The silver series (workhorse) era reels. Thanks Dennis. 👍

Yes they were. Hard to find a bad one among the many that were made across the Japanese manufacturers. The only knock against them is that the paint did not hold up in saltwater environs

I like the silver reels , I guess because I was a young adult starting to buy spinning reels and getting away from so many push button reels, and the silver ones were the latest and greatest of the entry/ middle range of reels of the time and Penn's were something to drool over in the tackle shop

Well said. And the Penn Silver reels - 101-105 just didn't measure up to the Daiwa, Ryobis, etc of the period

Dennis, I have two Olympic Spark VO reels - a 2000 and an 1800. They are both solid reels though I think they have a ball bearing at the pinion unlike this reel you’re servicing. I try to avoid reels with these U clips hiding the rotor / pinion. I just don’t like them for saltwater fishing. I think they are fine ones for pond or small lake fishing I just don’t fish that way very often. Thanks Dennis! - Chris

I don't like the "U" design either. It didn't last. You can't find a modern reel with that design.

@@2ndChanceTackle This is why the only Daiwa Silver I don’t like is the 1500C because it uses a U-clip just like this. It’s the only silver Daiwa with no ball bearing. I have one but only because I was collecting the complete set of these silver series Daiwa reels. Othejwise I’d never have one. You know those Daiwa J series reels are this way as Wei. It was a terrible idea except for entry level freshwater fishing. By the way, I seriously dislike the Ryobi Silver Cloud reels except for the SX5. The others have plastic spools which is awful! The powerful series are the ones to get! - Chris

When I was young we had no silver reels We had stone reels and we were glad to have them. We went fishing for megalodon and coelacanths but we had to watch out for meat eating dinosaurs and pterosaurs. No silver reels. They came later after the copper reels.
