings, and 1 or 2 line roller bearings is only about $4. I have done this to most of my reels and all the saltwater reels i sell. Thank you.

No reason to do the swap, unless you need bearings in the reel. If/when you need them, a sealed bearing will prevent a lot of issues that the shielded ones have - Thanks for asking -Dennis

Though I typically fish with vintage Penn, I do own a Fierce 4 6000 and 3000, and so far, they seem like decent reels. I was thinking that the drag knob has a seal to keep salt water and sand out of the drag?

It does seal, but it is minimal

Have you ever considered using a ultrasonic cleaner for your parts?
@2ndChanceTackle7 ай бұрын
Yes - I do have an ultrasonic cleaner and I use it for tough parts cleaning. I do not use it for routine maintenance - Thanks for the note - Dennis

Look like a pretty nice Reel typical Penn quality but if saltwater is getting under the spool probably critical the Reel is rinsed and cleaned after every use.

Yes - the rinsing is key - Thanks Bobby

Wow 😮 , I'll Keep To The Older or Cheaper Reels ! Way To Much Money To Have Any Problems With Those Reels ! That Metal Was Not Thought About Ahead Of Time. Or You're Supposed To Buy A New One 😔 .

Agree - poor material design engineering on that one
